Simultaneous bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fracture in an adolescent: a case report.

Bilateral simultaneous avulsion fractures of the anterior tibial tubercle (ATT) are extremely rare. Since the first description in 1954, 15 similar cases have been reported. We report a further case in a 16-year-old boy who sustained simultaneous bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fractures (Watson-Jones Type III) from jumping during a gymnastics session. The right knee presented an associated partial avulsion of the patellar tendon. Both knees were treated successfully by open reduction and internal fixation with two cannulated screws. The recovery of the patient was complete; the screws were

[Trends of physical development and adaptation to the study load and health-improving sports activities in elementary schoolchildren of Moscow].

UNLABELLED: The inclusion of 7-10-year-old children in the school system occurs in the context of the interaction of two processes: activation of ontogenesis at this stage of age development and stimulation of biological and psychological adaptation of younger schoolchildren to the learning activity. The main factors negatively affecting the health of elementary school students are the following: hypokinesia, mental and psycho-emotional stress related to computer and digital learning technologies, prolonged stay in closed rooms of the educational institution rather than in the natural environm

Postural instability after lumbar spinal surgery: are there any predictive factors? A case control study.

BackgroundThe surgical spinal degenerative pathology mainly concerns the herniated intervertebral disks. Surgery is indicated when the pain becomes chronic and intense, and when motor signs appear. The results are positive in about 90% of cases, leading to the solution of the problem. However, an estimated percentage of 4% to 20% reported residual pain and postural instability after the surgical treatment of discectomy.MethodWe have examined a sample of patients, retrospectively registered, undergoing surgical treatment for degenerative lumbar disease. Some of them developed postural instabili

Imaging Traumatic Wrist and Hand Injuries in Children.

The pediatric wrist and hand are anatomically and functionally complex regions that undergo continuous changes throughout growth and maturation. This review opens with a discussion of normal skeletal development, emphasizing typical patterns of ossification and growth plate maturation in the distal forearm, carpus, and phalanges. Physeal anatomy is explained, followed by a review of acute physeal injuries (such as Salter-Harris fractures), and common nonphyseal fractures including buckle, incomplete, and complete fractures. Finally, repetitive stress injuries affecting the distal radius of gym

Bone mass during growth: the effects of exercise. Exercise and mineral accrual.

Intense exercise during childhood and adolescence may result in primary amenorrhea and low peak bone mineral density (BMD). After puberty, exercise may result in secondary amenorrhea and bone loss. Higher BMD in amenorrheic athletes than amenorrheic sedentary persons suggests that exercise may partly offsets the effects of amenorrhea. To examine this possibility, we measured BMD (g/cm2) by dual x-ray absorptiometry in 32 ballet dancer and 23 healthy controls of comparable age with regular menstrual cycles, 34 pre-pubertal female gymnasts bone age 8.9 +/- 0.2 years and 37 girls matched by bone

[Clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of facial nerve lesions in the practical work of otorhinolaryngologyst].

Surgical treatment of persistent facial nerve lesions is currently the sole efficacious method for restoration of the voluntary locomotary function of mimetic muscles. Treatment of facial nerve neuropathy of otogenic nature requires a combined approach with surgical revision of the middle ear as its indispensable component including examination of the intrapetrous segment of the facial nerve canal. Facial nerve conductivity and controllable locomotary function of mimetic muscles are possible to restore by anastomosing this nerve with another (donor) one at the earliest possible stages of pares

Eating disorders among athletes. Research and recommendations.

Research indicates that certain athletes, particularly those in sports that emphasize leanness to enhance performance or appearance (e.g., gymnastics, wrestling, figure skating, diving, and ballet), are at risk for eating disorders. Little is known about the risk for eating disorder symptoms in weight and strength training. It is concluded that, even when mild variants of eating disorders are observed in athletes, they should be given immediate attention because they may severely compromise health and performance. Practical recommendations are made for coaches and trainers to identify the phys

[The influence of sports injuries on sport participation and work].

The incidence and complications of sport injuries in athletics, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis and soccer were analysed from questionnaire responses of 239 sport participants in Pretoria. Lower limb injuries were most common (73%). Torn tendomuscular organs represented 29,3% of the total number of injuries; sprains, strains and dislocations 35,9%; and fractures 20,5%. Medical treatment was sought by 62,8% of the patients. A total of 60,7% of the subjects was advised to suspend further participation in sport, but 30,6% failed to do so and more than half of these again

A rare cause of lateral ankle pain: A symptomatic talus secundarius.

