An overview of thermal necrosis: present and future.

Introduction: Many orthopaedic procedures require drilling of bone, especially fracture repair cases. Bone drilling results in heat generation due to the friction between the bone and the drill bit. A high-level of heat generation kills bone cells. Bone cell death results in resorption of bone around bone screws. Methods: We searched in the literature for data on parameters that influence drilling bone and could lead to thermal necrosis. The points of view of many orthopaedists and neurosurgeons based upon on previous practices and clinical experience are presented. Results: Several potential co

Accurate 6-DoF pose sensing and dynamic tracking enabled by a metalens-integrated camera.

Accurate six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) pose sensing is essential for autonomous systems, intelligent robotics, and the Internet of Things. Conventional pose-sensing approaches often rely on bulky imaging modules and complex visual pipelines, limiting their deployment on compact and embedded platforms. Metalens-integrated cameras provide an ultrathin optical front end, but their reduced contrast and imaging blur make pose estimation unstable. Here, we demonstrate 6-DoF pose sensing and dynamic tracking using a metalens-integrated camera assisted by an ArUco marker tailored to its imaging charac

Biatrial cardioneuroablation guided by robotic magnetic navigation and artificial intelligence-based mapping in vagal bradyarrhythmias: A controlled observational study.

PURPOSE: Reflex bradyarrhythmias and syncope related to excessive vagal tone may be refractory to conservative therapy and significantly impair quality of life. Cardioneuroablation (CNA) has emerged as a device-sparing alternative, but real-world outcome data remain limited. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 12 consecutive patients (aged 23-55 years) with drug-refractory, vagally mediated bradyarrhythmias confirmed by tilt-table testing. All underwent biatrial CNA guided by ultra-high-density electroanatomical mapping with automated fragmented-electrogram detection and robotic magnetic na

Multimodal engagement estimation in paediatric robot-assisted gait training: integrating physiological sensing and biomechanical interaction.

BACKGROUND: Patients' engagement plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of robot-assisted gait training (RAGT), particularly in paediatric neurorehabilitation, where motivation and active participation strongly influence functional outcomes. Despite its clinical relevance, engagement assessment is still largely based on subjective observation, limiting objectivity and scalability. Objective modelling of engagement in children with cerebral palsy remains underexplored, especially when relying on physiological signals acquired during therapy, due to logistical, ethical, and technological chal

Monolithically integrated silicon photonic biaxial FMCW LiDAR system.

Three-dimensional sensing is critical for autonomous systems, robotics and industrial monitoring, motivating compact frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDARs, which optically measure distance and velocity. However, current integrated designs using optical phased arrays (OPAs) for beam steering or focal-plane arrays (FPAs) for parallel reception face trade-offs in optical power, aperture and acquisition speed. Here we show a biaxial FMCW LiDAR that monolithically integrates an OPA transmitter and coherent FPA receiver with over 4500 functional components on separate optical paths, elim

Generative adversarial networks for high-fidelity 3D point cloud completion.

3D point clouds are essential for representing geometric structures in various fields such as autonomous driving and virtual reality. However, real-world data often suffers from incompleteness due to occlusions and noise, and existing completion methods typically rely on paired complete–incomplete training data or are limited to recovering relatively small missing regions, which restricts their effectiveness under high missing-rate scenarios. This paper introduces a GAN-based method for completing 3D point clouds, capable of reconstructing detailed structures from partial inputs. Our end-to-en

Cerebellum-inspired memtransistors enable emergent differentiation for hardware-efficient novelty detection.

Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are currently executed using silicon-based hardware, resulting in excessively high energy demand for data centers. Edge computing AI for healthcare, robotics, and autonomous vehicles presents even stricter power and latency constraints, which are unmet by incumbent computing architectures. With vastly superior energy efficiency, biological neuronal networks provide hints towards alternative computational approaches including memory-logic colocation, asynchronous parallelism, and spike-triggered computation. Here, we draw inspiration from the cerebellum t

OTE-SLAM: An Object Tracking Enhanced Visual SLAM System for Dynamic Environments.

With the rapid development of autonomous driving and robotics applications in recent years, visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has become a hot research topic. The majority of visual SLAM systems relies on the assumption of scene rigidity, which may not always hold true in real applications. In dynamic environments, SLAM systems, without accounting for dynamic objects, will easily fail to estimate the camera pose. Some existing methods attempt to address this issue by simply excluding the dynamic features lying in moving objects. But this may lead to a shortage of features for

Improving Upper Extremity Bradykinesia in Parkinson's Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial on the Use of Gravity-Supporting Exoskeletons.

Hand movements are particularly impaired in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), contributing to functional disability and difficulties in activities of daily living. Growing evidence has shown that robot-assisted therapy may be considered an effective and reliable method for the delivery of the highly repetitive training that is needed to trigger neuroplasticity, as intensive, repetitive and task-oriented training could be an ideal strategy to facilitate the relearning of motor function and to minimize motor deficit. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the improvement of hand function

A Self-Healing Magnetoelectric Sensor with Pain Sensing for Underwater Soft Electronics.

Replicating the skin's ability to sense touch, feel pain, and heal itself is key to developing the next generation of durable soft electronics. These capabilities become more critical in underwater environments, where divers and underwater machines face severe challenges such as limited dexterity, device damage, and restricted power availability. Here, we develop a self-healing magnetoelectric sensory system (SMES) that uniquely integrates self-powered tactile and proximity sensing with damage detection and autonomous recovery for amphibious operation. The SMES features a multilayer architectu

Surface Electromyography Reliably Records Electrophysiologically Evoked Internal Anal Sphincter Activity: A More Minimally Invasive Approach for Monitoring Extrinsic Innervation.

BACKGROUND: Even in the case of minimally invasive pelvic surgery, sparing of the autonomic nerve supply is a prerequisite for maintaining anal sphincter function. Internal anal sphincter (IAS) innervation could be electrophysiologically identified based on processed electromyographic (EMG) recordings with conventional bipolar needle electrodes (NE). This experimental study aimed for the development of a minimally invasive approach via intra-anal surface EMG for recordings of evoked IAS activity. METHODS: Six male pigs underwent nerve-sparing low anterior rectal resection. Electric autonomic

3D Localization of Heat Sources Using LiDAR-Thermal Data Fusion and Multisensor Calibration.

Integration of LiDAR and thermal sensing has become increasingly important in robotics, infrastructure diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and autonomous perception systems. LiDAR sensors provide accurate three-dimensional geometric information but do not directly capture thermal properties of observed objects, whereas thermal cameras provide temperature distributions without explicit spatial structure. Fusion of both sensing modalities enables thermally augmented 3D scene reconstruction and spatial localization of temperature anomalies. This paper presents a practical LiDAR-thermal fusion
