Exploring the influence of different habitats and their volatile chemistry in modulating sand fly population structure in a leishmaniasis endemic foci, Kenya.

Phlebotomine sand flies transmit many viral protozoan and bacterial pathogens of public health importance. Knowledge of the ecologic factors influencing their distribution at local scale can provide insights into disease epidemiology and avenues for targeted control. Animal sheds, termite mounds and houses are important peri-domestic and domestic habitats utilized by different sand flies as resting or breeding habitats. However, our knowledge for selection of these habitats by sand flies remains poor. Here, we tested the hypothesis that these habitat types harbor different composition of sand

[Occurrence of the nematode Uncinaria stenocephala in dogs from the Warsaw region].

Uncinaria stenocephala is the most important and widely distributed species of hookworm nematode in Poland. The distribution of this hookworm in dogs in Warsaw region was investigated. We found that percentage of house pets infected with U. stenocephala is much lower (from 2.7 to 4.1%) than that of dogs living in shelters for homeless animals (from 10.1 to 47.7%). Particularly high percentage of infected dogs was found in Celestynów, where the density of population was higher and the shelter is surrounded by a forest. It is suggested that environmental conditions may be very important for the

Traveller exposures to animals: a GeoSentinel analysis.

BACKGROUND: Human coexistence with other animals can result in both intentional and unintentional contact with a variety of mammalian and non-mammalian species. International travellers are at risk for such encounters; travellers risk injury, infection and possibly death from domestic and wild animal bites, scratches, licks and other exposures. The aim of the present analysis was to understand the diversity and distribution of animal-related exposures among international travellers. METHODS: Data from January 2007 through December 2018 from the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network were reviewed.

Establishment of Expanded Botanical Thresholds of Toxicological Concern: Enrichment of Botanical PoD Databases and New Thresholds.

The Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) approach is widely used for safety assessment of chemicals with limited toxicological data, but its application to botanical extracts remains limited due to challenges in chemical constituent identification. Kawamoto et al. proposed a Botanical-TTC value of 663 μg/day (1st percentile of the DNEL/DMEL distribution) from 213 repeated-dose toxicity points of departure (PoDs), but regulatory bodies raised concerns about dataset size. This study established an Expanded Botanical-TTC by verifying the original dataset and enriching it to 518 PoDs, comprehe

Comparative pharmacokinetics of total ginsenosides between young and aging mice.

INTRODUCTION: Ginsenosides, the primary bioactive constituents of ginseng, are widely recognized as popular natural products with anti-aging properties. However, they generally exhibit poor oral bioavailability. Moreover, existing pharmacokinetic studies have predominantly focused on young animal models, leaving a critical gap in understanding how aging alters the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of these compounds. This study aims to elucidate the multi-component pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution profiles of total ginsenosides following oral administration in both yo

Sexually dimorphic distribution of kiss1 and kiss2 in the brain of yellowtail clownfish, Amphiprion clarkii.

Kisspeptin system was shown to be a key factor in mediating social stress and reproduction. Yellowtail clownfish, Amphiprion clarkii, is a hermaphrodite fish, whose sex determination and gonadal development are affected by the social status of individuals. The yellowtail clownfish is a fantastic animal model to explore sex determination, but the social status and precise distribution of kiss mRNAs in the brain of this species are unknown. Hererin, a novel in situ hybridization technique, RNAscope, was used to investigate the distribution of kiss1 and kiss2 expressions in the brain of yellowtai

Mapping and monitoring tick (Acari, Ixodida) distribution, seasonality, and host associations in the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2020.

Tick-borne disease risk is intrinsically linked to the distribution of tick vector species. To assess risk and anticipate disease emergence, an understanding of tick distribution, host associations, and seasonality is needed. This can be achieved, to some extent, using passive surveillance supported by engagement with the public, animal health, and public health experts. The Tick Surveillance Scheme (TSS) collects data and maps tick distribution across the United Kingdom (UK). Between 2017 and 2020, 3720 tick records were received and 39 tick species were detected. Most records were acquired i

Spatial Distribution of Trypanosomes in Cattle From Western Kenya.

African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is a tsetse-transmitted protozoan disease endemic in "the tsetse belt" of Africa. Past studies investigating the epidemiology of the disease rarely focused on spatial distribution when reporting the prevalence. The challenge of understanding the spatial epidemiology of the disease is further confounded by low-sensitive parasitological techniques used in field investigations. This study aimed to identify trypanosome species in cattle and their spatial distribution in western Kenya. Low-sensitive microscopic analysis and highly-sensitive polymerase chain reac

Fine-scale tissue distribution of cadmium, inorganic mercury, and methylmercury in nymphs of the burrowing mayfly Hexagenia rigida studied by whole-body autoradiography.

The distribution of inorganic 109Cd(II), inorganic 203Hg(II), and [203Hg] methylmercury (MeHg) in nymphs of the burrowing mayfly Hexagenia rigida after exposure via water and sediments was studied. To better understand the mechanisms underlying the fate of Cd, Hg, and MeHg in this animal and to identify target organs, autoradiography of whole-body cryosections was used to obtain a detailed view of the distribution of the radiolabels. The gut and exoskeleton were the only structures labeled in nymphs exposed to Cd via water or sediments. After exposure to inorganic Hg via water, the Malpighian

ADME, Pharmacokinetic Scaling, Pharmacodynamic and Prediction of Human Dose and Regimen of Novel Antiviral Drugs.

