In 122 patients with the haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), serum proteins were analysed in the acute phase of the disease (n = 122) and 6 weeks (n = 57) and 6 months (n = 84) later. Total serum protein levels were significantly lower on admission than 6 weeks and 6 months later (P < 0.0001). The same was true for median values of serum albumin (P < 0.0001), alpha 2-globulins (P < 0.0001) and gamma-globulins (P < 0.001). It has been established that morphine interacts with albumins, alpha 2- and beta-globulins, while promedol with all globulin fractions and to a less measure with plasma albumins of the intact rabbit. Interaction of morphine and especially that of promedol with the same protein fractions of allergizated animals proceeds more actively and is characterized by a more pronounced formation of biological complexes with alpha 1-globulins. Decreased pharmacological activity of morphine and promedol coincides with intensification of their interaction with proteins.

Serum protein of Swiss albino mice infected with Ancylostoma caninum larvae, were analysed electrophoretically. Twenty mice were infected with a dose of 1000 larvae and the alterations in serum protein during an infection period of 30 days were recorded and compared with uninfected controls. The result showed a significant decrease in albumin and gamma globulin with an increase in beta globulin. There were no significant changes in the alpha-1 and alpha-2 globulins. The total globulins increased and A/G ratio decreased. These changes appeared to be remarkable on the 9th day after infection.

Significant decrease in serum globulin took place in Hymenolepis nana mouse model treated with lead prior to infection. Decrease of alpha, beta and gamma globulins was maximum on day 4 in comparison to that of control, gradually tapering off by day 100 when suppression was minimum with the experimental values almost reaching the same level as those of the control. Thus, suppression of globulins was neither total nor permanent.

This study evaluated serum protein fractions, HDL-cholesterol, total immunoglobulin G and total immunoglobulin E levels in patients with acute and chronic paracoccidioidomycosis, by means of electrophoresis, enzymatic reaction and immunoenzymatic assay. Albino rats were kept for long periods on a steatogenous, hypoproteic, hyperlipidic diets, either with or without choline. Serum protein and liver soluble protein and enzyme values showed changes that were only partly similar to those observed in human and experimental cirrhosis. The main features, in fact, were an absolute and percent decrease in albumins, an increase in serum alpha1-globulins and alpha proteins generally, and, more particularly, a constant fall in gamma-globulins and enzymes migrating to this site.

Serum from 30 young alligators was examined by free boundary, starch block, and cellulose acetate strip electrophoresis. The patterns obtained showed that the alligator serum proteins differ significantly from those of other chordates in that an alpha-globulin is the major component. The average ratio of alpha-globulin to albumin in the serum is 3.4. In this respect it resembles serum of human beings with renal disease in which the alpha-globulin ratio to albumin ratio reaches 3.0.

Antithrombin activities in 30 severely malnourished children and 40 normal children were estimated in clotting tests by thrombin neutralisation as anti-Xa and by a heparin antithrombin assay; and by immunodiffusion as alpha 2-globulin and alpha 1-antitrypsin. The patients' mean alpha 2-globulin was severely depressed, and there were less marked depletions in mean values for thrombin neutralisation, anti-Xa, and in the heparin antithrombin assay (which showed the flat curve thought to reflect a thrombotic tendency). Few previous reports clarified that patients with an increased alpha 1 globulin fraction in their serum protein electrophoresis, will have resistance to the neuromuscular block of atracurium. Having a patient with diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis and a marked elevation of alpha 1 globulin fraction in her electrophoresis, we took this opportunity to monitor the neuromuscular block of atracurium. The data obtained, confirm previous studies showing that patients with a marked increase in alpha 1 globulin fraction may have a resistance to the action of atracurium.
