Ethics Education in Neonatology: Integrating Theory, Multimodal Methods, and AI Innovation.

This review examines current approaches to ethics education in neonatal-perinatal medicine (NPM), integrating adult learning theory, diverse teaching modalities, and emerging technologies to enhance training for neonatal clinicians. Foundational strategies include case-based discussions, simulation, interprofessional learning, and structured debriefing, which promote critical reflection, moral reasoning, and shared decision-making skills. Assessment of ethics education is challenging given the interplay of cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal domains. Tools such as knowledge tests, mileston

A New Look at Vaccination Behaviors and Intentions: The Case of Influenza.

Although viral outbreaks are increasing, vaccination rates are decreasing. Our aim was to explain this baffling behavior that seems to contradict rational self-interest, and, thus, be beyond the purview of rational choice theories. We integrated fuzzy-trace theory and major theoretical alternatives and applied them to influenza, testing theoretical predictions in two samples: young adults (who are major viral vectors), N = 722, and community members, N = 185. Controlling for prior knowledge and other psychosocial factors that influence vaccination, explained variance jumped significantly when

Why conspiracy theorists are not always paranoid: Conspiracy theories and paranoia form separate factors with distinct psychological predictors.

Paranoia and belief in conspiracy theories both involve suspiciousness about the intentions of others but have rarely been studied together. In three studies, one with a mainly student sample (N = 496) and two with more representative UK population samples (N = 1,519, N = 638) we compared single and two-factor models of paranoia and conspiracy theories as well as associations between both belief systems and other psychological constructs. A model with two correlated factors was the best fit in all studies. Both belief systems were associated with poor locus of control (belief in powerful other

Asperger through the looking glass: an exploratory study of self-understanding in people with Asperger's syndrome.

Hobson (Autism and the development of mind. Lawrence Erlbaum, Hove, UK 1993) has proposed that the cognitive and linguistic disabilities that characterise autism result from abnormalities in inter-subjective engagement during infancy, which in turn results in impaired reflective self-awareness. The aim of the present study was to test Hobson's hypothesis by examining self-understanding in Asperger's syndrome (AS) using Damon and Hart's (Self-understanding in childhood and adolescence. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1988) model of self-concept. Ten participants with Asperger's syndrome

Modulation of Frontoparietal Neurovascular Dynamics in Working Memory.

Our perception of the world is represented in widespread, overlapping, and interactive neuronal networks of the cerebral cortex. A majority of physiological studies on the subject have focused on oscillatory synchrony as the binding mechanism for representation and transmission of neural information. Little is known, however, about the stability of that synchrony during prolonged cognitive operations that span more than just a few seconds. The present research, in primates, investigated the dynamic patterns of oscillatory synchrony by two complementary recording methods, surface field potentia

Genetic and environmental influences on odor identification ability in the very old.

Odor identification ability and cognition were measured in a population-based cohort of 1,222 very old twins and singletons, including 91 centenarians. Heritability for identifying odors was low, in contrast to that for cognition. Common genes were found to contribute to both olfaction and cognition. In a multiple regression model, sex, age, cognitive function, and smoking, but not APOEε4 status, were significant predictors of the olfactory test scores (all ps < 0.001). This study, along with data from other studies, suggests that indices of heritability for odor identification decline with ag

From motor primitives to context-dependent coordination: a system neuroscience approach integrating cognitive, affective, and experiential factors into muscle synergy analysis.

Muscle synergies are traditionally viewed as stable, low-dimensional neuromuscular modules reflecting neural constraints. However, growing evidence suggests this mechanistic interpretation is incomplete. We propose a conceptual extension of the framework, arguing that coordination patterns reflected into multichannel EMG are emergent properties of an integrated cognitive-motor system rather than purely motor primitives. We identify three classes of non-motor factors that may shape motor output: (i) Task internalization and learning dynamics: synergy structure evolves with practice and the form

Preliminary evidence for normalization of risk taking by modafinil in chronic cocaine users.

Modafinil, a wake-promoting agent used to treat sleep disorders, is thought to enhance cognition. Although modafinil has shown promise as a pharmacotherapy for the treatment of cocaine dependence, it is unknown to what extent cognitive effects may play a role in such treatment. We examined the effect of modafinil on the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), a behavioral measure in which higher scores are purported to reflect a greater propensity for risk-taking. Thirty cocaine dependent individuals, enrolled in a randomized clinical trial of modafinil 400mg (n=12) versus placebo (n=18), were admi

The Cognitive Substrates of Action Fluency: A Multivariate Analysis in Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: Action fluency (AF), the rapid generation of verbs, has been proposed as a sensitive marker of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is unclear whether AF reflects domain-general executive-generative abilities or a disease-specific motor semantic deficit. This study examined the cognitive predictors of AF in individuals with PD without dementia (PD-ND). METHOD: Thirty-one older adults (14 PD-ND, 17 healthy controls) matched on age, sex, and education completed AF, letter fluency, semantic fluency, design fluency, processing speed, and global cognition tasks. Differences in Topography of Individual Amyloid Brain Networks by Amyloid PET Images in Healthy Control, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Alzheimer's Disease.

