Purinergic signalling displays an anti-inflammatory profile in the spleen of fish experimentally infected with Aeromonas caviae: Modulation of the immune response.

Extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and its metabolite adenosine (Ado) are recognized as key mediators of immune and inflammatory responses. Depending on its concentration, ATP may act as an immunostimulant or immunodepressant, while Ado levels display an anti-inflammatory profile. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether splenic purinergic signalling is capable of modulating immune and inflammatory responses in fish experimentally infected with Aeromonas caviae. Triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (NTPDase) and 5'-nucleotidase activities increased in the spleen of silver catfish (Rham…

Case Report: A rare infection of multidrug-resistant Aeromonas caviae in a pediatric case with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and review of the literature.

Aeromonas caviae infection of the bloodstream and intestine is a rare and severe opportunistic infection in immunocompromised people. In Southwest China, we first reported a case of bloodstream and intestinal infection with multidrug-resistant (MDR) Aeromonas caviae in a 4-year-old child with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Blood and stool cultures were used to identify the infection. The selection of antibiotics was based on clinical expertise and medication sensitivity tests. We used linezolid, levofloxacin, and polymyxin B to treat the patient aggressively. Aeromonas caviae infection i…

Influence of polarisation and differentiation on interaction of 43-kDa outer-membrane protein of Aeromonas caviae with human enterocyte-like Caco-2 cell line.

It has been recognised that adherence and invasion to host cells are important steps in the pathogenesis of entero-pathogenic bacteria, including Aeromonas caviae. However, the virulence factors of A. caviae remain, for the most part, poorly known. This study examined the interaction of A. caviae isolates to Caco-2 cells in different polarisation and differentiation conditions. The adherence of A. caviae may be related to accessibility of host cell basolateral receptors. Aggregative A. caviae isolates, grown at 22 degrees C, were more adherent in both non-polarised and undifferentiated Caco-2 …

Pan-resistome and genomic plasticity analysis of antibiotic resistance in Aeromonas: new vaccine targets for A. caviae, A. veronii and A. hydrophila through reverse vaccinology.

Aeromonas species are globally significant pathogens. However, the mechanisms driving their antimicrobial resistance patterns remain unclear. This study addresses the spread of resistance genes in the Aeromonas genus through a large-scale genomic analysis of all complete Aeromonas genomes in the RefSeq database. The emergence of next-generation genomic sequencing enabled the sequencing, assembling and annotation of numerous genomes with a description and characterization of the genomic plasticity and the pan-resistome, through bioinformatics programmes, of each species in the Aeromonas genus,

A potential alternative to traditional antibiotics in aquaculture: Yeast glycoprotein exhibits antimicrobial effect in vivo and in vitro on Aeromonas caviae isolated from Carassius auratus gibelio.

In aquaculture, antibiotics are commonly used to provide protection against pathogens; however, this practice has become controversial due to increased occurrences of microbial resistance, and alternatives are needed. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of yeast glycoprotein (YG) against Aeromonas caviae. Pathogens were isolated from liver of diseased Carassius auratus gibelio. Based on morphological and biochemical analysis, together with 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the isolated strains were identified as A. caviae and concluded as clones of a single strain and named L2. …

Aeromonas-associated gastroenteritis in children.

During a 20-month period 55 strains of Aeromonas species were isolated from 53 children with diarrhea. The isolation rate of 2.5% for Aeromonas compared with the rates of 4.5% for Shigella, 3.3% for Salmonella, 2.7% for Campylobacter and 0.05% for Yersinia. In 45 children Aeromonas was the sole bacterial enteropathogen identified. Aeromonas was also isolated from 2 (0.5%) of 380 asymptomatic children. Despite its known lack of identifiable virulence properties, Aeromonas caviae was the most prevalent species, accounting for 69% of the isolates. None of the A. caviae strains produced cytotoxin …

Phylogenetic diversity of Aeromonas from "alheira," a traditional Portuguese meat product.

"Alheira" is a traditional smoked meat sausage produced in the north of Portugal, representing an important economic resource for the region. This meat product has been subjected to research studies with the aim of detecting the presence of common foodborne pathogens, but, to our knowledge, isolation of emerging foodborne Aeromonas from alheira has never been previously described. Present work attempts to evaluate the Aeromonas species diversity of 84 isolates of Aeromonas spp. collected from 32 alheira samples. All presumptive Aeromonas isolates were subjected to genotyping by enterobacterial

Aeromonas dhakensis - A red alert in blood cultures!

Although Aeromonas dhakensis has recently been reported as an important human pathogen, it is still less frequently identified in comparison to Aeromonas hydrophila or Aeromonas caviae, due to the problem of identification in certain automated systems. This case report provides an impetus to identify and report this organism as soon as possible. Further studies on this organism's virulence and pathogenic mechanism, especially in healthcare settings, are warranted.

Aeromonas dhakensis is not a rare cause of Aeromonas bacteremia in Hiroshima, Japan.

Aeromonas dhakensis, a newly recognized species, is often misidentified as A. hydrophila, A. veronii, or A. caviae by commercial phenotypic tests. Limited data about A. dhakensis are available in Japan. We retrospectively analyzed the patients with monomicrobial Aeromonas bacteremia at Hiroshima University Hospital from January 2011 to December 2017, and species re-identification was conducted using rpoD and gyrB gene sequencing and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) system. Of the 19 strains from blood isolates, A. caviae (n = 9, 47.4%)

The role of Aeromonas genotyping in virulence for Dicentrarchus labrax.

Aeromonas septicemia still represents a serious challenge facing the global aquaculture sector. In the present study, Aeromonas caviae and A. veronii were isolated from four diseased European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) farms experiencing a high mortality rate. Diseased fish showed haemorrhages on the external body surface with exophthalmia, cataracts, scale desquamation, skin ulcers and fin erosions. The most common post-mortem findings were congested internal organs, particularly the liver and posterior kidney. Twenty-eight A. Veronii and 11 A. caviae isolates were identified biochemicall…

Aeromonas hydrophila folliculitis associated with an inflatable swimming pool: mimicking Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

Aeromonas species are ubiquitous, facultative, anaerobic, gram-negative flagellated rods, mainly found in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Skin and soft-tissue infections, including cellulitis and wound infections, are the second most frequent location of isolations of Aeromonas spp. in clinical samples, after the gastrointestinal tract. All three major Aeromonas species (A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. veroni biotype sobria) have been associated with wound infections, but A. hydrophila predominates. Typically, infection occurs after trauma and subsequent exposure to contaminated fresh water or
