Machine Learning-Based Analysis of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Images for Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Background/Objectives: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment among the elderly. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive imaging modality that enables detailed visualisation of retinal vascular layers. However, clinical assessment of OCTA images is often challenging due to high data volume, pattern variability, and subtle abnormalities. This study aimed to develop automated algorithms to detect and quantify AMD in OCTA images, thereby reducing ophthalmologists' workload and enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Methods: Two texture-b

Machine learning-based prediction of high hospital charges after lung transplantation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation is an important therapeutic option for patients with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, post-transplantation hospitalizations are associated with substantial cost variation. Accurately predicting high in-hospital expenditures is essential for optimizing clinical management and healthcare resource allocation. METHODS: This study utilized the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database (2005–2014) to identify adult patients who underwent lung transplantation. After rigorous data preprocessing, seven post-discharge or manually coded variables were

Integrating explainable artificial intelligence with multiomics systems biology and electronic health record data mining for personalized drug repurposing in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by region- and patient-specific molecular heterogeneity, which hinders therapeutic design. In this study, we introduce PRISM-ML (PRecision-medicine using Interpretable Systems and Multiomics with Machine Learning), an open-source integrated analysis pipeline that combines interpretable machine learning with systems biology and electronic health records data mining to elucidate the molecular diversity of AD and predict promising drug repurposing opportunities. First, we integrated and harmonized transcriptomic (bulk RNA-seq) and genomic (genome-wide ass

Estimating Ground Reaction Forces from Gait Kinematics in Cerebral Palsy: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach.

PURPOSE: While gait analysis is essential for assessing neuromotor disorders like cerebral palsy (CP), capturing accurate ground reaction force (GRF) measurements during natural walking presents challenges, particularly due to variations in gait patterns. Previous studies have explored GRF prediction using machine learning, but specific focus on patients with CP is lacking. This research aims to address this gap by predicting GRF using joint angles derived from marker data during gait in patients with CP, thereby suggesting a protocol for gait analysis without the need for force plates. Evaluating imaging biomarkers for neurodegeneration in pre-symptomatic Huntington's disease using machine learning techniques.

The development of MRI measures as biomarkers for neurodegenerative disease could prove extremely valuable for the assessment of neuroprotective therapies. Much current research is aimed at developing such biomarkers for use in people who are gene-positive for Huntington's disease yet exhibit few or no clinical symptoms of the disease (pre-HD). We acquired structural (T1), diffusion weighted and functional MRI (fMRI) data from 39 pre-HD volunteers and 25 age-matched controls. To determine whether it was possible to decode information about disease state from neuroimaging data, we applied multi

Interplay between gait and neuropsychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease which involves both motor and non-motor symptoms. Non-motor mental symptoms are very common among patients with PD since the earliest stage. In this context, gait analysis allows to detect quantitative gait variables to distinguish patients affected by non-motor mental symptoms from patients without these symptoms. A cohort of 68 PD subjects (divided in two groups) was acquired through gait analysis (single and double task) and spatial temporal parameters were analysed; first with a statistical analysis and then with a machine learning (M

On Leveraging Machine Learning in Sport Science in the Hypothetico-deductive Framework.

Supervised machine learning (ML) offers an exciting suite of algorithms that could benefit research in sport science. In principle, supervised ML approaches were designed for pure prediction, as opposed to explanation, leading to a rise in powerful, but opaque, algorithms. Recently, two subdomains of ML-explainable ML, which allows us to "peek into the black box," and interpretable ML, which encourages using algorithms that are inherently interpretable-have grown in popularity. The increased transparency of these powerful ML algorithms may provide considerable support for the hypothetico-deduc

Explainable Machine Learning to Predict Anchored Reentry Substrate Created by Persistent Atrial Fibrillation Ablation in Computational Models.

Background Postablation arrhythmia recurrence occurs in ~40% of patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. Fibrotic remodeling exacerbates arrhythmic activity in persistent atrial fibrillation and can play a key role in reentrant arrhythmia, but emergent interaction between nonconductive ablation-induced scar and native fibrosis (ie, residual fibrosis) is poorly understood. Methods and Results We conducted computational simulations in pre- and postablation left atrial models reconstructed from late gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scans to test the hypothesis that ablation in
