Mortality in Holstein-Friesian calves and replacement heifers, in relation to body weight and IGF-I concentration, on 19 farms in England.

The incidence of mortality and culling in Holstein-Friesian heifers from birth through first calving was determined on 19 dairy farms selected from across southern England. The outcome of 1097 calvings was determined. Size (BW, heart girth, crown-rump length and height at withers) and insulin-like growth factor-I concentration of live heifer calves were measured at a mean age of 26 ± 0.7 days (n = 506). Associations between the heifer-level variables and mortality were determined using clustered binary logistic regression. Perinatal mortality (stillbirths and mortality within the first 24 h of

Diagnostic and economic evaluation of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry with machine learning for screening of Johne's disease from dairy cow serum.

Johne's disease (JD) is an infectious bacterial disease (Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis) that primarily affects the intestinal tract and associated lymph nodes of ruminants, especially in cattle. It is both a herd-level problem and an individual animal problem, as much of the infection is subclinical. This disease has a significant impact due to drastic production losses and early culling of animals. Here, we used MALDI-TOF MS for diagnostic screening of JD state from serum samples collected in the panhandle of Texas. We used several machine learning algorithms for observing pattern

Short communication: Metritis affects milk production and cull rate of Holstein multiparous and primiparous dairy cows differently.

Metritis, a common transition disease in dairy cows, reduces milk production during the duration of the disease. To our knowledge, no work has investigated the short-term effects of metritis on feed intake and the long-term consequences on milk yield and risk of culling. The objectives were to determine the effect of metritis on 305-d lactation curves, dry matter intake (DMI), reproduction, and the probability of being culled. Identifying differences in response to metritis between primiparous and multiparous cows was of interest. Milk records were collected twice daily from Holstein cows diag

One Health: the global challenge of epidemic and endemic leishmaniasis.

'One Health' proposes the unification of medical and veterinary sciences with the establishment of collaborative ventures in clinical care, surveillance and control of cross-species disease, education, and research into disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy and vaccination. The concept encompasses the human population, domestic animals and wildlife, and the impact that environmental changes ('environmental health') such as global warming will have on these populations. Visceral leishmaniasis is a perfect example of a small companion animal disease for which prevention and control might abol

Multi-phase approach to eradicate enzootic mouse coronavirus infection.

Infections with mouse coronavirus (also known as mouse hepatitis virus, MHV) are common and prompt concern because the adverse research effects of infection have been well documented. The animal facility we describe had contained an enzootic infection of mouse coronavirus for more than a decade. Eradication of the virus had been tried with limited success in the past. With an increase in the populations of immune-compromised and transgenic animals elsewhere in the facility, eradication of the virus became a high priority. The affected animals were in multiple breeding colonies comprising more

BSE: a decade on--Part 2.

Predicted numbers vary widely but the most authoritative estimate is that about 6950 cases of BSE will occur in cattle in the UK during 1997-2001 if new infections via feed have ceased as expected and if 10% maternal transmission occurs in the last half-year of the maternal incubation period. This assumes no culling or premature slaughter. Agreed cull strategies would reduce these numbers considerably and accelerate the observed rate of decline of the disease, but there is no scientific necessity for any cull. Bovine products that were banned as specified bovine offals in 1989/90 and as specif

Reproduction and Productivity in Dairy Cattle after Abortions Both Related and Unrelated to Coxiella burnetii.

C. burnetii is a widespread pathogen, causing abortions and reproductive disorders in ruminants. The study aimed to evaluate animal reproductive capacity and productivity after abortion, related and unrelated to C. burnetii. We compared data about the abortion time, the outcome of the animals after an abortion, further reproduction, and productivity for C. burnetii-positive (n = 148) and C. burnetii-negative (n = 149) aborted dairy cows and heifers. C. burnetii-positive animals had a positive serological response or presence of C. burnetii DNA at the time of abortion. C. burnetii-positive anim

Excess Cockerels in the Context of Legal Regulations, Animal Welfare and the Bioeconomy.

The global poultry industry faces a critical ethical and bioeconomic challenge regarding the annual culling of 6-7 billion day-old male layer chicks, which lack commercial value for mass meat production. This study critically evaluates European and global regulatory frameworks alongside the practical, economic, and ethical viability of alternative management strategies. While legislative bans in nations like Germany and France push for in ovo sexing technologies, and several systems are already operational across Europe, these methods currently impose substantial financial burdens and operatio

The influence of litter size on brain damage caused by hypoxic-ischemic injury in the neonatal rat.

Hypoxic ischemia is a common cause of brain injury in the human neonate. This can be mimicked in the neonatal rat, but produces variable injury. The present study investigated the influence of litter size on the severity and variability of damage caused by hypoxic-ischemic injury in neonatal rats. Groups of 7-d-old pups from birth-sized litters (13-15 pups), or from litters culled to 10 on postnatal d 2, and 8- and 9-d-old pups from birth-sized litters, were exposed to common carotid artery occlusion and then, 3 h later, hypoxia (2 h 15 min, 8% oxygen). Damage was assessed histologically 72 h

Effect of laparoscopic ovum pick-up on ovine in vitro oocyte maturation and somatic cell nuclear transfer embryo development.

