Increasing xylazine dose-enhanced anesthetic properties of telazol-xylazine combination in swine.

We evaluated combinations of telazol, ketamine, and xylazine (TKX), telazol and xylazine (TX), telazol, xylazine, and xylazine (T2X), and ketamine and xylazine (KX) for chemical restraint and anesthesia induction in swine. Forty healthy mixed-breed pigs were randomly assigned to the four treatment groups with 10 pigs in each group. For TKX, TX, and T2X combinations, anesthetics were premixed by adding xylazine and ketamine, sterile water and xylazine, or xylazine alone directly into the telazol vial. For KX, anesthetic agents were drawn up separately, then mixed in the same syringe immediately

Critical Appraisal: Anesthetic Management and Perioperative Predictors of Outcomes in Combined Body Contouring Procedures.

This letter discusses the paper authored by Sahin et al. titled "Anesthetic Management and Perioperative Risk Factors in Combined Body Contouring Procedures: Brazilian Butt Lift, Liposuction and Abdominoplasty." Notable strengths include the large cohort (n = 1120) and the standardized protocols, as well as the low complication rate (0.8%). Noteworthy weaknesses include methodological concerns, which limit the conclusions. The selection bias of the retrospective design and ASA I-II classification compared with data from national datasets reporting higher morbidity are limitations. Because of i

Safety of combined use of local anesthetic infiltration and reinfusion drains in total knee arthroplasty.

Injection of local anesthetic during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been shown to aid postoperative pain relief. Reinfusion drains have also proven useful in decreasing allogenic blood transfusion. Combined use carries the risk of reinfusion of local anesthetic from drainage bag. We examined plasma ropivacaine concentrations from 20 patients undergoing TKA, who were treated with these 2 techniques. Samples were taken from a dedicated venous cannula and from the reinfusion drainage bag. The average amount of ropivacaine reinfused was 1.9 mg, a fraction of the injected dose (150 mg), and veno

Comparison of the Anesthetic Effects of Alfaxalone Combined with Xylazine or Dexmedetomidine in Captive Formosa Serows (Capricornis swinhoei).

Formosan serows are an endemic species in Taiwan. Alfaxalone, a γ-aminobutyric acidA agonist, induces or maintains anesthesia in various veterinary species with reported potential adverse effects of respiratory depression and tachycardia. α2-Adrenoceptor agonists exert sedative and muscle relaxation effects, along with substantial cardiovascular adverse effects. Here, we aimed to evaluate the anesthetic effects of alfaxalone combined with xylazine or dexmedetomidine (AX vs. AD, respectively) in Formosan serows. In this randomized, masked study, AX was administered to four serows, and AD was ad

Cardiorespiratory effects of intramuscular alfaxalone combined with low-dose medetomidine and butorphanol in dogs anesthetized with sevoflurane.

BACKGROUND: The intramuscular (IM) administration of 7.5-10 mg/kg of alfaxalone produces anesthetic effects that enable endotracheal intubation with mild cardiorespiratory depression in dogs. However, the effects of IM co-administration of medetomidine, butorphanol, and alfaxalone on cardiorespiratory function under inhalation anesthesia have not been studied. AIM: To assess the cardiorespiratory function following the IM co-administration of 5 μg/kg of medetomidine, 0.3 mg/kg of butorphanol, and 2.5 mg/kg of alfaxalone (MBA) in dogs anesthetized with sevoflurane. METHODS: Seven intact healt
