Return to preinjury pivoting sports after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is different between males and females, as are the patient-reported reasons.

PURPOSE: To investigate return to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), differences based on sex and concomitant meniscal repair, and identify reasons why patients do not RTS. METHODS: Overall, 232 patients undergoing ACLR, with or without concomitant meniscal repair, that were actively participating in pivoting sports at the time of injury, were prospectively recruited. At 2 years, return to preinjury pivoting sport was investigated and, if they had returned, whether they felt their performance was at (or better) or below preinjury status. Specific reasons for n

Soft Tissue Injury and Immobilization Are Both Required for Persistent Elbow Contracture in a Rat Model.

Post-traumatic joint contracture commonly occurs after elbow injury. Although known as a risk factor for poor outcomes, immobilization is necessary to prevent reinjury. The objective of this study was to isolate the contribution of immobilization to mechanical and functional disability using an animal model. Left elbows of Long-Evans rats were immobilized in the absence (IM) or presence of an elbow injury (INJ+IM). Animals were immobilized for 21 or 42 days or immobilized for 21 days followed by free mobilization (FM) for 21 days. Uninjured animals without immobilization (CTRL) were also evalu

The 2020 NBA Orthobiologics Consensus Statement.

This 2020 NBA Orthobiologics Consensus Statement provides a concise summary of available literature and practical clinical guidelines for team physicians and players. We recognize that orthobiologic injections are a generally safe treatment modality with a significant potential to reduce pain and expedite early return to play in specific musculoskeletal injuries. The use of orthobiologics in sports medicine to safely reduce time loss and reinjury is of considerable interest, especially as it relates to the potential effect on a professional athlete. While these novel substances have potential

Biomechanical Effects of Blood Flow Restriction Training after ACL Reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery, returning the knee to previous levels of strength and function is challenging, with the failure to do so associated with an increased risk of reinjury and long-term degenerative problems. Blood flow restriction (BFR) is gaining popularity as a rehabilitation technique; however, its effects on the mechanics of these exercises have not been fully explored. In this study, we aimed to determine the acute effects of BFR on the performance of a step-up exercise protocol and to assess the acceptability of the technique. METHODS:

Military personnel with self-reported ankle injuries do not demonstrate deficits in dynamic postural stability or landing kinematics.

BACKGROUND: The odds of sustaining non-contact musculoskeletal injuries are higher in Special Operations Forces operators than in infantry soldiers. The ankle is one of the most commonly injured joints, and once injured can put individuals at risk for reinjury. The purpose of this study was to determine if any differences in postural stability and landing kinematics exist between operators with a self-reported ankle injury in the past one year and uninjured controls. METHODS: A total of 55 Special Operations Forces operators were included in this analysis. Comparisons were made between operat

Functional and psychological impact of nasal bone fractures sustained during sports activities: A survey of 87 patients.

Nasal bone fractures that require reduction are a common sequela of sports injuries. We conducted a survey to ascertain the outcomes of patients who had experienced a nasal bone fracture and who subsequently underwent manipulation under anesthesia. We reviewed data on 217 nasal bone fractures that had been seen at our institution over a 3-year period. Of these, 133 (61.3%) had occurred as a result of a sports activity. Thirty of the 133 patients (22.6%) had been managed conservatively, while the other 103 (77.4%) had undergone manipulation under anesthesia. We were able to contact 87 of the 10

[Importance of ultrasound in postoperative follow-up after reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament].

Eighty-eight male patients following reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL; mean 24 months since operation) had a thorough clinical examination including instrumented measurement of laxity using the KT 1000. These results were correlated with an ultrasound (US) grading that evaluates the reconstruction itself as well as its functional behaviour during the anterior drawer test. Thirty-four magnetic resonance (MR) studies of 33 patients were available. Undoubtedly postoperative visualization of the reconstructed ACL is superior to that of both normal control ACL and acute trauma

Application of modalities in overuse syndromes.

Improper techniques are often the cause of overuse syndromes. Unless the technique is corrected, the patient is doomed to recurrence. The same is true of improper posture, especially in the lower extremity and trunk areas. The pitcher or tennis player should have his or her style analyzed for proper form. The runner should have his or her muscular imbalances corrected by exercise and orthotic appliances. As with all other modalities used for treating painful conditions, proper evaluation of the etiology and the rectification of the cause is important. When athletes are underway in their sports

Beyond self-reports after anterior cruciate ligament injury - machine learning methods for classifying and identifying movement patterns related to fear of re-injury.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are prevalent career-ending sports injuries. A barrier to successful return to activity is fear of re-injury. Evaluating psychological readiness is however limited to insufficient self-reported assessments. We developed machine learning models using biomechanical data from standardized rebound side hops (SRSH) to objectively classify fear levels post-ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and identify key biomechanical variables. Sixty individuals with ACLR and 47 controls performed up to 10 side hops per leg. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using motion cap
