Intraocular nematodiasis caused by Parelaphostrongylus tenuis in an eland antelope (Taurotragus oryx).

A 10-mo-old female eland (Taurotragus oryx) at the Wilds exhibited recalcitrant, progressive unilateral uveitis for a 5-wk period, despite constant medical treatment. Unilateral enucleation was performed because of blindness and animal discomfort evidenced by continuous blepharospasm. Histopathologic examination of the eye demonstrated intraocular larvae morphologically consistent with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, the first known case of intraocular P. tenuis migration. This animal subsequently was euthanatized because of severe, nonresponsive neurologic signs associated with P. tenuis infectio

Paratuberculosis in saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) and experimental transmission to domestic sheep.

Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was isolated in low numbers from the small intestine and associated mesenteric lymph nodes of a saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) using routine culture techniques in spite of histologic evidence of high numbers of acid-fast bacteria in these tissues. Two newborn domestic sheep were fed the ground intestinal tissue containing acid-fast bacteria and the progression of the experimental disease was followed by fecal culture, immunodiffusion (AGID) and lymphocyte stimulation (LST) tests. One experimentally infected sheep developed progressive clinical illness 1 yr posti

Metabolism and evaporative heat loss in the dik-dik antelope (Rhynchotragus kirki).

1. Under controlled conditions, the rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) respiratory frequency, evaporative water loss, heat balance, rectal (Trec) and surface temperatures were determined in the dik-dik antelopes at ambient temperatures (Ta) ranging from 1 to 44 degrees C. 2. The thermal neutral zone was found to be between 24 and 35 degrees C. 3. Respiratory frequency ranged between 27 and 630 breaths/min. 4. At a Ta of 44 degrees C, 95% of the heat produced by the dik-dik was lost via respiratory evaporation. Despite an increase in Trec, cutaneous evaporation did not increase. 5. During panting

Molecular Prevalence of Cyclospora spp. in Tibetan Antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) in China.

Cyclospora spp. is a globally distributed foodborne intestinal parasite with potential zoonotic risk. The Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii), an iconic wildlife species in China, is classified as a national first-class protected animal. However, data on Cyclospora spp. infections in Tibetan antelope remain limited. This study employed polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of Cyclospora spp. on 503 fecal samples collected from Tibetan antelope in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regio

Disease Risks for Restoring Endangered Sahelo-Saharan Antelope: A Literature Review.

In 1994, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals identified six species of Sahelo-Saharan antelope in immediate danger of extinction. Several of these species are now subjects of large-scale conservation efforts, including reintroductions and population reinforcements across their native ranges. However, disease-related mortalities can cause major setbacks, and wildlife-livestock interfaces are widely thought to have contributed to disease and mortality events in translocated animals. We reviewed 202 English and French publications spanning 20 years (2000-2020)

Clinical Coxiella burnetii infection in sable and roan antelope in South Africa.

Various zoonotic microorganisms cause reproductive problems such as abortions and stillbirths, leading to economic losses on farms, particularly within livestock. In South Africa, bovine brucellosis is endemic in cattle, and from 2013-2018, outbreaks of Brucella melitensis occurred in sable. Coxiella burnetii, the agent responsible for the zoonotic disease known as Q-fever and/or coxiellosis, also causes reproductive problems and infects multiple domestic animal species worldwide, including humans. However, little is known of this disease in wildlife. With the expansion of the wildlife industr

Investigation of Brucella melitensis in Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger) in South Africa.

In this study, Brucella melitensis infection in sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) was investigated on two wildlife ranches in South Africa over a 12-year period in order to determine the origin of the outbreaks and the role of livestock in maintaining the disease. Retrospective data were obtained from farm records and interviews as well as samples tested from different disease scenarios and clinical settings. On one ranch, 10 of 74 sable tested seropositive for B. melitensis in 2004 but were certified clear of infection after no further brucellosis cases were detected following repeated serol

Ibex-associated malignant catarrhal fever in a bongo antelope (Tragelaphus euryceros).

A 4-yr-old male bongo antelope (Tragelaphus euryceros) died after an acute clinical course involving a febrile illness, anorexia, lethargy, minor oculonasal discharge, and diarrhea. Histologic lesions were compatible with malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed an amplified region of a herpesviral DNA polymerase gene sequence nearly identical to that of a MCF virus previously identified in Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana). The bongo had been housed across from an exhibit containing Nubian ibex that tested positive for MCF viral antibodies by competitive inhibition

Evaluation of Brucella abortus strain RB51 and strain 19 in pronghorn antelope.

