Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in North Africa: four decades of progress and regional trends (1984-2024).

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a therapy used to treat various malignant and non-malignant conditions and is one of the most resource-demanding medical procedures. In North Africa, the lack of cancer registries has limited insight into the regional progress of HSCT. This study provides an updated overview of the current HSCT landscape in North Africa, tracing its historical evolution and highlighting existing challenges. METHODS: An electronic search was performed in scientific databases (PubMed, ResearchGate, Web of Science and Google Scholar), results of the me

Impact of Metformin Therapy on Vitamin B12 Levels in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious health condition affecting people worldwide with a high prevalence rate. DM is classified according to its aetiology into type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); several risk factors contribute to the development of T2DM, such as age, genetic predisposition and obesity. Metformin is a proven drug of choice, and it is used as a first-line treatment for patients with T2DM to improve their glycaemic levels. Vitamin B12 is an important water-soluble vitamin, and its deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia. MATERIA

Immunogenicity and safety studies of an inactivated vaccine against Rift Valley fever.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging transboundary, mosquito-borne, zoonotic viral disease caused by a single serotype of a virus belonging to the Phenuiviridae family (genus Phlebovirus). It is considered an important threat to both agriculture and public health in endemic areas, because the virus, transmitted by different mosquito genera, leads to abortions in susceptible animal hosts especially sheep, goat, cattle, and buffaloes, resulting in severe economic losses. Humans can also acquire the infection, and the major sources are represented by the direct contact with infected animal bloo

Molecular Characterization of Newly Emerging Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Serotype SAT 2 of Lib-12 Lineage Isolated from Egypt.

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) serotype SAT 2 occurred in Egypt in 2018, which affected cattle and water buffalo. Previous phylogenetic studies on FMDV circulating in Egypt have mainly focused on genomic regions encoding structural proteins which determine FMDV serotype. So far, none of these studies have analyzed the open reading frame (ORF) sequence of Egyptian SAT 2/Lib-12 lineage. The present study aimed to analyze and identify the ORF genome sequence of Lib-12 lineage which belongs to FMDV serotype SAT 2 topotype VII in Egypt. The protocol workflow was optimized and te

Homozygous dystroglycan mutation associated with a novel muscle-eye-brain disease-like phenotype with multicystic leucodystrophy.

Defects in dystroglycan post-translational modification result in congenital muscular dystrophy with or without additional eye and brain involvement, are referred to as secondary dystroglycanopathies and have been associated with mutations in 11 different genes encoding glycosyltransferases or associated proteins. However, only one patient with a mutation in the dystroglycan encoding gene DAG1 itself has been described before. We here report a homozygous novel DAG1 missense mutation c.2006G>T predicted to result in the amino acid substitution p.Cys669Phe in the β-subunit of dystroglycan in two

The imaging appearance of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease caused by the E200K mutation.

The E200K mutation on chromosome 20 can cause familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Patients with this mutation are clinically similar to those with sporadic CJD, but their imaging features are not well documented. We report here the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging characteristics of this unique group of patients using three-dimensional spoiled gradient recalled (SPGR) echo images, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurements, MR spectroscopy and a fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequence.
