Mandibular reconstruction in Goldenhar syndrome using temporalis muscle osteofascial flap.

Goldenhar syndrome is a well-known developmental anomaly of the maxillofacial skeleton and hemifacial soft tissue. Maxillofacial anomalies of that syndrome can be managed by a variety of means such as inlay- or onlay-applied nonvascularized bone grafts, vascularized osteocutaneous/osseous flaps, or distraction osteogenesis. Vascularized full-thickness calvarial bone grafting is an important option for mandibular reconstruction for cases in which, for one reason or another, other techniques are not available, not applicable, or have failed. A mandibular defect of a 6-year-old boy presenting wit

MR abnormalities of the lateral pterygoid muscle in patients with nonreducing disk displacement of the TMJ.

The aim of this study was to investigate the pathological changes of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with anterior disk displacement with nonreduction (ADDnr) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and to compare the abnormal findings of the LPM with the clinical symptoms and other pathological MRI alterations of the TMJ. Bilateral or unilateral ADDnr was demonstrated in 142 patents by MRI (176 TMJs; 106 females; 36 males; range 19 to 72 years; mean 43.9 years). In 123 TMJs, the LPMs were clearly observed in MRIs and analyzed in this study. P

Two pathological fractures due to mandibular metastasis, rare in colon cancer; a case report presentation.

We reported on 65 years old patient who has colon cancer and referred to our palliative care center with pain due to enlarging metastatic mass on the dorsal of the right hand. She had swelling and numbness on her jaw. Computed tomography (CT) scan was performed for mandible imaging and two pathologic fractures were detected on the right corpus and right condyle of the mandible. Clinicians should consider possible metastases for terminal stage cancer patients.

Development of a Rat Model of Mechanically Induced Tunable Pain and Associated Temporomandibular Joint Responses.

PURPOSE: Although mechanical overloading of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is implicated in TMJ osteoarthritis (OA) and orofacial pain, most experimental models of TMJ-OA induce only acute and resolving pain, which do not meaningfully simulate the pathomechanisms of TMJ-OA in patients with chronic pain. The aim of this study was to adapt an existing rat model of mechanically induced TMJ-OA, to induce persistent orofacial pain by altering only the jaw-opening force, and to measure the expression of common proxies of TMJ-OA, including degradation and inflammatory proteins, in the joint. Histomorphometry in antigen-induced arthritis of the rabbit temporomandibular joint.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can cause severe growth disturbances of the craniomandibular system. Antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) of the rabbit TMJ is simulating the inflammatory process of the TMJ in JIA. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a systemic administration of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) antagonist etanercept on AIA in rabbits by means of three different histological staining methods. METHODS: After sensitization, a bilateral arthritis of the TMJ was induced and maintained by repeated intra-articu

Thoracodorsal nerve graft for reconstruction of facial nerve branching.

OBJECT: Surgical treatment of parotid malignancies may frequently involve facial nerve amputation to achieve oncological radical resection. The entire facial nerve branching from its exit from the stylomastoid foramen to the periphery of the gland is often sacrificed. The first reconstructive strategy is the immediate reconstruction of the facial nerve by directly anastomosing the trunk of the facial nerve to its distal branches by interpositional nerve grafting. The present study was performed to determine the adequacy of thoracodorsal nerve grafting for immediate repair of the facial nerve.

Measurements on 3D models of human skulls derived from two different cone beam CT scanners.

The aims of this study were to compare measurements on three-dimensional (3D) models of human skulls derived from two different cone beam CT scanners (CBCT) and to evaluate if the used hardware can influence the performed measurements. CBCT scans of 40 dry human skulls with both the i-CAT and the Iluma cone beam CT scanners were made. From the CBCT scans, 3D models were constructed. One operator identified 19 landmarks five times on both types of 3D models with a time interval of 1 week. Intra-observer reliability was high for most measurements. There was a statistically significant and clinic

Stress analysis in human temporomandibular joint affected by anterior disc displacement during prolonged clenching.

Parafunctional habits, such as prolonged clenching and bruxism, have been associated with dysfunctional overloading in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In this study, stress distributions in the TMJ were analysed during prolonged clenching, using three-dimensional finite element (FE) models of the TMJ with and without disc displacement. The aim of this study was to investigate stress distribution of the cartilaginous tissues in the TMJ with and without disc displacement. Finite element models were developed on the basis of magnetic resonance images from two subjects with and without anterior

Effect of different doses of transforming growth factor-β₁ on cartilage and subchondral bone in osteoarthritic temporomandibular joints.

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) plays an important part in the repair of cartilage in osteoarthritis. It has been hypothesised that intra-articular injection of TGF-β₁ promotes repair of cartilage and protects the subchondral bone from damage in osteoarthritic temporomandibular joints (TMJs). We made bilateral partial perforations of the disc to induce osteoarthritic joints in 36 rabbits. TGF-β₁ 20, 40, or 80 ng were injected into the right joint, and vehicle alone was injected into the left joint. Four additional animals were used as normal controls. Microcomputed tomography was used

Point-to-point registration with mandibulo-maxillary splint in open and closed jaw position. Evaluation of registration accuracy for computer-aided surgery of the mandible.

INTRODUCTION: Computer navigation plays an increasingly important role in craniomaxillofacial surgery. The difficulties in computer navigation at the craniomaxillofacial site lie in the accurate transmission of the dataset to the operating room. This study investigates the accuracy of the dental-splint registration method for the skull, midface, and mandible. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A synthetic human skull model was prepared with landmarks and scanned with cone beam computer tomography (CBCT). Two registration splints fixed the mandible against the viscerocranium in two different positions (clo