Free-roaming elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area remain the only wildlife reservoirs for Brucella abortus in the United States, and the large number of animals and a lack of holding facilities make it unreasonable to individually vaccinate each animal. Therefore, oral delivery is being proposed as a possible option to vaccinate these wild ungulates. One of the main problems associated with oral vaccination is the potential exposure of nontarget species to the vaccines. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two Brucella vaccines, strain 19 (S19) and the rough strai

The Palearctic blackfly Simulium equinum (Diptera: Simuliidae) as a biting pest of captive nyala antelopes (Tragelaphus angasii).

Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are cosmopolitan nuisance pests of great economic importance as well as vectors of many pathogens. After reports of massive blackfly biting of captive nyala antelopes in the Vienna Zoo, Austria, this study aimed to identify the species causing multiple skin lesions on the antelope hosts. The Palearctic species Simulium equinum, belonging to the medically and veterinary important Wilhelmia subgenus, was identified as the most likely causative agent. Barcoding and maximum likelihood analysis supported morphological species identification and highlighted the compl

Environmental cues and individuality shape diel and seasonal antelope behaviour in African drylands.

Large herbivores play a central role in dryland ecosystems, influencing vegetation dynamics, nutrient cycling, and trophic interactions. While they are adapted to cope with harsh climates, their persistence is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. However, the behavioural strategies they use to cope with these combined environmental challenges remain understudied. Using multi-year accelerometer data from springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), and common eland (Taurotragus oryx) in northern Namibia, we examined diel and seasonal behaviour in r

Complicated urethral rupture and scrotal urethrostomy in a Bongo antelope (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci).

A 4-yr-old, 300-kg male Bongo antelope presented a fluctuant swelling on the ventral abdomen surrounding the penis, which was confirmed later as compatible with urethral rupture. Initial treatment included broad-spectrum antibiotic and radical surgical debridement. Total prepuce and partial penile amputation with orchidectomy was performed and normal micturition was restored. At a later stage, when the extent of the lesion was controlled, a permanent scrotal urethrostomy was performed. Complete healing by second intention was achieved 2 mo after the last surgery. Although the outcome was very

Blackbuck antelope (Antilope cervicapra), a new host for Psoroptes cuniculi (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Information was requested on the cause of extensive lesions and death of a blackbuck antelope (Antilope cervicapra). Psoroptes cuniculi, the ear mite of domestic rabbits, was identified as the cause of the lesions. Death of the antelope was attributed to a secondary bacterial infection. This is the first report of P. cuniculi on blackbuck antelope. The potential impact of these mites on blackbuck antelope and other exotics in Texas is unknown.

First Report of Mycobacterium bovis and Nocardia spp. Co-Infection in a Roan Antelope.

Nocardia spp. and Mycobacterium spp. are known etiological agents of granulomatous pulmonary infections in humans and animals; however, co-infections involving these pathogens have not previously been reported in veterinary medicine. This paper describes the first documented case of co-infection with Mycobacterium bovis and Nocardia spp. in a captive roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus). The animal was a 9-year-old female roan antelope from a safari park in northern Italy that died suddenly with a one-month history of weight loss. Post-mortem examination revealed severe, diffuse, chronic granul

Blood gas changes during panting in a small East African antelope, the dik-dik.

Five adult male dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii) were exposed in a climatic chamber to an air temperature of 45 degrees C. Measurements were made of rectal temperature (Tre) and respiratory frequency (f) and arterial blood samples taken before and during heat exposure were analyzed for pH, PCO2 and PO2. During exposure, Tre and f increased in all animals. In the first 80 min dik-dik displayed thermal tachypnea and minor changes in blood gases. Continued exposure lead to hyperpnea accompanied by a fall in PaCO2 and a rise in pH. PaCO2 at first fell and then increased toward or above control levels. The

Hydrogen sulfide-mediated cardiovascular protection involved in the antihypertensive effect of the saiga antelope horn.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Saiga antelope horn (SAH), derived from the male Saiga tatarica Linnaeus, has been used in China for millennia to treat hyperpyretic convulsions and hypertension-related diseases. Clarifying its effectiveness and mechanism of action are essential because of its limited availability. This study will guide the investigation of alternative resources. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study investigated the short- and long-term antihypertensive effectiveness of SAH in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and the relation of its mechanism of action to H2S (hydrogen sulfide),
