Decision-Making in Nursing Students With Different Experience Levels Under Varying Task Complexities: A Pilot Eye-Tracking Study.

BACKGROUND: Effective decision-making is essential in nursing but often underdeveloped in students and novice nurses. Eye-tracking offers a real-time, objective way to study decision processes. METHODS: A pilot observational study was conducted, dividing nursing students into high- and low-experience groups based on internship exposure. Participants performed intravenous infusion preparation tasks of varying complexity. Eye-tracking and visualization techniques were used to analyze gaze patterns and decision-making trajectories. RESULTS: Under low-complexity conditions, both groups showed fe

Attentional constraints on target selection for smooth pursuit eye movements.

Saccadic eye movements are strongly influenced by shifts of attention to non-target objects. In contrast, we have shown previously that the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements is relatively unaffected when attention is shifted to objects that are either stationary or move in the same direction as the pursuit target (Souto & Kerzel, 2008). Here, we asked how attention interacts with target selection when a choice has to be made between objects moving in opposite directions. In a dual-task paradigm, observers had to pursue a designated object while making a perceptual judgment on an objec

Hemodynamic Outcomes of Anesthesia Management Assisted by Nurses Trained in Specific Medical Acts in Gastrointestinal Surgery: A Retrospective Propensity Score-Matched Pilot Study.

Introduction Task-shifting in anesthesia care is increasingly recognized as a vital approach to managing anesthesiologist shortages. In Japan, a national certification system for Nurses Trained in Specific Medical Acts (NTSMAs) was introduced to support perioperative management. This pilot study aimed to compare intraoperative hemodynamic outcomes between NTSMA-assisted anesthesia management and physician-only management in gastrointestinal surgery using a propensity score-matched design. Materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent elective gastrointestinal surgery

Healthcare workers' perspectives on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa: implications for injectable formulation rollout-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), particularly cabotegravir, presents a promising HIV prevention option in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where HIV prevalence remains high. As frontline providers, healthcare workers (HCWs) are central to PrEP delivery. Given the emerging introduction of injectable PrEP in SSA, this review examines HCW perspectives on PrEP delivery broadly, including both oral and injectable formulations, with particular attention to how oral PrEP implementation experiences inform injectable PrEP readiness. "Phase capture" in the perception of interpolated shape: cue combination and the influence function.

This study was concerned with what stimulus information observers use to judge the shape of simple objects. We used a string of four Gabor patches to define a contour. A fifth, center patch served as a test pattern. The observers' task was to judge the location of the test pattern relative to the contour. The contour was either a straight line, or an arc with positive or negative curvature (the radius of curvature was either 2 or 6 deg). We asked whether phase shifts in the inner or outer pairs of patches distributed along the contour influence the perceived shape. That is, we measured the pha

High performance of point-of-care rapid tests for advanced HIV disease diagnosis by lay providers in Malawi: Results from a prospective diagnostic accuracy study supporting decentralized advanced HIV disease screening.

CD4 testing is essential for identifying people with advanced HIV(AHD) disease and enabling delivery of the recommended diagnostic package including serum cryptococcal antigen (CrAG)and urine lipoarabinomannan(LAM) testing and prophylaxis. Suboptimal access to CD4 testing remains a major barrier to the scale-up of advanced HIV disease services, and there is limited evidence to inform strategies for improving access within constrained health systems. Although task-sharing for advanced HIV disease is being promoted, evidence on the performance of these diagnostics when delivered by lay providers

Brief report: CANTAB performance and brain structure in pediatric patients with Asperger syndrome.

By merging neuropsychological (CANTAB/cambridge neuropsychological test automated battery) and structural brain imaging data (voxel-based-morphometry) the present study sought to identify the neurocognitive correlates of executive functions in individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) compared to healthy controls. Results disclosed subtle group differences regarding response speed on only one CANTAB subtest that is thought to tap fronto-executive network functions (SWM/spatial working memory). Across all participants, SWM performance was significantly associated with two brain regions (precentra

Exploring neuropsychological and socio-emotional task performance in anorexia nervosa: A cluster analytic approach.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterise heterogeneity in neuropsychological and socio-emotional task performance in young women with anorexia nervosa (AN) using hierarchical cluster analysis. Further, we aimed to test whether cognitive profiles were associated with differences in clinical variables (body mass index, illness duration and age at diagnosis), psychopathology (eating disorder, autistic symptoms, anxiety and depression) and functional impairment. METHOD: Set-shifting, central coherence and theory of mind abilities were measured in 118 women with acute or remitted AN. A

Odor identification accuracy declines following 24 h of sleep deprivation.

Brain imaging studies demonstrate that sleep deprivation reduces glucose metabolism and blood flow in the prefrontal cortex, and such reductions are associated with impairments in cognitive functioning. Although some of the greatest metabolic declines occur within the orbitofrontal cortex, little is known about the effects of sleep loss on the types of processes mediated by this region, including emotion, motivation, feeding, and olfaction. The present study tested odor identification accuracy when individuals were well rested and again following 24 h of wakefulness. Relative to rested baselin

Adaptive reconfiguration of prefrontal networks during prolonged cognitive interference: Evidence from fNIRS.