Mammalian somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is widely used in agricultural research and biomedicine, but remains inefficient and requires large number of oocytes, typically obtained from slaughterhouses (SH) or cull animals with or without superstimulation (Culls-FSH and Culls). Laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) is a less invasive method to collect oocytes and improves SCNT embryo development. Yet no study has directly compared all four sources of oocytes on SCNT embryo development in sheep. This study evaluated the effect of oocyte source on in vitro maturation (IVM) and SCNT embryo in vitr

Heterogeneous shedding of Brucella abortus in milk and its effect on the control of animal brucellosis.

AIMS: To ascertain whether in Brucella abortus-infected water buffalo herds, the number of newly infected animals could be reduced by culling superspreaders (the animals secreting > or =10(4) CFU per ml of milk). METHODS AND RESULTS: The number of B. abortus present in the milk (CFU per ml) from 500 water buffaloes was measured by the culture. Each animal was tested three times, at one month intervals. The presence or the absence of B. abortus in each milk sample was confirmed by PCR. A majority of infected animals shed the pathogen at a low level (< or =10(3) CFU ml(-1)). However, a few infe

Unilateral vocal nerve resection alters neurogenesis in the avian song system in a region-specific manner.

New neurons born in the adult brain undergo a critical period soon after migration to their site of incorporation. During this time, the behavior of the animal may influence the survival or culling of these cells. In the songbird song system, earlier work suggested that adult-born neurons may be retained in the song motor pathway nucleus HVC with respect to motor progression toward a target song during juvenile song learning, seasonal song restructuring, and experimentally manipulated song variability. However, it is not known whether the quality of song per se, without progressive improvement

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype O:1 infection in a captive Seba's short tailed-fruit bat (Carollia perspicillata) colony in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Between February and April 2016, a slight increase in mortality was observed in a colony consisting of 400 captive Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata). These animals cohabited with other nocturnal animal species in a dome of a private zoo in Switzerland. RESULTS: Gross and histological analysis of two (14.3%) out of the 13 animals submitted for necropsy within this period revealed a necrosuppurative pneumonia, hepatitis, splenitis, enterocolitis, and endometritis, with abundant intralesional colonies of Gram-negative rods. Yersinia (Y.) pseudotuberculosis serotype O:

Wildlife Management Practices Associated with Pathogen Exposure in Non-Native Wild Pigs in Florida, U.S.

Land use influences disease emergence by changing the ecological dynamics of humans, wildlife, domestic animals, and pathogens. This is a central tenet of One Health, and one that is gaining momentum in wildlife management decision-making in the United States. Using almost 2000 serological samples collected from non-native wild pigs (Sus scrofa) throughout Florida (U.S.), we compared the prevalence and exposure risk of two directly transmitted pathogens, pseudorabies virus (PrV) and Brucella spp., to test the hypothesis that disease emergence would be positively correlated with one of the most

Association between prepartum nonesterified fatty acid serum concentrations and postpartum diseases in dairy cows.

The objective of the present study was to quantify the relationships between prepartum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations and the development of subsequent diseases or culling and to identify the optimal thresholds allowing identification of animals at high risk of developing postpartum diseases or being culled. A total of 1,299 Holstein cows from 50 commercial herds located around Saint-Hyacinthe (QC, Canada) were enrolled in this observational study. Blood samples were collected from enrolled cows between 1 and 14 d before calving for serum NEFA quantification. Data concerning po

[Control and eradication strategies for classic fowl plague in Germany and the European Union].

The huge potential economic impact of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) substantiates specific and rigorous legal regulations worldwide. According to the O.I.E. Terrestrial Animal Health Code fowl plague is a notifiable disease. International trading activities concerning poultry and poultry products originating from countries with active HPAI are rigorously restricted. In EU member states directive 92/40/EEC subsumes measures against fowl plague and has been transferred into German legislation by the "Geflügelpest-Verordnung". These acts specify that vaccination against HPAI is princip

Associations between herd characteristics and reproductive efficiency in dairy herds.

Dairy herds worldwide are experiencing a decline in reproductive efficiency at the same time as management methods are changing. This study aimed to investigate the extent to which herd-level characteristics were associated with reproductive performance. Data from herds using artificial insemination (AI) in the Swedish Official Milk Recording Scheme that had more than 45 cows were included in the study (total of 2,728 herds). Reproductive performance was measured as the average for each herd for the calving interval, calving to first AI interval, calving to last AI interval, number of AI per a

Epidemiological observations in a Corriedale flock affected by Brucella ovis.

Brucellosis in sheep, caused by Brucella ovis, is primarily a chronic infectious disease of rams with epididymitis as its most characteristic lesion. Six hundred rams from an infected farm were clinically and serologically examined once a year, over a 3-year period. An increase from 2.1% to 6.3% in the prevalence of animals serologically positive to B. ovis occurred over the 3 years. However, the prevalence of rams with lesions in the reproductive tract declined from 14.2% to 6.5% in the third year following one year of strict culling of clinically affected and rams that were serologically pos

[Killing in wild boar traps - Studies on the point of impact and effects of head shots (caliber .22 lr) in wild boar (Sus scrofa)].

OBJECTIVE: The spread of African swine fever in Germany has brought wild boar trapping back into focus as a method for animal disease control. While data on free-bullet slaughter in domestic mammals is available, data on the gun shot and caliber selection for use in wild boar trapping is largely lacking. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The heads of 138 wild boars captured in 10 corral-style traps and shot with a bullet (caliber .22 lr) were analyzed with respect to following data: number of bullet entry holes, bullet entry location, as well as tissue damage to the brain and bleeding by the use of froze