The talus secundarius is one of the rarest accessory tarsal bones, being present in 0.01% of all ankles. It is located at the lateral side of the talus, distally to the tip of the fibula. Hitherto, only five cases of a symptomatic talus secundarius have been described in literature. We presented a case of bilateral symptomatic talus secundarius in a young gymnast. There was a difference in size of the two accessory bones. The large talus secundarius in the left ankle was fixated, in the right ankle the fragment was excised. Both excision and fixation in the presented patient led to satisfactor

Conditions of the toenails.

Athletes are susceptible to developing toenail problems because of the speed or intensity of play (runners), the starting and stopping nature of the sport (tennis, racquetball), and the type of activity and shoes they wear or do not wear (ballet dancers, gymnasts). They may also have other conditions, such as hallux valgus, claw toes, gout, diabetes, arthritis, or fungus infection of the nails, that may influence the decision on the type of treatment recommended. Nail trauma that could result in osteomyelitis; secondary effects of arthritis, such as the development of a mucous cyst; and the in

Peroneal tendons subluxation.

Subluxation of the peroneal tendons is uncommon. It occurs especially in skiing, soccer, basketball, rugby, ice skating, judo, sprint, water-skiing, mountaineering, and gymnastics. We present an overview of the injury, with the classification commonly used. Many surgical techniques have been described to manage recurrent subluxation of the peroneal tendons, but only Level IV/Grade C evidence has been produced. Thus, randomized controlled trials are necessary to determinate the best surgical management method. It appears that high-demand individuals should be primarily managed surgically, and r

Osteochondrosis dissecans of the elbow.

This case shows a typical presentation of an osteochondrosis dissecans lesion on the capitellum, with associated intra-articular loose bodie(s), diagnosed on plain film. Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is a rather common entity. Mostly the knee joint is involved. Only 5% of OCD lesions occur in the elbow joint. Possible causes of osteochondrosis dissecans include (repetitive) trauma (e.g. in throwing sports or gymnastics), ischemia, ossification defects, and genetic factors. Conventional radiography mostly has a low sensitivity to detect OCD lesions, and is often normal in early stages. CT is

Osteochondral autograft transplantation for osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum in nonthrowing athletes.

In this report, we present the cases of 3 nonthrowing athletes with osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum. Preoperatively, they complained of elbow pain during rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis, and basketball, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a completely separated osteochondral fragment or a full-thickness cartilage defect. All 3 patients were treated with transplantation of an osteochondral autograft harvested from the lateral femoral condyle. They returned fully to their sports activities within 6 months of surgery. The continuity of the cartilage layer between the ost

The Female Athlete Triad.

In brief The female athlete triad of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis affects women and girls in many sports, but the messages conveyed to those in "appearance" sports like gymnastics may play a role. Because the triad may result in irreversible bone loss and death, early detection is imperative. Friends, parents, coaches, and physicians can be alert to behaviors like eating alone, trips to the bathroom during or after meals, and the use of laxatives. Other signs and symptoms of the female athlete triad may include fatigue, anemia, depression, cold intolerance, lanugo, and erode

[Physical rehabilitation for degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the hip joint in elderly and senile people (3rd stage).].

Despite the numerous non-drug treatment options, a clear strategy for medical rehabilitation of patients with hip osteoarthritis has not been developed. Long-term physical inactivity associated with exacerbation of the disease, with limb immobilization due to injury or joint surgery leads to the development of secondary changes: muscle atrophy, contractures, osteoporosis and other changes in the tissues of the musculoskeletal system, which significantly complicate the restoration of motor function. The aim of the work is to evaluate the effectiveness of a modernized method of therapeutic exerc

Surgical Repair of Complete Plantar Fascia Ruptures in High-Demand Power Athletes: An Alternative Treatment Option.

Surgical repair of complete plantar fascia ruptures has not yet been reported in the literature. Operative technique and outcome are described in 2 gymnasts with heavy plyometric demands who received surgical repair compared with 3 athletes treated nonoperatively. Biomechanics and clinical implications are discussed. In the last 8 years, we have seen 5 high-demand athletes with total rupture of the plantar fascia. This is a retrospective clinical evaluation 1.5 to 8 years postinjury of all 5 patients using dynamic ultrasound, Foot Function Index, sports-specific questions, Foot Posture Index,
