The Nutmeg Lung Pattern in a Fetus with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Turner Syndrome.

The "nutmeg lung pattern" on fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicates pulmonary lymphangiectasia. This is associated with adverse outcomes, particularly in fetuses with congenital heart defects and impaired pulmonary venous return. Whereas lymphedema is common in fetuses with Turner syndrome, pulmonary lymphangiectasia is not. A 26-year-old woman presented with a fetus with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) without restrictive atrial septum (RAS). The family declined amniocentesis, yet non-invasive prenatal testing showed an increased risk for Turner syndrome. The patient underwen

Identification of a Novel FLT4 c.3028A>C Variant Associated With Milroy Disease.

VEGFR3 (FLT4) is crucial for embryonic lymphangiogenesis, and defects in this receptor can lead to congenital lymphedema type 1A (Milroy disease). This study analyses FLT4 gene sequence in 24 primary lymphedema patients, identifying genetic variants in five patients resembling typical Milroy disease. A novel likely pathogenic variant (c.3028A>C) was identified, and the pathogenicity of two previously described variants (c.3175G>C and c.3298T>C) was supported.

Lymphaticovenous anastomosis and resection for genital acquired lymphangiectasia (GAL).

The purpose of this paper is to report on the relationship between lymphoscintigraphic findings and the operative results of lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) as well as the resection of genital acquired lymphangiectasia (GAL). Seventeen patients with GAL who underwent lymphoscintigraphy between April 2012 and June 2016 were included in this retrospective study. LVA and GAL resections were performed for 14 patients. The GALs were resected in a spindle shape to the full thickness of the genital skin, and the wounds were closed primarily. Following the procedure, we investigated the recurrence

Pulmonary cysts in smoking-related interstitial fibrosis: a form of pseudocyst secondary to pulmonary interstitial emphysema.

Smoking-related interstitial fibrosis is a distinct form of fibrosis, found in smokers, which has striking histopathological features. We present a case of pulmonary interstitial fibrosis with cysts in a 58-year-old woman who was a significant active smoker, presenting with a 7 month history of progressive dyspnea. TAC revealed thin-walled pulmonary cysts. An open lung biopsy was performed and the histopathological study showed hyaline fibrous thickening of the alveolar septa, respiratory bronchiolitis and cysts in the thickness of the interlobar septa. Immunohistochemically, the absence of an

Congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasia and early mortality after stage 1 reconstruction procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary lymphangiectasia associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome with an intact or restrictive atrial septum may result from increased left atrial pressure, and is associated with worse outcomes following staged reconstruction due to lung dysfunction and significant hypoxaemia. Our objective was to characterise the incidence of pulmonary lymphangiectasia in cases of early mortality following stage 1 reconstructions. METHODS: An institutional cardiac surgical database was retrospectively searched for patients who died within 30 days following a stage 1 reconstruction betw

Secretory diarrhea with protein-losing enteropathy, enterocolitis cystica superficialis, intestinal lymphangiectasia, and congenital hepatic fibrosis: a new syndrome.

Four infants had noninfectious intractable diarrhea, vomiting, anasarca, hepatomegaly, hypoglycemia, and malnutrition within the first 3 months of life. Their parents originated from the same Northeastern part of Quebec, and consanguinity was found in two kindreds. Diarrhea was secretory in three infants (mean stool volume 87 ml/kg/day, Na+ 108 mEq/L, Cl- 85 mEq/L). Hypoalbuminemia (mean 2.0 gm/dl), present in all infants, appeared to be secondary to a protein-losing enteropathy, which was documented in two infants. Histologic examination of the upper small intestine showed only mild to modera

Hyperplasia of Lymphoid Follicles and Lymphangiectasia in the Parietal Pleura in Bucillamine-induced Yellow Nail Syndrome.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) pleurisy is often difficult to control, and pathological examinations have rarely been reported. We herein report a case of bucillamine-induced YNS in which histopathology of the parietal pleura revealed hyperplasia of the lymphoid follicles and lymphangiectasia. Even after the discontinuation of bucillamine, the pleurisy and lymphedema showed no change. Based on the histopathological findings showing similarity to rheumatoid pleurisy, we administered corticosteroid treatments, and both the pleurisy and lymphedema improved. The findings in the present case suggest th

An approach to familial lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is the build-up of lymphatic fluid leading to swelling in the tissues. Most commonly it affects the peripheries. Diagnosis is based on clinical assessment and imaging with lymphoscintigraphy. Treatment is supportive with compression garments, massage, good skin hygiene and prompt use of antibiotics to avoid the complication of cellulitis. Most commonly, lymphoedema occurs as a result of damage to the lymphatic system following surgery, trauma, radiation or infection. However, it can be primary, often associated with a genetic defect that causes disruption to the development of the

Abdominal lymphangiomatosis in a 38-year-old female: case report and literature review.

