Pregnancy experiences of transgender and gender-expansive individuals: A systematic scoping review from a critical midwifery perspective.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that transgender and gender-expansive people are more likely to have suboptimal pregnancy outcomes compared with cisgender people. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the role of midwifery in these inequities by analyzing the pregnancy experiences of transgender and gender-expansive people from a critical midwifery perspective. METHODS: We conducted a systematic scoping review. We included 15 papers published since 2010 that reported on pregnancy experiences of people who had experienced gestational pregnancy at least once, and were transg

Gatekeepers of Extermination: SS Camp Physicians and Their Scope of Action.

The role of camp physicians of the Waffen-SS ("Armed SS," military branch of the Nazi Party's Schutzstaffel) in the implementation of the Holocaust has been the subject of limited research, even though they occupied a key position in the extermination process. From 1943 and 1944 onward, SS camp physicians made the individual medical decisions on whether each prisoner was fit for work or was immediately subjected to extermination, not only at the Auschwitz labor and extermination camp but also in pure labor camps like Buchenwald and Dachau. This was due to a functional change in the concentrati

Investing in Community Care Is an Important Goal and Need for Eliminating Hepatitis C in the United States: An Abolitionist Perspective.

Recent nationwide racial justice uprisings following ongoing police violence against Black communities juxtaposed with the COVID-19 pandemic have increased the urgency for a reckoning around the ineffectiveness and harm caused by the carceral apparatus. It is well documented that the correctional system was founded upon and continues the legacy of slavery and white supremacy. Research has shown that incarceration directly contributes to many negative health outcomes, including increased risk and spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, especially among people who inject drugs. This high b

Associations between Experiences of Police Contact and Discrimination by the Police and Courts and Health Outcomes in a Representative Sample of Adults in New York City.

Communities marginalized because of racism, heterosexism, and other systems of oppression have a history of being aggressively policed, and in those contexts, researchers have observed associations between a range of negative experiences with police and poor physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. However, past studies have been limited in that experiences of police contacts were aggregated at the neighborhood level and, if police contacts were self-reported, the sample was not representative. To address these limitations, we employed NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene 2017

How the war on drugs impacts social determinants of health beyond the criminal legal system.

There is a growing recognition in the fields of public health and medicine that social determinants of health (SDOH) play a key role in driving health inequities and disparities among various groups, such that a focus upon individual-level medical interventions will have limited effects without the consideration of the macro-level factors that dictate how effectively individuals can manage their health. While the health impacts of mass incarceration have been explored, less attention has been paid to how the "war on drugs" in the United States exacerbates many of the factors that negatively im

Experienced and Anticipated Intersectional Violence and Psychological Distress Symptom Severity Among Black Transgender Women in the United States of America.

BACKGROUND: Black transgender women experience disproportionately high rates of violent victimization rooted in intersecting systems of oppression, including cisgenderism and anti-Black racism. Although victimization is linked to psychological distress, the mental health impacts of intersectional violence, which targets overlapping marginalized identities, remain understudied. OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations between anticipated and experienced intersectional victimization and psychological distress among Black transgender women. METHODS: Online survey data from 151 Black transgender

A 36-year-old African American male with sickle cell disease (SCD), osteomyelitis, major depressive disorder (MDD), and alcohol use disorder presented with active suicidal ideation following a suicide attempt via increasing alcohol consumption. Diagnostic evaluation suggested MDD. Within the hospitalization, he was also diagnosed with comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder. Pharmacologic treatment was initiated with sertraline titrated to 150 mg daily, and his pain was managed with buprenorphine-naloxone 1 mg twice daily, meloxicam 15 mg daily, and acetaminophen 650 mg every 6 h as needed. Child Health and the US Pediatric Subspecialty Workforce: Planning for the Future.

This article opens a multi-article Pediatrics supplement that provides a rigorous analysis of the projected pediatric subspecialty workforce in the United States. Congenital variations, epigenetics, exposures, lifestyle, preventive care, and medical interventions from conception through young adulthood set the stage for health and wellbeing in adulthood. Although care provided by pediatric subspecialists is associated with better outcomes and lower costs compared with adult providers, the authors of recent articles in the lay and medical literature have questioned the capacity of pediatric sub

Application of a Heuristic Framework for Multilevel Interventions to Eliminate the Impact of Unjust Social Processes and Other Harmful Social Determinants of Health.

There is consensus about the importance of developing a strong cadre of effective multilevel interventions to eliminate the impacts of unjust social processes, such as structural racism and other harmful social determinants of health (SDOH), on health inequities in the USA. However, the available cadre of rigorously evaluated evidence-based interventions for SDOH mitigation remains underdeveloped relative to the magnitude of historic and current health inequities. The proposed manuscript addresses this gap in two ways: first, by introducing a heuristic framework to inform decisions in multilev

The competing effects of racial discrimination and racial identity on the predicted number of days incarcerated in the US: A national profile of Black, Latino/Latina, and American Indian/Alaska Native populations.