In the era of information overload, understanding the brain's adaptive responses to prolonged cognitive tasks is critical. This study investigates the neural compensatory mechanisms that sustain cognitive performance under mental fatigue, offering insights into dynamic resource allocation and practical applications in high-demand settings. Twenty healthy participants performed a Stroop-based cognitive interference task while prefrontal hemodynamic activity was monitored using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Subjective fatigue was assessed via the Multidimensional Fatigue Invento

The effect of task type and perceived demands on postural movements during standing work.

This study investigated how task demands affect postural behaviour during standing. Twenty-four participants completed three different 12-min tasks: (1) a cognitive task that involved answering questions based on a written passage; (2) a light manual assembly task; and (3) standing quietly with no secondary task. The manual task was associated with the lowest amount of postural movement and a more static pose than the other two conditions. Specifically, postural variability of the lumbar (F = 5.8; p = 0.01) and thoracic (F = 4.2; p = 0.03) spine, and fidgets and shifts of the spine (F = 3.2; p

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and global mental health.

The discipline of global mental health has emphasized the importance of the treatment gap in mental disorders, and of addressing this gap via changes in health policy, an emphasis on human rights, and innovations such as task-shifting. Although global mental health research has focused on both common mental disorders such as depression, and serious mental disorders such as schizophrenia, it has paid relatively little attention to obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs). Nevertheless, international collaborations have recently paid a good deal of attention to the nosology and neurobi

Social gaze dynamics in teams: Comparing face-to-face and video meeting settings.

Understanding the factors that promote cooperative behavior in teams is essential for organizational success. While the role of verbal communication in fostering cooperation and team cohesion is well established, the impact of nonverbal signals, particularly eye contact and related patterns, known as social gaze dynamics, has been neglected. In this study, we conducted a multiparty eye-tracking experiment, enabling us to explore the relationship between social gaze, cooperation, and team cohesion. In particular, teams of three participants engaged in a two-stage task: a structured pre-play com

Heterogeneity of decision-making strategies for preschoolers on a variant of the IGT.

Adaptive decision-making strategies are critical for dealing with the complexity of the social world. The present study investigated the use of decision-making strategies in preschoolers and their association to prosocial behavior and peer problems. Eighty-six preschoolers aged 3- and 4-years completed the preschool decision-making task (PGT), a child variant of the Iowa Gambling task . Win-stay/lose-shift responses along with exploration (consecutive choices from the advantageous deck) and exploitation (shifting between options) were examined. Preschoolers showed a range of strategies, with 4

Impaired flexible decision-making in Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with dysfunctional affective states, neuropsychological impairment and altered sensitivity to reward and punishment. These impairments can influence complex decision-making in changing environments. METHODS: The contingency shifting variant Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was used to assess flexible decision-making performance in a group of medicated unipolar Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients (n=19) and a group of healthy control volunteers (n=20). The task comprised the standard IGT followed by a contingency-shift phase where decks progressively changed r

Neurologic examination abnormalities in children with bipolar disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BPD) are frequently comorbid and overlapping diagnoses. To move beyond diagnosis toward unique pathophysiology, we evaluated both ADHD and BPD children for neurologic examination abnormalities (NEAs) in comparison with normal control (NC) children. METHODS: We performed the Revised Physical and Neurological Examination for Soft Signs in three groups (ADHD, BPD, NC). Then, a rater blind to diagnosis evaluated their motor performance. Results were analyzed with a multiple analysis of covariance. RESULTS: Subjects

The Efemp1R345W Macular Dystrophy Mutation Causes Amplified Circadian and Photophobic Responses to Light in Mice.

PURPOSE: The R345W mutation in EFEMP1 causes malattia leventinese, an autosomal dominant eye disease with pathogenesis similar to an early-onset age-related macular degeneration. In mice, Efemp1R345W does not cause detectable degeneration but small subretinal deposits do accumulate. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were abnormal responses to light at this presymptomatic stage in Efemp1R345W mice. METHODS: Responses to light were assessed by visual water task, circadian phase shifting, and negative masking behavior. The mechanism of abnormal responses was investigated b

The Cognitive Drivers of Compulsive Eating Behavior.

Compulsivity is a central feature of obsessive-compulsive and addictive disorders, which share considerable overlap with excessive eating in terms of repetitive behavior despite negative consequences. Excessive eating behavior is characteristic of several eating-related conditions, including eating disorders [bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED)], obesity, and food addiction (FA). Compulsivity is proposed to be driven by four distinct cognitive components, namely, contingency-related cognitive flexibility, task/attentional set-shifting, attentional bias/disengagement and habit lea

Functional connectivity between prefrontal and parietal cortex drives visuo-spatial attention shifts.

It is well established that the frontal eye-fields (FEF) in the dorsal attention network (DAN) guide top-down selective attention. In addition, converging evidence implies a causal role for the FEF in attention shifting, which is also known to recruit the ventral attention network (VAN) and fronto-striatal regions. To investigate the causal influence of the FEF as (part of) a central hub between these networks, we applied thetaburst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TBS) off-line, combined with functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) during a cued visuo-spatial attention shifting paradigm. We fo

The relationships between rumination and core executive functions: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rumination has been thought to relate to deficits in core executive functions (EFs), but the empirical findings for this idea are mixed. The aim of the present study is to synthesize existing literature to clarify these relations. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search revealed 34 published as well as unpublished studies on the associations between rumination and core EF. These studies report on 3,066 participants. The effect size in the meta-analyses was obtained by the z transformation of correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Analysis revealed significant negative associations
