HCV transmission model with protection awareness in an SEACTR community.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a bloodborne virus that causes both acute and chronic hepatitis with the severity from a mild illness to liver cirrhosis and cancer. As one of the major infectious diseases in China, the monthly surveillance data from the Fujian Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows the increasing tendency from 2004 to 2011, the stable tendency from 2012 to 2016, and the declining tendency from 2017 to 2022. The 2004-2022 HCV infection tendency of Fujian Province is affected by nation-wide main control measures of Chinese government, because no contro

Mathematical analysis of the transmission dynamics of the liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini.

We develop and analyse two population-based models of the transmission dynamics of the worm parasite Opisthorchis viverrini. The life cycle of O. viverrini includes humans, cats and dogs as definitive hosts; and snails and fish as intermediate hosts. The first model has only one definitive host (humans) while the second model has two additional hosts: the reservoir hosts, cats and dogs. We define reproduction numbers and endemic equilibrium points for the two models. We use prevalence data for the five hosts from two islands in Lao People's Democratic Republic to estimate distributions of para

A cholera model in a patchy environment with water and human movement.

A mathematical model for cholera is formulated that incorporates direct and indirect transmission, patch structure, and both water and human movement. The basic reproduction number R0 is defined and shown to give a sharp threshold that determines whether or not the disease dies out. Kirchhoff's Matrix Tree Theorem from graph theory is used to investigate the dependence of R0 on the connectivity and movement of water, and to prove the global stability of the endemic equilibrium when R0>1. The type/target reproduction numbers are derived to measure the control strategies that are required to era

Effect of Preventive Measures and Heterogeneity of Sexual Contacts on Zika virus Transmission.

The global spread of the Zika virus (ZIKV), compounded by the absence of effective antiviral drugs or widely available vaccines, highlights the importance of understanding its transmission dynamics to implement effective public health strategies. The transmission of the Zika virus is attributable to the heterogeneity of sexual contacts and the lack of miracle drugs or vaccines. We develop a degree-based mathematical network model which takes account of heterogeneity of sexual contacts and the adoption of preventive measures. We derive analytical expressions for the basic reproduction number fo

Quantifying the risk of vector-borne disease transmission attributable to genetically modified vectors.

The relative risk of disease transmission caused by the potential release of transgenic vectors, such as through sterile insect technique or gene drive systems, is assessed with comparison with wild-type vectors. The probabilistic risk framework is demonstrated with an assessment of the relative risk of lymphatic filariasis, malaria and o'nyong'nyong arbovirus transmission by mosquito vectors to human hosts given a released transgenic strain of Anopheles coluzzii carrying a dominant sterile male gene construct. Harm is quantified by a logarithmic loss function that depends on the causal risk r

Body-size scaling in an SEI model of wildlife diseases.

A number of wildlife pathogens are generalist and can affect different host species characterized by a wide range of body sizes. In this work we analyze the role of allometric scaling of host vital and epidemiological rates in a Susceptible-Exposed-Infected (SEI) model. Our analysis shows that the transmission coefficient threshold for the disease to establish in the population scales allometrically (exponent = 0.45) with host size as well as the threshold at which limit cycles occur. In contrast, the threshold of the basic reproduction number for sustained oscillations to occur is independent

Modelling triatomine bug population and Trypanosoma rangeli transmission dynamics: Co-feeding, pathogenic effect and linkage with chagas disease.

Trypanosoma rangeli (T. rangeli), a parasite, is not pathogenic to human but pathogenic to some vector species to induce the behavior changes of infected vectors and subsequently impact the transmission dynamics of other diseases such as Chagas disease which shares the same vector species. Here we develop a mathematical model and conduct qualitative analysis for the transmission dynamics of T. rangeli. We incorporate both systemic and co-feeding transmission routes, and account for the pathogenic effect using infection-induced fecundity and fertility change of the triatomine bugs. We derive tw

A mathematical model for the seasonal transmission of schistosomiasis in the lake and marshland regions of China.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease caused by \textit{ Schistosoma Japonicum}, is still one of the most serious parasitic diseases in China and remains endemic in seven provinces, including Hubei, Anhui, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan. The monthly data of human schistosomiasis cases in Hubei, Hunan, and Anhui provinces (lake and marshland regions) released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) display a periodic pattern with more cases in late summer and early autumn. Based on this observation, we construct a deterministic model with periodic trans

Spatial spreading model and dynamics of West Nile virus in birds and mosquitoes with free boundary.

In this paper, a reaction-diffusion system is proposed to model the spatial spreading of West Nile virus in vector mosquitoes and host birds in North America. Transmission dynamics are based on a simplified model involving mosquitoes and birds, and the free boundary is introduced to model and explore the expanding front of the infected region. The spatial-temporal risk index [Formula: see text], which involves regional characteristic and time, is defined for the simplified reaction-diffusion model with the free boundary to compare with other related threshold values, including the usual basic

Mathematical analysis of a stochastic delay model for respiratory syncytial virus dynamics.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a single-stranded RNA virus responsible for a wide range of respiratory tract infections, including those affecting the lungs, airways, and middle ear. Understanding its transmission dynamics remains essential for effective disease control. A bio-inspired stochastic delay model for RSV transmission is proposed and analyzed. The model's qualitative properties including positivity, boundedness, equilibrium states, and the basic reproduction number are rigorously established through well-posedness theorems. Parameter sensitivity is also examined. To investigat

Modeling parasite clearance and transmission delays in American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis transmission dynamics.

