Candida dubliniensis: an emerging opportunistic pathogen.

The incidence of opportunistic fungal infections continues to increase, partly as a result of the continuing AIDS epidemic. Candida albicans remains the most important fungal pathogen and is frequently associated with oral candidiasis in HIV-infected individuals. Over the past decade, however, there has been an increasing number of reports implicating other Candida species, such as C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and C. krusei, in disease in these patients and in other patient groups. During the same period there have also been frequent reports in the literature describing what have generally been

Treatment of fungal infection in AIDS.

Fungal infections affect virtually all patients with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Superficial infection (seborrheic dermatitis, tinea capitis, tinea corporis and tinea cruris) is more common than in the general population and can be difficult to eradicate. Mucosal disease (oropharyngeal, oesophageal and vaginal candidosis) is very common and often recurs. In advanced AIDS, patients usually fail to respond to topical therapy and often to systemic therapy and isolates of Candida spp. from these patients are frequently resistant in vitro to fluconazole and other azoles. Systemic

Prophylaxis of opportunistic infections in patients with HIV infection.

Prophylaxis of opportunistic infections in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been one of the major factors responsible for increasing patient survival. Secondary prophylaxis of most opportunistic infections is warranted, although in most instances the optimal therapy remains to be determined. Primary prophylaxis of opportunistic infections is an attractive concept, as the majority of opportunistic infections are reactivations of latent infections. Primary prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is both effective and necessary, but the role for primary pr

Tuberculosis: a personal commentary.

Tuberculosis is another of those diseases from which our attention has been diverted in recent decades, and which may now come back to plague us. I refer to the timely warning in Dr Frankel's report and Dr Reppun's editorial comment in the Hawaii Medical Journal of December 1991.

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel non-nucleoside HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors with broad-spectrum chemotherapeutic properties.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) results from infection by the retrovirus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the most significant risk factor for many opportunistic infections like tuberculosis, hepatitis, bacterial infections, etc. In this paper, we designed aminopyrimidinimino isatin lead compound as a novel non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor with broad-spectrum chemotherapeutic properties for the effective treatment of AIDS and AIDS-related opportunistic infections. Compound 1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7[[N(4)-[3'-(4'-amino-5'-trimethoxybenzylpyrimidin-2

[Clinical manifestations of acquired immunologic deficiency syndrome (AIDS)].

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS is caused by the retrovirus HIV. About 20% develop after the inoculation of the virus an acute clinical picture resembling infectious mononucleosis. Several weeks to months after the infection antibodies can be demonstrated in the serum. Lateron a lymphadenopathy syndrome or AIDS related complex may develop. Most of the patients with LAS or ARC will progress to the full blown picture of AIDS. This is defined as immunodeficiency complicated by Kaposi-sarcoma or central nervous system malignance lymphoma or opportunistic infections. The most common inf

Progressive Worsening of Neurological Manifestations in HIV-Associated Opportunistic Central Nervous System (CNS) Infection Patients After COVID-19 Vaccinations: A Possible Co-Incidence Causality.

BACKGROUND The iceberg phenomenon (in which the most of a problem is invisible) of people living with HIV/AIDS, particularly those with unknown HIV status, has been epidemiologically challenging. Central nervous system (CNS) opportunistic infections in patients with HIV/AIDS are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV/AIDS. There are currently limited data on the immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in people living with HIV/AIDS with its associated opportunistic CNS infections as well as those without antiretroviral treatment. [A very up-to-date stage in the fate of infectious diseases: parasitic and fungal opportunistic infections].

Opportunistic parasitosis and mycosis are becoming ever more widespread, mainly under the influence of major immunodeficiencies, either acquired (AIDS) or therapeutic. In this general overview, their main aspects, both clinical and epidemiological, are underlined. In terms of epidemiology, three types of phenomena have been observed: 1) emergence of human parasitosis unknown before (microsporidiosis due to Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Encephalitozoom hellem or Septata intestinalis); 2) among the human parasites already known, identification of very pathogenic strains (Toxoplasma gondii, Aspergillu

Medicinal plants used by traditional medicine practitioners for the treatment of HIV/AIDS and related conditions in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: In Uganda, there are over one million people with HIV/AIDS. When advanced, this disease is characterized by life-threatening opportunistic infections. As the formal health sector struggles to confront this epidemic, new medicines from traditional sources are needed to complement control efforts. This study was conducted to document herbal medicines used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and related opportunistic infections, and to document the existing knowledge, attitudes and practices related to HIV/AIDS recognition, control and treatment in Sembabule, Kamuli, Kabale

Co-occurrence of cytomegalovirus-induced vanishing bile duct syndrome with papillary stenosis in HIV infection.

