Three-dimensional evaluation of dental characteristics in patients with Cleidocranial dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder. Besides skeletal abnormalities, CCD is often associated with dental complications, such as multiple supernumerary teeth and permanent teeth impaction or delayed eruption. METHODS: Supernumerary teeth of axial, sagittal and coronal CBCT view was characterized in detail and 3D image reconstruction was performed. Number and location of teeth, morphology of supernumerary teeth, positional relationship between supernumerary and adjacent permanent teeth, direction of supernumerary teeth in CCD patients were anal

Root canal length determination by different methods in primary teeth: an in vivo study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the accuracy of root canal lengths (RCLs) in primary teeth using different clinical methods. METHODS: RCLs of 70 extracted human primary single-rooted teeth were estimated in vivo by a calibrated investigator using the electronic apex locator (EAL) method, radiovisiography (RVG), conventional radiography (X-ray), and tactile sensation method (TSM). The teeth were categorized into Group 1 (G1; teeth without physiological root resorption [PRR]); Group 2 (G2; teeth with one-fourth apical PRR); and Group 3 (G3; teeth with one-fourth to three-fourths lingual PRR).

An examination of proportional root lengths of the mandibular canine and premolars near the time of eruption.

INTRODUCTION: To make treatments more efficient, orthodontists require a more precise means of estimating tooth eruption. The purpose of this article was to extend the information derived from dental staging techniques by incorporating direct measurements of root lengths for 3 mandibular teeth: the canine and the 2 premolars. METHODS: The full sample consists of 227 panoramic films from 77 female patients and 229 films from 74 male patients treated at a practice in Texas. A subsample of paired preeruption and posteruption films was examined in greater detail (46 subjects for the canine, 42 fo

Reproducibility and accuracy of measuring unerupted teeth using limited cone beam X-ray CT.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the reproducibility among observers and accuracy of the measurement of the tooth crown width of unerupted teeth using limited area cone beam X-ray CT. METHODS: 3DX multi-image micro-CT (3DX, Morita Co., Kyoto, Japan) images of impacted supernumerary teeth in the median maxillary region taken prior to extraction were used for the samples. The width of the tooth on the 3DX image was measured five times by five individual observers. Significant differences in values among the observers in the measurement were determined by one-way ana

Developmental changes of mandibular permanent canines and premolars in early mixed dentition.

This study investigated the developmental changes of mandibular permanent canines and premolars in early mixed dentition using panoramic radiographs. Positions of cusps and root apices of the teeth relative to the inferior border of mandible were evaluated. The developmental stages of the teeth were divided into three stages. There were few changes in the inclination of the three teeth. The permanent canine began to erupt before stage 2 and the second premolar began to erupt after stage 2. The distance between the inferior border of the mandible and apices of the three teeth was almost fixed i

An evaluation of root resorption incident to orthodontic intrusion.

A new radiographic method was developed for measuring changes in root length. With this technique, orthodontic intrusion was investigated as a potential cause of apical root resorption of maxillary incisors. The experimental group consisted of 17 patients with excessive overbite who were treated with a Burstone-type intrusion arch, which delivered a low level of force (about 15 gm per tooth). A control group was made up of 17 patients in full-arch fixed appliances who were randomly selected. After a period of approximately 4 months, the intrusion group had only slightly more root resorption th

The palatal canine and the adjacent lateral incisor: a study of a west of Scotland population.

The hypothesis that palatally-displaced canines are associated with smaller than average lateral incisors or with congenital absence of adjacent lateral incisors was tested on a West of Scotland population. A retrospective study of the records of orthodontic patients attending Glasgow Dental Hospital was carried out. One-hundred-and-eighty-two subjects with palatally displaced canines were identified. The tooth length of lateral and central incisors was measured on radiographs and the crown widths of lateral incisors were measured on study casts. One-hundred-and-six extracted maxillary lateral

Abnormal tooth size and morphology in subjects with cleft lip and/or palate in the north of England.

