Simulation of aircraft flights with turbulence and icing conditions.

Turbulence and icing are dangerous situations frequently encountered in flight. It is useful to detect them to enable pilots to adapt flight, to estimate aircraft structural fatigue or to design robust flight control laws. Unfortunately, there is a lack of available data covering such phenomena. To address this, we propose a database of 22 simulated flights over a total duration of 52 hours. Flight plans are based on actual flights. A control system is set up to ensure that the simulated aircraft follows the flight plans. Turbulence is added using a Von Karman spectra and icing is added using

Are persistent aircraft trails a threat to the environment and health?

According to most scientific studies, media and governments, the white trails that can be seen behind aircraft in flight, corresponding to condensation mixed with engine particulate emissions, only persist under specific atmospheric conditions. They are called condensation trails, and cirrus contrails when they remain for hours to reach several kilometers wide. The fact that they have gradually filled the skies over the last twenty years would be due to the increase in air traffic. However, other official documents link these persistent trails to a weather modification technology called solar

Topological Design of a Lightweight Sandwich Aircraft Spoiler.

In this study, a lightweight sandwich aircraft spoiler (AS) with a high stiffness-to-weight ratio was designed. Excellent mechanical properties were achieved by the synthetic use of topology optimization (TO), lattice structure techniques, and high-performance materials, i.e., titanium alloy and aluminum alloy. TO was first utilized to optimize the traditional aircraft spoiler to search for the stiffest structure with a limited material volume, where titanium alloy and aluminum alloy were used for key joints and other parts of the AS, respectively. We then empirically replaced the fine feature

Survival After Ditching in Motorized Aircraft, 1989-2022.

INTRODUCTION: Although an unintended aircraft landing on water (referred to as ditching) is a rare event, the potential for occupant injury/fatality increases immediately following the event due to adverse conditions. However, to date, few studies have addressed the subject. Herein, ditching events and post-ditching survival were investigated.METHODS: Ditchings (1982-2022) in the United States were identified from the National Transportation Safety Board database. Occupant injury severity, aircraft type, pilot experience, flight conditions, and number of occupants were extracted. Poisson distr

[Occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium during aircraft painting].

Hygienists are interested in hexavalent chromium due to its genotoxic and carcinogenic effect on humans. The use of products containing hexavalent chromium is decreasing in many industrial fields because of the substitution with less-toxic compounds. In the aeronautical industry, however, the chromate are added to primer paint as a corrosion inhibitor of aircrafts surfaces: so hexavalent chromium compounds are available in many primers with a composition ranging from 10% to 13%. The application of these primers by using electrostatic guns potentially exposes painting and coating workers at hig

Piracetam and fish orientation during parabolic aircraft flight.

Goldfish were flown in parabolic Keplerian trajectories in a KC-135 aircraft to assay both the effectiveness of piracetam as an anti-motion sickness drug and the effectiveness of state-dependent training during periods of oscillating gravity levels. Single-frame analyses of infrared films were performed for two classes of responses--roll rates in hypogravity or hypogravity orienting responses (LGR) and climbing responses in hypergravity or hypergravity orienting responses (HGR). In Experiment I, preflight training with a vestibular stressor facilitated suppression of LGR by the 10th parabola.

Comprehensive Review: Ultraviolet-C (UVC) Disinfection in Aircraft Cabins.

Ultraviolet-C (UVC) disinfection has gained considerable attention as a continuous, real-time method to mitigate the transmission of airborne pathogens within aircraft cabins. Recent investigations have demonstrated its potential to inactivate viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and other emerging infectious agents in situ, thereby reducing both immediate infection risks and broader public health burdens. This commentary evaluates how continuous UVC disinfection-applied in tandem with established preventive measures-may effectively curtail disease transmission, reassure passengers, and info

Cognitive Framework for Aircraft Piloting: A Core Cognition Set.

Human factors remain the predominant contributors to aviation accidents, yet the cognitive foundations of pilot performance have not been systematically defined. Existing cognitive frameworks inadequately represent the complex, high-demand environment of flight operations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify a core cognition set for piloting, defined as the minimal group of cognitive modules most consistently related to flight performance, and to examine how these modules are affected by aviation-specific risk factors. A total of 93 studies were included in this review.