Jaundice in patients with AIDS can be a result of diverse conditions ranging from opportunistic infections to drug-related hepatotoxicity. With the advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART), the prevalence of AIDS cholangiopathy as a cause of jaundice has decreased; on the other hand, ART-related hepatotoxicity has become one of the commonest causes of jaundice in these patients. AIDS cholangiopathy is a rare condition of extrahepatic biliary obstruction in patients with advanced HIV infection, usually due to opportunistic infections. Vanishing bile duct syndrome (VBDS) is an acquired disorder ch

Substance-use Disorders, Opportunistic Infections, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Patients.

The excessive use of a drug that is harmful to the person as well as society at large is referred to as substance addiction or abuse. Some substances and risky and unsafe sexual behavior have been linked to an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. These frequently used substances include tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, crack cocaine, and opiates. More than 50% of HIV patients were found to use alcohol, compared to 5-15% for cocaine.1 Marijuana, too, is prevalent in HIV patients. People with HIV smoke twice as much tobacco as the general population.1.

Magnitude of Opportunistic Infections and Associated Factors Among HIV-Positive Adults on ART at Selected Public Hospitals in Sidama National Regional State, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic infections are late complications of HIV infection due to the depletion of the immune system. It is a major public health problem and high morbidity AIDS patients die of AIDS-related infections in developing countries like Ethiopia. Identification of opportunistic infections (OIs) is important to develop a specific intervention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the burden and associated factors of opportunistic infections. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 420 randomly selected HIV/AIDS patients taking anti-retroviral ther

Hepatobiliary and pancreatic infections in AIDS: Part II.

In the first part of our review, we discussed the general evaluation and clinical presentation of the various hepatic infections occurring in patients with AIDS. In addition, we focused on specific hepatic parenchymal infections. In this article, we will discuss the major clinical syndromes arising from opportunistic infections affecting the gallbladder (acalculous cholecystitis), biliary tree (AIDS-cholangiopathy), and pancreas (pancreatitis). Acalculous cholecystitis can develop in patients with AIDS who have not experienced the severe precipitating physiologic stresses normally required in

Human Immunodeficiency Virus: Opportunistic Infections and Beyond.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection causes substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has changed the epidemiology of HIV in the last 20 years with increased survival and decreasing incidence of opportunistic infections (OI), CNS OI remain a major cause of morbidity. Improved survival has also increased neurological presentations due to co morbid conditions, treatment related side effects and inflammatory syndromes. Being familiar with the imaging findings, the impact of ART and interpretation of imaging in the context of clinical and laborato

[Alpha herpesvirus infections in AIDS patients].

Alpha-herpesvirus infections by herpes simplex virus and varicella-zoster virus among HIV-infected patients were summarized. These infections were occurred in a high frequency and shown to be extensive lesions, prolonged virus excretion from the lesions, generalized infection, and uncommon diseases as compared these of with immunocompetent patients. Acyclovir-resistant viruses appeared. These evidences supplied the profound understanding of the pathogenesis and new subjects in the field of herpesvirus infection. Pneumocystis Pneumonia in Previously Undiagnosed Advanced HIV/AIDS and Importance of HIV Screening.

The diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in its late stages, also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), leads to increased morbidity and mortality. This is mostly due to the time given for opportunistic infections to arise, which present with their own complications. In this case report, we present an otherwise healthy 38-year-old male, who presented with general systemic symptoms and was later found to have HIV and AIDS, ultimately resulting in his death during this hospital admission. This case report will discuss HIV-associated opportunistic infections, focusing mor

Microbiologic and histologic diagnosis of histoplasmosis in Taiwan.

Histoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised patients in endemic areas. We report the first two microbiologically documented cases of histoplasmosis in Taiwan. The first patient, with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and a depleted CD4+ lymphocyte count, presented with a history of prolonged fever, papular skin rashes, pancytopenia and elevation of liver enzymes. He was diagnosed and treated initially for systemic toxoplasmosis, but the microbiologic and pathologic findings of the autopsied specimens disclosed disseminated infection caused by