American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) is a multi-host vector-borne disease with complex transmission dynamics involving sand fly vectors, reservoirs, and incidental hosts. In this study, we develop and analyze two delay differential equation (DDE) models to explore the role of biological time delays in ACL transmission dynamics. The first model incorporates a delay in the parasite clearance term of the incidental host, reflecting the minimum parasite clearance time between infection and recovery. The second model introduces a delay that represents delays in skin lesion development following e

Dengue virus introduction and 2025 outlook: scenario-based evaluation of vaccination impact using mathematical modeling.

This study aims to model multiple scenarios of dengue introduction and spread in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil, and to evaluate the impact of vaccination strategies on the epidemic trajectory in a city that, until 2023, had less than 1% of its population infected with dengue. First, we estimated the basic reproduction number (R 0 ) during the 2024 epidemic and compared it with values reported in the literature. We then developed an age-stratified mathematical model, calibrated to 2024 dengue case data using a genetic algorithm, to simulate transmission dynamics with and without vaccination

Contact Patterns Drive Age-Structured Transmission Dynamics and Seasonality of Scarlet Fever.

BACKGROUND: Scarlet fever has seen a sharp increase in its reported incidence in China since 2011, and this study focuses on Shanghai as a representative setting to systematically investigate its transmission dynamics by analyzing age structure. It further identifies high-risk age groups and provides a theoretical foundation for prevention and non-pharmaceutical intervention strategies. METHODS: We developed an SIR model that incorporates age structure and seasonality of transmission rate. In parameter estimation, the methodology of the partially observed Markov process framework is employed

Modeling the population dynamics of HIV/AIDS with opportunistic infections at the severe stage of HIV.

In this paper, we present a deterministic model for the population dynamics of HIV/AIDS, wherein some individuals at the severe symptomatic phase of HIV develop serious opportunistic infections (OIs) such cryptococcal, tuberculous, pneumococcal, and other bacterial meningitis due to an inappropriate treatment or lack of counseling. OIs are responsible for significant mortality and disability on individuals with HIV in many countries. Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is among frequent OIs responsible for significant mortality and disability of individuals with HIV in limited resource settings. Howe

EpiFusion: Joint inference of the effective reproduction number by integrating phylodynamic and epidemiological modelling with particle filtering.

Accurately estimating the effective reproduction number (Rt) of a circulating pathogen is a fundamental challenge in the study of infectious disease. The fields of epidemiology and pathogen phylodynamics both share this goal, but to date, methodologies and data employed by each remain largely distinct. Here we present EpiFusion: a joint approach that can be used to harness the complementary strengths of each field to improve estimation of outbreak dynamics for large and poorly sampled epidemics, such as arboviral or respiratory virus outbreaks, and validate it for retrospective analysis. We pr

A non-parametric method for determining epidemiological reproduction numbers.

In the spreading of infectious diseases, an important number to determine is how many other people will be infected on average by anyone who has become infected themselves. This is known as the reproduction number. This paper describes a non-parametric inverse method for extracting the full transfer function of infection, of which the reproduction number is the integral. The method is demonstrated by applying it to the timeline of hospitalisation admissions for covid-19 in the Netherlands up to May 20 2020, which is publicly available from the site of the Dutch National Institute of Public Hea

Onchocerciasis dynamics: modelling the effects of treatment, education and vector control.

A deterministic model of onchocerciasis disease dynamics is considered in a community partitioned into compartments based on the disease status. Public health education is offered in the community during the implementation of mass treatment using ivermectin drugs. Also, larviciding and trapping strategies are implemented in the vector population with the aim of controlling population growth of black flies. We fit the model to the data to check the suitability of the model. Expressions are derived for the influence on the reproduction numbers of these strategies. Numerical results show that the

Calculation of final size for vector-transmitted epidemic model.

Calculation of final size of an epidemic model offers a useful estimation for the impact of an epidemic. Despite its usefulness, the majority of practical applications focuses on the classical Kermack McKendrick model for final size calculation. Estimation of final size for different types of epidemics such as vector-transmitted infection is a forthcoming target. In this paper, we derive an explicit form of a final size equation for a vector-transmitted epidemic model. Numerical calculation of a final size equation revealed the existence of a threshold curve which separates a region into two d

Age-structured viral dynamics in a host with multiple compartments.

Several studies have reported dual pathways for HIV cell infection, namely the binding of free virions to target cell receptors (cell-free), and direct transmission from infected cells to uninfected cells through virological synapse (cell-to-cell). Furthermore, understanding spread of the infection may require a relatively in-depth comprehension of how the connection between organs, each with characteristic cell composition and infection kinetics, affects viral dynamics. We propose a virus model consisting of multiple compartments with cell populations subject to distinct infectivity kernels a

The role of asymptomatics and dogs on leishmaniasis propagation.

Leishmaniasis is a parasite disease transmitted by the bites of sandflies. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common form of the disease and it is endemic in the Americas. Around 70 animal species, including humans, have been found as natural reservoir hosts of leishmania parasites. Among the reservoirs, dogs are the most important ones due to their proximity to the human habitat. Infection by leishmaniasis does not invariably cause illness in the host, and it also can remain asymptomatic for a long period, specially in dogs. In this work we formulate a model to study the transmission of the
