Evidencing Superior Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the rates of recurrence, complications, and patient satisfaction among individuals undergoing different variations of the Winograd method (WM) for the treatment of ingrown toenail, including the addition of electrocoagulation (EC) and a novel suture technique. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 605 patients who underwent surgery for ingrown toenail using the WM at two institutions. Patients were divided into four groups based on the surgical technique used: group 1 (WM + EC + new suture), group 2 (WM + EC + traditional suture), group 3 (

Formable acrylic treatment for ingrowing nail with gutter splint and sculptured nail.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of choice for an ingrowing nail has been surgical rather than nonsurgical. Yet, surgical treatments are far from successful, cause pain and patient apprehension, and leave disfigurement. Further, there is misunderstanding about the disease pathophysiology. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the benefits of a noninvasive method of treatment for an ingrowing nail using gutter splint and formable acrylics and to present a current understanding of the disease pathophysiology. METHODS: From a total of 541 cases of ingrowing nails treated, full follow-up data were obtained between

Effect of curettage after segmental phenolization in the treatment of onychocryptosis: a randomized double-blind clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Segmental phenolization for the treatment of onychocryptosis has a number of disadvantages, resulting from the cauterization of the tissue, including delayed healing and prolonged drainage. Although one may expect excision or curettage of the cauterized tissue after phenolization to benefit the healing process, these simple procedures have not been suitably studied. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of curettage primarily on cicatrization or healing time and secondarily on postoperative bleeding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients (80 feet) with stage I or IIa onychocryptos

Segmental phenolization for the treatment of ingrowing toenails: a review of 6 years experience.

BACKGROUND: Ingrowing toenails are a common problem causing significant morbidity. Many of the procedures used for treating this painful condition cause considerable discomfort and have high failure rates. In recent years, phenol cauterization of the nail bed has been used increasingly. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out of all patients treated by this method in the authors' clinic during the period January 1996 to December 2001. In this study, phenol cauterization is the standard form of treatment and 948 phenol cauterizations were carried out in 764 patients. RESULTS: There was

OBJECTIVE: To report five cases of ingrown toenails (IGTN) associated with indinavir/ritonavir (IDV/RTV) combination therapy. CASE SUMMARY: The median onset of IGTN from initiation of IDV/RTV therapy was 18.4 weeks. Four patients previously received IDV, with one of these experiencing prior IGTN. All patients required surgical management of IGTN. All patients received virologic benefit from ongoing antiretroviral therapy, and the majority of patients elected to maintain IDV/RTV combination therapy. Two patients experienced recurrent IGTN while receiving ongoing IDV/RTV combination therapy. D

Minimizing postoperative drainage with 20% ferric chloride after chemical matricectomy with phenol.

BACKGROUND: Phenol used in partial matricectomy shows its effects by denaturing matrix proteins. This highly successful method has the major problem of oozing which can continue for 5-6 weeks. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the effect of 20% ferric chloride (FC) (FeCl3) on minimizing the oozing after chemical matricectomy with phenol. METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with stage III onychocryptosis were treated by chemical matricectomy with 90% aqueous phenol. In 32 of these patients FC was applied to the nail bed after the phenolization procedure. RESULTS: We found a statis

Congenital hypertrophy of the lateral nail folds of the hallux: clinical features and follow-up of seven cases.

Congenital hypertrophy of the nail folds of the hallux describes an abnormality of the periungual soft tissues of the big toe characterized by hypertrophy of the nail fold which partially covers the nail plate and is frequently associated with inflammation and pain due to an ingrowing nail. We describe the clinical picture and follow-up of seven patients with this abnormality. In three patients the affected toe showed an asymptomatic, dome-shaped, hypertrophic lip that partially covered the nail plate. Four patients had acute inflammatory changes due to toenail ingrowth, with considerable swel

The effect on satisfaction and functional perception of showing preoperative photographs during follow-up after ingrown toenail surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Ingrown toenail surgery is a standard procedure that can significantly affect a patient's quality of life. While preoperative photo demonstration has been proven to enhance patient satisfaction in other surgical fields, its potential in ingrown toenail surgery remains unexplored. The primary objective of this study is to investigate whether exposure to preoperative photographs influences the perception of postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing ingrown toenail surgery using the Winograd technique. METHODS: This retrospective study included 126 patients who underwent ingrow

Trichloroacetic acid matricectomy in the treatment of ingrowing toenails.

BACKGROUND: Ingrowing toenails can be treated with conservative therapy or surgery, but frequent relapse can be a problem in conservative therapy and surgical therapy without matricectomy. Thus, permanent nail ablation by partial matricectomy is now accepted as the treatment of choice. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) matricectomy in the treatment of ingrowing nail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty ingrowing toenail edges in 25 patients were enrolled. TCA matricectomy with 100% trichloroacetic acid after partial nail avulsion was performed. For a few w