Lymphangioma is an uncommon benign tumor that develops in the lymphatic system. Abdominal lymphangiomatosis is extremely rare in adult patients, and the clinical symptoms of this condition are complicated and atypical. We report a case of abdominal lymphangiomatosis in a 38-year-old female who presented with intestinal bleeding and protein-losing enteropathy, as well as lesions in the lung and bones. A computed tomography scan revealed multiple small cystic lesions without enhancement. Histological examination revealed microscopic cysts were submucosal, with walls composed of thin fibrous tiss

Acquired intestinal lymphangiectasia successfully treated with a low-fat and medium-chain triacylglycerol-enriched diet in a patient with liver transplantation.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia is defined as a dilatation of small bowel lymphatic capillaries and a loss of lymph into the bowel lumen. Clinically it is characterized by hypoproteinaemia and oedema. We present here a case of protein-losing enteropathy due to intestinal lymphangiectasia after liver transplantation in a 57-year-old man who was transplanted for hepatitis C virus. Four years after liver transplantation, the patient developed hypoalbuminaemia and ascites associated with recurrence of cirrhosis. The sudden fall in serum albumin led us to look for a cause of reduction other than or in

A case of the yellow nail syndrome associated with massive chylous ascites, pleural and pericardial effusions.

A 26-year-old male patient with a history of chronic peripheral lymphedema, yellowish coloured slow growing nails and pleural effusions since early childhood is described. After 23 years he developed a chylous ascites and scintigraphy with technetium-99m labeled albumin clearly demonstrated a diffuse protein loss involving the whole jejunum and ileum. Subsequent jejunal and duodenal biopsies showed the typical histological findings of intestinal lymphangiectasia thereby confirming a diffuse intestinal lymphatic damage. In addition to the gastrointestional symptoms the patient developed a peric

[Intestinal involvement and exudative enteropathy in Waldenström's macroglobulinemia].

The case of a 60 year old man in whom diarrhea, steatorrhea and protein losing enteropathy developed one year after the diagnosis of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is reported. Histological study of multilevel peroral biopsies of the small bowel mucosa showed the following features: a) lymphangiectasia, b) intralymphatic and interstitial deposits composed of lipids and immunoglobulin M of the kappa type (as demonstrated by specific histoimmunofluorescence), c) a mild lymphoplasmocytoid infiltrate, corresponding to the location of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia. The patient died six months la

Lymphedema after upper limb transplantation: scintigraphic study in 3 patients.

Lymphatic vasculature is known to spontaneously reconnect after hand replantation. Nonetheless, lymphatic outflow has not been specifically studied in hand transplantation.Lymphedema was studied clinically and scintigraphically in 3 bilateral upper limb transplants performed in Valencia, Spain, since 2006. Case 1 was a radiocarpal level, case 2 midforearm and proximal forearm, and case 3 was a transhumeral transplantation. Follow-up was 5, 4, and 3 years, respectively. Clinically, in case 1, there was a left-sided moderate lymphedema, case 2 was normal, and a right-sided moderate lymphedema wa

Gastropathies in the Lundehund. I. Gastritis and gastric neoplasia associated with intestinal lymphangiectasia.

The results from gross and microscopic examination of the stomachs of Lundehunds and examination of stomachs of control dogs from other breeds were compared. Over a 13-year period, 12 of 14 autopsied Lundehunds have been diagnosed as having intestinal lymphangiectasia. In the present study, histological examination revealed gastritis as manifested by an increase in the number of mononuclear cells infiltrating the lamina propria in all the Lundehunds. The inflammation was chronic and restricted to the fundic and body regions, except in one Lundehund where antral gastritis was also present. Comp

[Radiological aspects of viral respiratory diseases in childhood].

The radiological diagnosis of viral pneumopathy must be backed up by laboratory examinations. There are several lung dysplasias that my mimic viral pneumopathy, especially in the newborn. Reference is also made to the radiological techniques applicable in the investigation of upper airway virosis in children. Note is taken of the fact that several forms typical of the first and second period of childhood are currently encountered in children undergoing immunodepressive therapy.