Learning aircraft procedures through an immersive virtual reality environment.

Pilot trainees must familiarize themselves with a cockpit and master the associated procedures, i.e. specified sequences of interaction. Usually, this self-regulated learning relies on paper-based procedures and a cockpit poster, which can be monotonous and demotivating for trainees. In this study, N=36 pilot students tested the efficiency of a new Virtual Reality (VR) training tool for learning aircraft procedures. Results were compared with previously collected data from both traditional paper-based training and desktop training software embedded on a tactile screen. Participants were more m

Aircraft noise, air pollution, and mortality from myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVE: Myocardial infarction has been associated with both transportation noise and air pollution. We examined residential exposure to aircraft noise and mortality from myocardial infarction, taking air pollution into account. METHODS: We analyzed the Swiss National Cohort, which includes geocoded information on residence. Exposure to aircraft noise and air pollution was determined based on geospatial noise and air-pollution (PM10) models and distance to major roads. We used Cox proportional hazard models, with age as the timescale. We compared the risk of death across categories of A-wei

Children's annoyance reactions to aircraft and road traffic noise.

Since annoyance reactions of children to environmental noise have rarely been investigated, no source specific exposure-response relations are available. The aim of this paper is to investigate children's reactions to aircraft and road traffic noise and to derive exposure-response relations. To this end, children's annoyance reactions to aircraft and road traffic noise in both the home and the school setting were investigated using the data gathered in a cross-sectional multicenter study, carried out among 2844 children (age 9-11 years) attending 89 primary schools around three European airpor

A bloodborne pathogen program in civilian aircraft accident investigation.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) amended 29 CFR Part 1910 in 1991 to include regulations addressing occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens (BBP). The rule affects all employees that have the potential for occupational exposure to these pathogens. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are the primary organizations involved in aircraft accident investigation in the United States. No other organizations in this country have a similar scope or mandate of responsibility. An accident scene presents significant challen

Fractional effective dose model for post-crash aircraft survivability.

The development of a survival model for post-crash aircraft cabin fires is described in this paper. Its development is based on an extensive review of the literature on the toxicity of combustion gases and on thermal hazards. This model is to be used as a predictive tool to gauge human survivability in full scale aircraft cabin fire tests. The extensive literature search was conducted for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), low oxygen, hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen bromide (HBr), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), acrolein

Thermal comparison of aircrew clothing aboard OV-10 aircraft.

Thermal evaluation of aircrew clothing in the field usually involves conditions which make it difficult to distinguish clothing effects from other, confounding factors. This paper reports a field study designed to solve this problem. The question concerned possible heat stress effects caused by adding an oxygen mask, an anti-g suit, or both to the usual clothing worn by pilots of OV-10 (twin turboprop) aircraft during 20 hot-weather flights (actual experimental temperatures of Tdb = 28-38 degrees C, rh = 18-20%). The four test ensembles were flown simultaneously, allowing side-by-side comparis

Pilot Ultraviolet A Exposures in the Cockpit of Flying Commercial Aircraft.

INTRODUCTION: Pilots have an increased incidence of cutaneous melanoma compared to the general population; occupational exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of several potential risk factors. Cockpit windshields effectively block UVB (280-315 nm) but further analysis is needed for UVA (315-400 nm). The objective of this observational study was to assess transmission of UVA through cockpit windshields and to measure doses of UVA at pilots' skin under daytime flying conditions. METHODS: A spectrometer was used to measure in-flight spectral transmission through each of the 6 cockpit win

An International Aircraft Transport of a Neonate From Georgia to Japan.

International air transport over long distances necessitates considerable effort. It is even more challenging when the patient is a neonate and has a congenital disease. We hereby report a case of an international aircraft transport of a neonate from Tbilisi, Georgia to Osaka, Japan. The patient was transported to Osaka University Hospital after being diagnosed with a double outlet right ventricle (DORV), requiring surgical intervention. This unique experience has raised four issues: 1) language issues for referral and consultation; 2) medical equipment and healthcare professionals required to