OBJECTIVE: Racial discrimination and racial identity may compete to influence incarceration risk. We estimated the predicted days incarcerated in a national US sample of Black, Latino/Latina, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals. METHODS: We used the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 14,728) to identify individual incarceration history. We used zero-inflated Poisson regression to predict the number of days incarcerated across racial discrimination and racial identity scores. RESULTS: Racial discrimination and identity varied b

Pushing for health equity through structural competency and implicit bias education: A qualitative evaluation of a racial/ethnic health disparities elective course for pharmacy learners.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Health equity attainment requires dismantling implicit bias and structural racism. Mitigating bias in clinical interventions and implementing structural interventions to impact where people live, work, play, and eat fosters optimal patient outcomes. Consequently, pharmacy students need exposure to these concepts. The objective of this project was to evaluate an elective course focused on exposing students to the root causes of health disparities, contemporary factors that perpetuate disparities, and evidence-based policies to reduce health disparities. [Racial discrimination against employees in German rehabilitation centres: A survey of managers, quality managers and complaints managers].

PURPOSE: Racial discrimination directed at employees can significantly affect their well-being, job satisfaction, and professional development. In the German healthcare system, there is a lack of systematic research on the experiences of staff members who are affected by racism, particularly in rehabilitation facilities, where collaboration among staff and patients poses social challenges. This study aims to examine the extent and nature of such experiences and to assess existing complaint and prevention structures. METHODS: Between October and November 2024, 1,322 inpatient rehabilitation fa

Racial disparities in youth pretrial detention: a retrospective cohort study grounded in critical race theory.

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: Pretrial detention makes up 75% of juvenile detention admissions and contributes to the disproportionate contact of minoritized youth in the juvenile carceral system. Given that prior evidence largely examines differences between Black and white youth, this study expands research on disproportionate contact in the pretrial detention setting to Hispanic/Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian youth. With a sample of over 44,000 juvenile cases in a northwest state, we used a generalized linear mixed model to estimate the effect of individual level characteristics while accounting fo

Slow Harm After Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization: An Analytic Scoping Review of How Data and Surveillance Infrastructures Reshape Emergency Obstetric Care.

Following Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization on June 24, 2022, abortion criminalization in the United States has converged with interoperable health data systems, making reproductive health documentation more portable and legally legible across jurisdictions. This analytic scoping review, guided by Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), examined U.S. literature published from June 2022 through October 2025 in PubMed, OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and HeinOnline. Effective healthcare coverage in Canada: The caring and responding in Edmonton project.

BACKGROUND: Despite the progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Canada, individuals experiencing socioeconomic disadvantages continue to face barriers to accessing necessary health services. This study explored the observational insights of social care providers (SCPs), who regularly engage with vulnerable populations and healthcare systems, to better understand these barriers in Edmonton, Canada. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was employed, guided by COREQ criteria. Purposive sampling recruited SCPs from 22 community organizations serving Indigenous community members a

Nonrandom Missingness in Child Race and Ethnicity Records and the US Federal Data Standards: Pooled Analysis of Community-Based Child Health Studies.

BACKGROUND: Racism perpetuates the unequal distribution of power, resources, and privilege within and between societies to the detriment of marginalized groups. Racialization involves categorizing people based on traits to which socially constructed meaning and value have been ascribed. In public health, this process can manifest when tracking racial health disparities in children, which requires aggregating parent-reported race and ethnicity data into federally recognized categories. The demographic surveys used to characterize children's identity in the United States mirror those administere

The health status of incarcerated people in Canada: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: People who experience incarceration in Canada have been historically more likely to experience poor health than community-based populations. Although incarcerated people are entitled to health care equivalent to community standards, evidence suggests this is inconsistently achieved in Canada. We conducted a narrative review to synthesize contemporary evidence on health status and health care utilization by incarcerated people in Canada, including changes observed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for

"When You Look at This Chart, That Is Not My Whole Life": Caregiver Perspectives to Inform Improved Primary Care Practice and Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Worsening rates of infant and maternal mortality in the United States serve as an urgent call for multi-modal intervention. Infant Well Child Visits (WCVs) provide an opportunity for prevention, however not all infants receive the recommended schedule of visits, with infants of low-income and Black families missing a higher portion of WCVs. Due to diverse experiences and needs of under-resourced communities throughout the United States, caregiver voice is essential when designing improvement efforts. Caring, pragmatic and discriminatory: how private paediatric outpatient providers normalise unequal care for Roma-ethnographic findings from affluent Slovakia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare providers may enact discriminatory practices while perceiving themselves as caring and pragmatic. Whilst anti-Roma discrimination in Central and Eastern European healthcare has been documented in hospital and emergency settings in poorer regions, less is known about routine outpatient care in affluent areas. This ethnographic study examines how private paediatric outpatient providers in Slovakia’s most affluent region normalise unequal care for Roma families through everyday practices rationalised as contextually appropriate responses. METHODS: The study was conducted be
