Review of current technologies for urinary incontinence: strengths and limitations.

A wide range of continence products is available, and this paper focuses on products to prevent incontinence (such as urinals and commodes) and to contain or manage urinary incontinence (such as absorbent pads, penile sheaths and urethral catheters). Drawing on results from published clinical evaluations at the Continence Product Evaluation Network at UCL and at other centres, the strengths and limitations of the major categories of incontinence products currently on the market are reviewed. It is concluded that, although products for continence have improved considerably over the last 20 year

Association Between Absorbent Product Use and Quality of Life in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

AIM: Absorbent products are widely used to manage incontinence. However, the circumstances under which they are used and whether burden differs by product type remain unclear. We conducted a population-based study to evaluate the association between incontinence-related quality of life (QOL) and absorbent product use and to compare burden across product types. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included independent, community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 75 years in Japan. Incontinence status and absorbent product use were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Incontinence-related QO

Corneal Injury from Presurgical Chlorhexidine Skin Preparation.

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine skin preparation has been shown to provide highly effective antimicrobial presurgical skin cleansing. However, there is a significant risk of ocular toxicity when it is used in periocular areas. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe 2 cases of significant corneal damage resulting from 4% chlorhexidine gluconate preoperative skin cleanser, despite the use of protective occlusive dressing over the eyes. Because of the potential for severe corneal toxicity resulting from use of chlorhexidine, alternative agents such as 10% povidone-iodine should be considered for skin preparati

Management of a Patient With Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Using Silicone Transfer Foam Dressings and a Secondary Absorbent Dressing.

BACKGROUND: Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is an exfoliative disorder of the skin usually caused by a drug reaction. The primary goal of wound care for patients with TEN is prevention of further mechanical trauma to the skin, along with management of wound infection. CASE: A 77-year-old woman with TEN was successfully managed with a perforated silver soft contact foam and a superabsorbent outer layer. Topical therapy combined nanoparticle silver for management of wound infection and minimized trauma to the skin as only the outer layer needed to be changed. CONCLUSION: The silicone foam dre

Reliability of urine collection pads for routine and metabolic biochemistry in infants and young children.

The aim of our study was to evaluate whether specifically designed urine collection pads give reliable results for routine and metabolic biochemistry tests in paediatric urine. Urine collected by bag or clean-catch from infants and children <2 yrs without metabolic disorders was divided into two aliquots, one of which was added to a collection pad, incubated for 15 min at 37 degrees C (simulating in vivo collection conditions), then recovered by aspiration. Urine from adults with phaeochromocytoma and aqueous solutions of catecholamines were similarly treated. Routine, catecholamine, and metab

Advanced design of 3D knitted padding for wearable cushioning in knee protector.

Wearable cushioned products protect the body during sporting activities or work-related activities. Cushioning paddings made of elastomeric materials are used to absorb impact forces. The paddings are usually inelastic, which could be challenging to accommodate the movement of knee joints and lead to displacement. In this study, a new knitted composite which consists of soft surface layers, a shock absorption middle layer made of monofilament and silicone inlays and additional elastic inlays in the surface layer to accommodate the body contours is developed. The three-layer structure is knitte

Comparative evaluation of the functional properties of superabsorbent dressings and their effect on exudate management.

A range of wound dressings currently available in the UK and elsewhere, each claiming to possess different performance characteristics, can make dressing selection difficult. This report concentrates on the superabsorbent polymer dressings (SAPs) - which are designed to absorb medium to high levels of exudate and to maintain an 'ideal moist wound healing environment'. What do these dressings achieve, what are they suitable/not suitable for, and are all super-absorbent dressings equal in terms of performance and quality? When assessing the key performance characteristics of absorbency, moisture

Managing faecal incontinence or leakage: the Peristeen Anal Plug.

Incontinence can be a devastating problem to many individuals. It is embarrassing and limiting socially, and prevents those with the problem from going about their day-to-day activities. People adopt coping strategies to manage the problem and those with urinary incontinence often look for containment products such as disposable pads or nappy-style products. These products have been developed using different absorbent materials and are accessible to sufferers in local supermarkets. Absorbency of the products has improved so that once wetted, they hold urine more easily. However, the same canno

4. Bedwetting and toileting problems in children.

Bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) is common. It occurs in up to 20% of 5 year olds and 10% of 10 year olds, with a spontaneous remission rate of 14% per year. Weekly daytime wetting occurs in 5% of children, most of whom (80%) also wet the bed. Bedwetting can have a considerable impact on children and families, affecting a child's self-esteem and interpersonal relationships, and his or her performance at school. Primary nocturnal enuresis (never consistently dry at night) should be distinguished from secondary nocturnal enuresis (previously dry for at least 6 months). Important risk factors for

Removal of comfort pads underneath babies: a method of reducing radiation exposure to neonates.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The recent increasing utilization of imaging has increased the population exposure to ionizing radiation. With increasing knowledge of the potential harm of radiation exposure, efforts should be made to minimize patient radiation whenever possible, especially in young children. The purpose of this study was to use the exposure index (EI) standard to assess the potential for reducing radiation dose to babies by removing a soft comfort pad, often placed underneath the baby. The pad is located between the baby and the image detector plate. As such it absorbs x-rays that
