Dental traumatology : official publication of International Association for Dental Traumatology2006eng
The aim was to compare the long-term outcomes of root canal treatment with that of follow-up-only in traumatized primary incisors in which dark discoloration is the only sign of injury. Root canal treatment was performed in 48 dark discolored asymptomatic primary incisors following trauma. Twenty-five of them [root canal treatment (RCT) group] were followed till eruption of their permanent successors. Ninety-seven dark discolored asymptomatic primary incisors were left untreated and invited for periodic clinical and radiographic examination. Of these, 28 [follow-up (FU) group] were followed ti

AIM: This report addresses the management of a large persistent discharging lesion in an 11-year-old boy. The report describes the use of aspiration-irrigation technique for the management of immature necrotic tooth with persistent discharge after a failed regenerative procedure.
BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics aim to provide an increase in root canal width, length, and in apical closure. Alternative procedures, such as apexification, should be attempted when regeneration fails. If the canal cannot be dried to persistent discharge, the aspiration-irrigation technique can be used. The tec

A necrotic immature mandibular second premolar with periapical involvement in a 13-year-old patient was treated. Instead of the standard root canal treatment protocol and apexification, antimicrobial agents were used in the canal, after which the canal was left empty. Radiographic examination showed the start of apical closure 5 months after the completion of the antimicrobial protocol. Thickening of the canal wall and complete apical closure was confirmed 30 months after the treatment, indicating the revascularization potential of a young permanent tooth pulp into a bacteria-free root canal s

The treatment and follow-up evaluation of two orally luxated maxillary primary central incisors in a three-year-old girl is described. The injured teeth were displaced into a cross-bite with their mandibular opposing teeth. They were repositioned shortly after the injury and splinted with composite resin for two weeks. Oral hygiene instructions and antibiotic therapy were prescribed. Two weeks after the injury a necrotic pulp was removed and the root canals filled with a resorbable paste. Thirty months after the injury, the teeth and the surrounding tissues were clinically and radiographically

CONTEXT: The primary teeth's unique histological properties and interactions with the oral cavity pose a challenge in treatment, unlike the permanent teeth. A repaired natural tooth maintains space better than an artificial one. These factors lead to a greater emphasis on saving the tooth by pulpectomy involving effective chemical cleaning and disinfection of canals than on meticulous mechanical canal shaping. As chemically available irrigants show cytotoxic effects, hence herbal-based irrigants are being considered viable options.
AIM: The present study was undertaken to compare and assess t

BACKGROUND: Surface roughness plays a crucial role in microbial adhesion and retention on dental crowns, contributing to secondary infections and the development of periodontal diseases through bacterial plaque accumulation. In treating pulpitis of primary teeth via pulpectomy, dental crowns are often used as full-coverage restorative solutions. Among the most widely utilized crowns are stainless steel and zirconia crowns. However, zirconia crowns present drawbacks, such as excessive tooth reduction and increased wear on opposing teeth, while stainless steel crowns (SSCs) pose esthetic limitat

This study reports a case of complicated crown-root fractures of the maxillary central incisors (teeth 8 and 9) in a 10-year-old boy. Vital pulpotomy and iRoot BP Plus capping were performed to protect the pulp. The fractured crown fragments were used to restore the tooth morphology, and the esthetics and function of both central incisors were restored. The roots of the affected teeth continued to develop normally. Twenty-five months after the initial treatment, the patient suffered another trauma, resulting in a second dislodgement of the fractured crown of the left maxillary central incisor.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess pulp survival in a randomized trial on pulp lavage in adult nonpainful posterior teeth with carious pulp exposure. The treatment included complete caries excavation, direct pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate, and immediate restoration with composite resin.
METHODS: Fluid was collected from the pulp wound to assess matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and total protein values. Before pulp capping, cavities were randomly (block randomization, n = 48) washed with a physiological saline or a sodium hypochlorite solution (2.5% NaOCl). Treatment outc

We present two cases of apical extrusion of non-setting, calcium hydroxide paste which had been placed as an interappointment root canal dressing during routine endodontic treatment resulting in tissue necrosis of a large part of the mandible. Surgical intervention consisted of resections in both instances. In relation to the cases presented, a systematic review of similar cases in the literature between 1980 and April 2013 was conducted which resulted in eight cases meeting the criteria outlined. As with the two presented cases, half of these eight cases showed serious adverse effects and the
