Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were determined for a historical cohort of achondroplastic individuals identified through the Medical G … ontributing factor in these deaths. This study suggests that the bony abnormalities associated with achondroplasia--i.e., foramen magnum and spinal canal stenosis--may have a significant effect on mortality at all ages but particularly in children. Efforts to minimize these complications are recommended.

Five cases and a review of the literature concerning achondroplasia and pregnancy are described. Cephalopelvic disproportion secondary to marked pelvic contracture is the most consistent feature. Preeclampsia is more frequent but usually did not become a major problem regarding obstetric management. Polyhydramnios may indicate a poor prognosis for the fetus. Dyspnea on exertion and at rest is quite variable and may be related to associated vertebral column deformities. Fetal wastage and neonatal death are increased.

Achondroplasia is the most common form of short limb dwarfism in humans. The shortening of the limb lengths in achondroplasia is widely described as "rhizomelic." While this appearance may be convincing clinically, the description is not necessarily true or helpful radiologically. The aims of this study, were therefore, to determine whether rhizomelic shortening is a true feature of achondroplasia at diagnosis in infancy. Humeral, radial, femoral, and tibial diaphyseal lengths were recorded by two independent observers from 22 skeletal surveys of infants with achondroplasia and compared with 1…

We report on a 14-year-old girl with the achondroplasia-hypochondroplasia complex. This patient has been reported previously [McKusick et al, 1973], and we offer an update on her condition. The patient has clinical features different from both achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia and is mentally retarded. Radiological changes, which have occurred over 14 years, are included.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is to delineate the neurological complications seen in patients with achondroplasia.
RECENT FINDINGS: As the understanding of the genetics of this disorder has advanced, the possibility of targets for intervention which might modify the development and management of the neurological complications of this disease may be identified. Achondroplasia is a hereditary short-limbed dwarfism which has been known for millennia. The genetic defect is a gain of function sequence variation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). This gene normally regulates (inhi…

Acanthosis nigricans (AN) in those with achondroplasia has been reported occasionally in the literature previously. Other disorders arising from constitutive activation of FGFR3 also manifest AN at various frequencies. We assessed the prevalence of AN in a sequential series of 477 individuals with achondroplasia. Using a REDCap database, we collected and analyzed what other features or medical issues may co-occur with AN in those with achondroplasia. AN arises in approximately 10% of individuals with achondroplasia. It usually first appears in preadolescence or adolescence, is more likely in t…
