Numerical phenetic classification of clinically significant aerobic sporoactinomycetes and related organisms.

Clinically significant aerobic sporoactinomycetes, notably agents of mycetoma, were examined for a balanced set of unit characters and the resultant data analysed using standard numerical taxonomic procedures. All save two of the one hundred and seventy three tested strains were assigned to three multimembered cluster-groups, which encompassed sixteen major (4-7 strains), ten minor (2-3 strains) and forty single membered clusters, in an analysis based on the simple matching coefficient and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages algorithm. The three cluster-groups were equated wi

Mucosal immune response to Tropheryma whipplei.

Whipple's disease is a rare infectious disease caused by the ubiquitously occurring Tropheryma whipplei in predisposed persons. Genetic or acquired defects in the mucosal and peripheral immune system become apparent as diminished Th1 immune functions with decreased production of IL-12 and IFN-gamma accompanied by an increased secretion of IL-4. These defects may enable T. whipplei to survive and replicate. The recently established cultivation of the bacterium in HEL cells and the isolation from infected intestinal biopsies enable a multitude of experimental possibilities which may lead to an i

Uncommon finding in a pulmonary graft versus host disease: A first report of Tsukamurella pneumonia in a pulmonary graft-versus-host disease.

A 64-year-old woman presented to Our Department with 2 weeks history of fever and cough. Through a series of radiological and invasive diagnostic studies we finally reach an unexpected diagnosis of Tsukamurella pneumonia; Diagnosing an ILD is a dynamic process, and that is the reason why complex cases discussed in a multidisciplinary team may need to be reconsidered in light of evolution of the disease and the results of the performed exams with a flexible approach. Tsukamurella spp. is an obligate aerobic, Gram-positive, weakly acid-fast, non-motile bacillus that belongs to the order Actinomy

Actinomadura vinacea isolated from a nonhealing cutaneous wound in a cat.

A 6-year-old, spayed female, domestic shorthair cat was presented to the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital for a 3-year history of a nonhealing wound on the right tarsus. The wound temporarily resolved with medical management, but intermittently recurred when antimicrobials were discontinued. At presentation, the wound had become refractory to antimicrobial therapy. Physical examination revealed a 1 cm diameter crust along the medial aspect of the right tarsus. Proximal to the crust, were 2 non-painful, fluctuant swollen areas that were free of drainage. Cytologic evaluation r

Mycetoma of the calf.

Actinomycetous infections typically involve either the head and neck or the extremities following a traumatic implantation. Classic clinical associations are draining sinus tracts. This case report describes the pathologic and MR findings of a relatively acute mycetomatous process involving the soft tissues. Pathologic findings in this case included an occasional granule composed of gram positive, thin branching elements. These and other findings were consistent with actinomycetes bacterium infection. The discussion centers around the use of MR, both with and without gadolinium, in evaluating

Oerskovia xanthineolytica bacteremia in an immunocompromised patient with pneumonia.

Oerskovia species, which are Nocardia-like bacteria that have rarely been found to cause human disease, are usually found in association with a foreign body with removal of the infected focus being necessary for cure. We present a case of Oerskovia xanthineolytica bacteremia in a patient with metastatic breast cancer, community-acquired pneumonia, and a tunneled subcutaneous central venous catheter. Although the actual source of the bacteremia in this case is not proven, this patient's presentation with apparent lobar pneumonia and her improvement on antibiotics without catheter removal sugges

Actinomycetoma caused by Nocardiopsis dassonvillei.

We report a case of mycetoma caused by Nocardiopsis dassonvillei in a 39-year-old man. He had multiple nodules and draining sinuses on the anterior aspect of his right leg just below the knee. Few cream-colored granules were seen in the exudate. The biopsy specimen showed gram-positive, non-acid-fast granules with distinct borders. An aerobic actinomycete isolated from the lesion was identified as N dassonvillei. We think that this is the first reported case of mycetoma caused by N dassonvillei.

Parkinson's: another look.