Amyloid plaques, implicated in Alzheimer's disease, exhibit a spatial propagation pattern through interconnected brain regions, suggesting network-driven dissemination. This study utilizes PET imaging to investigate these brain connections and introduces an innovative method for analyzing the amyloid network. A modified version of a previously established method is applied to explore distinctive patterns of connectivity alterations across cognitive performance domains. PET images illustrate differences in amyloid accumulation, complemented by quantitative network indices. The normal control gr

Altered limbic functional connectivity in individuals with subjective cognitive decline: Converging and diverging findings across Chinese and German cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: It remains unclear whether functional brain networks are consistently altered in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and whether the network alterations are associated with an amyloid burden. METHODS: Cross-sectional resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging connectivity (FC) and amyloid-positron emission tomography (PET) data from the Chinese Sino Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Decline and German DZNE Longitudinal Cognitive Impairment and Dementia cohorts were analyzed. RESULTS: Limbic FC, particularly hippo

Evaluation of Cognitive Function When Hearing One's Own Name in Patients With Brain Injuries in Early Developmental Stages.

PURPOSE: The level of residual cognitive function in patients with early brain injury is a key factor limiting rehabilitation and the quality of life. Although understanding residual function is necessary for appropriate rehabilitation, the extent of its effects on cognitive improvement remains unknown. This study evaluated cognitive function in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities after early brain injuries due to cerebral hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia. We focused on neural responses to hearing the subject's own name (SON). According to previous studies, diffe

CSF biomarkers of neurotoxicity in childhood cancer survivors after cranial radiotherapy or surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of pediatric brain tumors is associated with potential long-term cognitive sequelae. Patients treated with craniospinal irradiation for posterior fossa tumors are at high risk. New biomarkers that could help to differentiate treatment effects from other causes of cognitive dysfunction would be valuable in tailoring optimal survivorship care. Biomarkers that reflect biological mechanisms behind treatment-associated cognitive decline would also be important in the evaluation of future treatment regimens for pediatric brain or skull base tumors. METHODS: In this biomarker-fi

Neural correlates of executive dysfunction in alcohol use disorder: preliminary evidence from 18F-FDG-PET.

Neuroimaging studies have shown that cognitive impairments in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), particularly involving executive functions, reflect widespread structural and functional brain alterations. However, these findings mostly result from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To complement previous MRI findings with a more direct measure of brain metabolism, we therefore explored the neural bases of executive impairments in AUD using FDG-PET. Twenty-three AUD patients and 18 healthy controls underwent a neurocognitive assessment, and patients also an 18F-FDG-PET scan. Using as reference for brai

Plasma microRNA predict cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disease, is currently diagnosed clinically by impairments in motor control. PD, however, includes a diversity of non-motor symptoms, such as cognitive decline. Thus, it is imperative to establish a diagnostic framework for PD which reflects this heterogeneous phenotype. While misfolded α-synuclein is a cellular hallmark of PD and candidate biofluid marker, microRNA are an important class of biomarkers that are stable and easily detectable in blood, and are dysregulated at post-mortem in PD patients. This study aimed

Dopamine depletion and subcortical dysfunction disrupt cortical synchronization and metastability affecting cognitive function in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily characterized by the loss of dopaminergic cells and atrophy in subcortical regions. However, the impact of these pathological changes on large-scale dynamic integration and segregation of the cortex are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the effect of subcortical dysfunction on cortical dynamics and cognition in PD. Spatiotemporal dynamics of the phase interactions of resting-state blood-oxygen-level-dependent signals in 159 PD patients and 152 normal control (NC) individuals were estimated. The relationships between subcortical atrophy, s

Enhancing the Clinical Utility of DriveSafe DriveAware for People with Huntington's Disease.

DriveSafe DriveAware (DSDA) is a cognitive screening tool assessing driving safety. Previously, we found DSDA categorised some HD participants as 'likely to pass' on-road assessments, despite displaying cognitive impairments in domains known to impact driving. As processing speed is affected early in HD, we examined whether DSDA completion time could provide supplementary cognitive information to support clinical decision-making. The HD group completed subtests significantly slower than controls, and completion times correlated with cognitive functions essential for driving. Considering DSDA c

Cerebellum: connections and functions.

In addition to its role in motor control, reflex adaptation, and motor learning, three sorts of evidence have been put forward to support the idea that the cerebellum may also be involved in cognition. Patients with cerebellar lesions are reported to have deficits in performing one or another cognitive task. The cerebellum is often seen to be activated when normal subjects perform such tasks. There are connections to and from areas of the prefrontal cortex that may be involved in cognition. In this paper, we review the anatomical evidence to support the claim. We suggest that there are only mi

Adaptive and maladaptive components of rumination? Diagnostic specificity and relation to depressive biases.

The present study investigated the validity of the two-factor solution of items selected from the Rumination Scale of the Response Style Questionnaire proposed by Treynor, Gonzalez, and Nolen-Hoeksema (2003). In the first part of this study we used samples of currently depressed (MDD), formerly depressed (FD), socially anxious (SP), and healthy control participants to examine whether the brooding and reflective pondering components differentiate participants with an anxiety disorder from participants with depression. In the second part of this study we examined whether these components of rumi