The search for new drugs is an extremely time-consuming and expensive endeavour. Much of that time and money go into generating predictive human pharmacokinetic profiles from preclinical efficacy and safety animal data. These pharmacokinetic profiles are used to prioritize or minimize the attrition at later stages of the drug discovery process. In the area of antiviral drug research, these pharmacokinetic profiles are equally important for the optimization, estimation of half-life, determination of effective dose, and dosing regimen, in humans. In this article we have highlighted three importa

A case of multiple cutaneous malignant lymphoma in reindeer, probably of immunologic-parasitic origin.

In a reindeer herd brought in for slaughter in February 1977 in Finnmark county, one animal about 11/2 years old, was found to have about 20 hairless nodules, each about 5 cm in diameter, in the skin. The nodules were of discoid shape and well demarcated, and made only slight impressions in the underlying muscles. They were found to be neoplasms, and should probably be classified as a malignant lymphoma of histiocytic type (Smith et al. 1972). Metastases were found in the prescapular lymph nodes. The animal was well-fed and without clinical signs of general disease. The distribution of the nod

Cytokine mRNA Expression Profile in Target Organs of IFNAR (-/-) Mice Infected with African Horse Sickness Virus.

African horse sickness (AHS) is a highly severe disease caused by a viral etiological agent, African horse sickness virus (AHSV). It is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, while sporadic outbreaks have occurred in North Africa, Asia, and Europe, with the most recent cases in Thailand. AHSV transmission between equines occurs primarily by biting midges of the genus Culicoides, especially C. imicola, with a wide distribution globally. As research in horses is highly restricted due to a variety of factors, small laboratory animal models that reproduce clinical signs and pathology observed in natural i

Cryptosporidium and waterborne outbreaks - A mini review.

Cryptosporidium spp. is one of the prime agents of infectious diarrhea. Cryptosporidium spp. has been gaining awareness as a pathogen of public health importance in India and other developing countries. Owing to the nature of multiple transmission routes such as person-to-person, animal-to-person, waterborne and foodborne, the epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis in humans is not well known. A deeper understanding of the pathogenesis may lead to better diagnosis and better treatment of the condition. Asymptomatic human and animal transmission illustrates that the spread of infection through the e

Test-Retest Repeatability of [18F]MC225-PET in Rodents: A Tracer for Imaging of P-gp Function.

In longitudinal PET studies, animals are repeatedly anesthetized which may affect the repeatability of PET measurements. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of anesthesia on the P-gp function as well as the reproducibility of [18F]MC225 PET scans. Thus, dynamic PET scans with blood sampling were conducted in 13 Wistar rats. Seven animals were exposed to isoflurane anesthesia 1 week before the PET scan ("Anesthesia-exposed" PET). A second group of six animals was used to evaluate the reproducibility of measurements of P-gp function at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) with [18F]MC225. In

Adenoviral delivery of recombinant DNA into transgenic mice bearing hepatocellular carcinomas.

To evaluate the applicability of recombinant adenoviral vectors in gene transfer to liver cancers, we infused the recombinant adenoviruses AD5CMV-LacZ and Ad5CMV-p53 through the portal veins into two lines of transgenic mice, one bearing the SV40 T antigen and the other the human hepatitis B viral envelope protein. These transgenic animals develop hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) with predictable pathological manifestations. The levels of expression of the transgenes were dependent upon the viral doses. In all cases, high levels of expression were detected within 2 or 3 days after infusion, but

Alterations in distribution of cardiac output in experimental diabetes in rats.

Alterations in blood flow distribution in streptozotocin-induced diabetes in the rat were examined. Blood flow between tissues was estimated by the distribution of radiolabeled microspheres, and a second series of experiments examined skeletal muscle microcirculation by in vivo microscopy. Studies were performed in anesthetized rats 1-8 wk after induction of diabetes. Cardiac index was transiently increased in diabetic animals (29.6 +/- 1.0 ml.min-1.100 g-1) in comparison with control animals (23.0 +/- 1.4 ml.min-1.100 g-1) at 2-wk duration. Cardiac index was similar in both groups of animals

Investigation of natural infection of BALB C mice by Bartonella henselae.

Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) animals are bred and maintained to exclude pathogens associated with significant morbidity or mortality, which may pose a risk to research replicability. The BALB/c strain is distributed globally and is among the most commonly used inbred strains in immunology and infectious disease research. Despite being a widely distributed bacterium that causes chronic infection, Bartonella henselae infection has not been investigated in any protocol that characterizes SPF animals. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential natural infection of laboratory anim

B.1.351 SARS-CoV-2 Variant Exhibits Higher Virulence but Less Viral Shedding than That of the Ancestral Strain in Young Nonhuman Primates.

We investigated the distribution, virulence, and pathogenic characteristics of mutated SARS-CoV-2 to clarify the association between virulence and the viral spreading ability of current and future circulating strains. Chinese rhesus macaques were infected with ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain GD108 and Beta variant B.1.351 (B.1.351) and assessed for clinical signs, viral distribution, pathological changes, and pulmonary inflammation. We found that GD108 replicated more efficiently in the upper respiratory tract, whereas B.1.351 replicated more efficiently in the lower respiratory tract and lung tis