Recent studies in the Parkinson's literature have cited a tuberculosis-like germ called Nocardia as being responsible for Parkinson's disease. Kohbata seemingly cemented a relationship between Nocardia and Parkinson's by finding serologic evidence in 20 of 20 Parkinson's patients, acknowledging that blood tests for Nocardia and the mycobacteria such as tuberculosis often cross-react, as they belong to the same order of bacteria, the Actinomycetales. Besides this difficulty in differentiation, a well-used medical school textbook of microbiology, Atlas, points out that even among experts, differ

Tracking plant, fungal, and bacterial DNA in honey specimens.

Consuming honey can result in adverse effects owing to poisoning by bacterial (botulism) or plant toxins. We have devised a method to extract polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifiable DNA of up to c. 400 bp in length based on dialysis of a 15-mL honey sample for 18 h against deionized water followed by sequential extraction using phenol, phenol/chloroform/isoamyl alcohol, chloroform/isoamyl alcohol, and ether. Sequence analysis of PCR products obtained using "universal" plant, fungal, and bacterial primers targeted to the ribosomal RNA genes has allowed us to identify six different orders of

Pleuropulmonary nocardiosis, an unusual radiological presentation: Case report.

Nocardiosis is caused by strict aerobic filamentous bacteria of the genus Nocardia belonging to the order Actinomycetales with Actinomyces, Streptomyces and Mycobacterium. The radio-clinical presentation in the chest is often misleading. We report a case of pulmonary nocardiosis with an unusual radiological presentation. A 54-year-old patient, chronic smoker, never treated for pulmonary tuberculosis, who presented with a chronic cough complicated by moderate hemoptysis, all evolving in a context of altered general condition and feverish sensations. The radiological aspect was in favor of a hyd

Cutaneous nocardiosis by a new pathogenic species: Nocardia grenadensis.

Nocardiosis is a rare, predominantly opportunistic, suppurative disease caused by bacteria of the order Actinomycetales. There are currently more than 100 species of Nocardia described, less than half are pathogenic to humans. Cutaneous nocardiosis can be caused by direct inoculation from a contaminated material or by secondary dissemination. The authors present a 70-year-old man with an autoimmune haemolytic anaemia treated with prednisolone and azathioprine. The patient presented multiple erythematous tender nodules with linear distribution and proximal progression along the left upper limb

A rubber-degrading organism growing from a human body.

Patients with hematological malignancies are susceptible to unusual infections, because of the use of broad-spectrum anti-infective agents, invasive procedures, and other immunocompromising procedures and medications. Gordonia polyisoprenivorans, a ubiquitous environmental aerobic actinomycete belonging to the family of Gordoniaceae in the order Actinomycetales, is a very rare cause of bacteremia in these patients. We report the first case of pneumonia with associated bacteremia due to this organism, which was initially described in 1999 as a rubber-degrading bacterium following isolation from

Incidence of tonsillar lesions caused by Tonsillophilus suis and Actinomyces sp infection in swine.

The tonsils of ten fattening pigs were compared with those of ten breeding sows to determine the relative incidence of Tonsillophilus suis and Actinomyces sp lesions. Macroscopic observation revealed mildly focal upheavals on the tonsillar mucosal surfaces of two of the breeding sows. In tonsillar slices from both pig groups, tiny nodules containing sulfur granules were found. Histopathologically, the T. suis and Actinomyces sp lesions were noted as tonsillar crypt abscesses in both pig groups, and granulomas due to T. suis were seen in the breeding sows. T. suis showed larger 'club-shaped' st

Endometritis in the mare caused by a Coryneform organism--a case report and experimental studies.

Persistent purulent endometritis in a mare was attributed to an unclassified species of Corynebacterium. Following intrauterine infusions of 20% betadine for 5 days the purulent vulval discharge ceased and the mare appeared clinically normal. Based on histological examination of endometrial biopsy samples, the severe acute inflammatory reaction had largely resolved 2 days after therapy. Three maiden mares considered resistant to bacterial endometritis received single intrauterine inoculations of 1.8 X 10(9) colony-forming units of the Corynebacterium species. The uterine response was followed