The aim of this study was to investigate tooth size and morphology in subjects with unilateral cleft palate (UCLP), bilateral cleft palate (BCLP), and isolated cleft palate (ICP) living in the north of England and to compare these with a control group. The measurements were undertaken retrospectively using dental study casts. To assess tooth size, the mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions of each fully erupted permanent tooth were measured using digital Vernier callipers. The following morphological features of the teeth were assessed: upper incisor shovelling and crown form, the presence of

Three-dimensional changes in the position of unopposed molars in adults.

The aim of this study was to longitudinally examine, in adults, changes of position in the three dimensions of maxillary molars unopposed for more than 10 years. Twelve healthy mature adults (six males, six females; mean age 45 years 11 months) with unopposed molars were followed-up for a mean period of 10 years 7 months. Plaster casts were made at the first and last examination. The patients presented 22 unopposed maxillary molars at both recordings and 14 posterior teeth with antagonists, at least one in each subject, without significant modifications during the study period. Mandibular incisor extraction: indications and long-term evaluation.

The extraction of a lower incisor constitutes a therapeutic alternative limited to certain occlusal situations, i.e. supernumerary incisors, tooth size anomalies (peg-shaped upper laterals), ectopic eruption and anterior crossbites. The effect of the extraction of a single incisor on the out of retention alignment of lower anterior teeth was studied in 26 treated cases. Initial (T1), final (T2) and 5-8 years out of retention (T3) dental casts were measured. Mean crowding at the start of treatment (T1 = 3.86 mm) relapsed out of retention (T3 = 1.49 mm), with a net mean improvement of 2.37 mm. L

Dynamics of tissue changes found after mechanical loading of the rat incisor. I. A three-dimensional longitudinal study of the morphologic aspects.

A three-dimensional morphometric method was used to evaluate progressive changes in shape and size of recovering dental and periodontal tissues after orthodontic loading. In 35 female rats weighing 212 +/- 4 gm, loads of 19.7 +/- 1.6 gm generated by closed-coil springs were applied for 2 weeks to the shortened lower left incisor. The rats were killed in groups of five at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 10 weeks (groups 0-w to 10-w) after the springs were removed. A group of rats with normal incisors (group C-1) and one with five incisors that had been continually shortened for 10 weeks (group C-2) serve

Dental variation among populations. An anthropologic view.

There is considerable variation between and within populations with regard to tooth size, age of eruption, congenitally missing teeth, and crown morphology. These differences are a reflection of the ongoing process of evolution. The genetic basis for this variation is best explained by a polygenic model of inheritance. Even though tooth morpholoyg and agenesis have discontinuous distributions - usually evidence of single gene transmission - they are also polygenic traits and are examples of "quasi-continuous" characteristics. These are traits which exhibit phenotypic discontinuity at the end o

Development of a new in vitro methodology to simulate internal root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: Studies to evaluate the diagnostic power of imaging examinations to detect root resorption have been based on simulations produced by burs. Standardized, round, and well-outlined access cavities do not reproduce the characteristics of physiological lesions and may facilitate diagnosis, masking the true accuracy of imaging techniques. A methodology to simulate internal root resorption by using acid demineralization was developed. METHODS: Eleven extracted single-rooted teeth were mesiodistally sectioned into homologous halves. Root canals were labeled to ensure restricted and con

Excessive gingival display--etiology, diagnosis, and treatment modalities.

Extensive exposure of the gingiva during a smile, called excessive gingival display, may be a point of concern for both patients and clinicians. Patients often present to the dental clinic seeking a solution to their "gummy" appearance. A clinician must fully understand the various factors involved in this situation, to provide patients with an appropriate answer. Thorough examination followed by the right diagnosis is imperative for achieving an esthetic and predictable result in the treatment of such situations. The aim of this article is to discuss the various aspects of excessive gingival
