A technique to identify and reconstruct the cementoenamel junction level using combined periodontal and restorative treatment of gingival recession. A prospective clinical study.

Gingival recession is often associated with abrasion in the cervical area with an unidentifiable cementoenamel junction (CEJ). This condition complicates the diagnosis and treatment of gingival recession. The aim of this study was to propose a technique to identify the CEJ level for planning periodontal and restorative treatment of the recession. The CEJ of a contralateral homologous tooth or adjacent teeth was used to replicate the lost CEJ at the treated tooth. Reconstruction of the CEJ using composite resin and a coronally advanced flap, with or without a connective tissue graft, was perfor

Quantitative evaluation of maxillary interradicular bone with cone-beam computed tomography for bicortical placement of orthodontic mini-implants.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to propose a protocol for safe bicortical placement of mini-implants by measuring the interradicular spaces of the maxillary teeth and the bone quality. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography data were obtained from 50 adults. Three-dimensional reconstructions and measurements were made with SimplantPro software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). For each interradicular site, the bone thicknesses and interradicular distances at the planes 1.5, 3, 6, and 9 mm above the cementoenamel junction were measured. Standard bone units were defined to evaluate th

Bone dimensions in the posterior mandible: a retrospective radiographic study using cone beam computed tomography. Part 1--analysis of dentate sites.

This retrospective radiographic study analyzed the dimensions of the alveolar bone in the posterior dentate mandible based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. A total of 56 CBCT images met the inclusion criteria, resulting in a sample size of 122 cross sections showing posterior mandibular teeth (premolars and molars). The thickness of the buccal and lingual bone walls was measured at two locations: 4 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction (measurement point 1, MP1) and at the middle of the root (measurement point 2, MP2). Further, alveolar bone width was assessed at the level of

Thickness of the anterior maxillary facial bone wall-a retrospective radiographic study using cone beam computed tomography.

The purpose of this retrospective radiographic study was to analyze the thickness of the facial bone wall at teeth in the anterior maxilla based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, since this anatomical structure is important for the selection of an appropriate treatment approach in patients undergoing postextraction implant placement. A total of 125 CBCT scans met the inclusion criteria, resulting in a sample size of 498 teeth. The thickness of the facial bone wall in the respective sagittal scans was measured perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth at two locations: at the cr

Generalized cervical root resorption associated with periodontal disease.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND DESCRIPTION OF CASE: The etiology and pathogenesis of generalized cervical root resorptions is not well understood. In the present report, a case of severe cervical root resorption involving 24 anterior and posterior teeth is presented. The lesions developed within a period of 2 years after the patient had changed to an acid-enriched diet. They extended far into the coronal dentin and were associated with gingival inflammation and crestal bone resorption. However, no generalized clinical attachment loss had occurred. Culturing of subgingival plaque revealed the prese

Effects of chlorpromazine on alveolar bone loss in experimental periodontal disease in rats.

Chlorpromazine (CPZ), a phenothiazine derivative, possesses anti-inflammatory properties, inhibition of tumor neurosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) synthesis and bone resorption. TNF-alpha promotes inflammatory changes and bone resorption in periodontitis. We have studied the effect of CPZ in experimental periodontitis. Wistar rats were subjected to a ligature placement around the cervix of the right second upper molars. Alveolar bone loss was evaluated by the sum of the distances between the cusp tip and the alveolar bone along the axis of each molar root, which was subtracted from the contralate

The free rotated papilla autograft: a new bilaminar grafting procedure for the coverage of multiple shallow gingival recessions.

The aim of this clinical pilot study is to evaluate the possibility and from a statistical point of view, the predictability of a new mucogingival technique. The purpose of this surgical procedure is to cover the exposed buccal root surface with less than 5 mm clinical probing attachment loss either in corono-apical or mesio-distal aspects. This surgical procedure is particularly indicated in either single or multiple gingival recessions with perfectly preserved mesial and distal interproximal osseous crests, and with a papillary dimension not inferior to the defect which needs to be treated.

The partly epithelialized free gingival graft (pe-fgg) at lower incisors. A pilot study with implications for alignment of the mucogingival junction.

AIMS: A partly epithelialized free gingival graft (PE-FGG) is described for the treatment of isolated and multiple gingival recessions in lower incisors to improve root coverage potential and mucogingival junction (MGJ) alignment. METHODS: Twelve single gingival recessions in 12 patients and 16 multiple recessions in 7 patients at lower incisors were included. A FGG partly deprived of epithelium was harvested from the palate. The epithelialized coronal part of the graft extended from the CEJ to the "ideal" position of the MGJ of the recession site/s. The apical part of the PE-FGG deprived of

Free gingival grafts to increase keratinized tissue: a retrospective long-term evaluation (10 to 25 years) of outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Gingival augmentation procedures are indicated primarily to increase an insufficient amount of gingiva and sometimes to halt the progression of gingival recession. The aim of this retrospective long-term study was to evaluate changes in the amount of keratinized tissue (KT) and in the position of the gingival margin after free gingival graft procedures over a period of 10 to 25 years. METHODS: One hundred three subjects presenting with 224 sites completely lacking attached gingiva associated with gingival recessions were treated in a private practice. The experimental sites were t

EDTA gel root conditioning: lack of effect on clinical and radiographic outcomes of intrabony defect treatment with enamel matrix derivative.

BACKGROUND: The adjunctive use of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in the surgical therapy of intrabony defects results in improved outcomes compared to surgical debridement alone. However, the role of EDTA root conditioning in EMD therapy has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to compare the 12-month outcomes of EMD application with and without EDTA root conditioning in intrabony defect surgical therapy. METHODS: Twenty-eight chronic periodontitis patients, each contributing a 2- or 3-wall intrabony defect (> or = 4 mm deep and > or = 2 mm wide), participated. Patients consec

Endodontic and periodontal treatment of an external cervical resorption.

External root resorption can be divided into 3 categories: 1) progressive inflammatory resorption; 2) cervical resorption; and 3) replacement resorption. Cervical resorption is a not well recognized type of progressive external inflammatory resorption. It occurs after injury to the cervical attachment apparatus, mostly in the area of the cervical root surface (precementum) below the epithelial attachment. The present article describes an abnormal case of cervical resorption in a vital lateral maxillary incisor of a 27-year-old male patient. Endodontic treatment and subsequent periodontal plast
