Uptake and Accumulation of Nephrotoxic and Carcinogenic Aristolochic Acids in Food Crops Grown in Aristolochia clematitis-Contaminated Soil and Water.

Emerging evidence has suggested aristolochic acids (AAs) are linked to the development of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a chronic renal disease affecting numerous farmers living in the Balkan peninsula. However, the pathway by which AAs enter the human food chain and cause kidney disease remains poorly understood. Using our previously developed analytical method with high sensitivity and selectivity (Chan, W.; Lee, K. C.; Liu, N.; Cai, Z. J. Chromatogr. A 2007, 1164, 113-119), we quantified AAs in lettuce, tomato, and spring onion grown in AA-contaminated soil and culture medium. Our study

A PCR-lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (PCR-LFA) for detecting Aristolochia species, the plants responsible for aristolochic acid nephropathy.

Aristolochic acids (AAs), which are strong carcinogens, have caused dietary supplements with Aristolochia plants to be discontinued worldwide. Therefore, the development of a method to identify these herbs is critical for customer safety. To support the regulation of Aristolochia-free products, a PCR coupled with lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (PCR-LFA) that is specific to the nucleotide signature in plastid rbcL gene region of Aristolochia species was developed to detect Aristolochia plants and related herbal products. Triplex primers (A397F, C357F and R502) were designed based on s

Elevated CO2 alters age-dependent variation in secondary metabolites, C/N ratio and growth of perennial herb, Aristolochia contorta.

Understanding how growth and defense strategies of perennial plants change across developmental stages in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 is critical for predicting adaptive responses and ecological interactions under future climate scenarios. In this study, Aristolochia contorta, a perennial herb, was examined across age groups (1-, 2-, and 10-year-old plants), under ambient and elevated CO2 (540 ppm, simulating RCP 4.5). Growth traits, carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios, and concentrations of secondary metabolites in both above- and below-ground tissues were measured to evaluate developmen

Intersecting Pathways: Exploring the Link Between Balkan Endemic Nephropathy and Distribution of Aristolochia clematitis , Air Pollution and Pliocene Lignite Coal.

Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) is a chronic kidney disease with high morbidity and mortality in certain rural areas of Southeast Europe. While the exposure to Aristolochic Acids (AAs), phytotoxins from Aristolochia clematitis plant, has been confirmed as the direct cause, the potential roles of carcinogenic compounds and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) originating from air pollution and Pliocene lignite coal deposits remain insufficiently explored. We applied Monte Carlo simulations to examine the co-occurrence of BEN settlements with (1) the predicted presence of A. clematitis plant

Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies.

The ecological interactions of the iconic Troidini swallowtail butterflies and their host plants remain largely unknown, despite the popularity of these butterflies in collections and their significance as conservation flagships. We sought to elucidate the ecological interactions of perhaps the least known life-stage of the butterflies: that of the egg with its host plant. We recorded oviposition location and egg survival rates for Troides helena, Troides amphrysus and Pachliopta antiphus on their host plants Aristolochia acuminata and Aristolochia cf. foveolata through systematic monitoring o

Chemical constituents, anti-rheumatic potential, and anti-inflammatory properties of the aqueous extract from the aerial parts of Aristolochia esperanzae Kuntze.

Although Aristolochia plants remain controversial due to their toxicity, this group of perianth-bearing plants, which includes the medicinal species Aristolochia esperanzae, is among the most relevant from an ethnobotanical perspective. All parts of A. esperanzae are used in popular medicine in the form of infusion for the treatment of rheumatism. Thus, the anti-inflammatory properties and the chemical composition of the aqueous extract (AELS) obtained from A. esperanzae aerial parts were examined in this research. AELS was analyzed using chromatographic, hyphenated, spectrometric techniques,

Assessment of the In Vitro Antischistosomal Activities of the Extracts and Compounds from Solidago Microglossa DC (Asteraceae) and Aristolochia Cymbifera Mart. & Zucc. (Aristolochiaceae).

Schistosomiasis, caused by helminth flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, is a neglected tropical disease that afflicts over 230 million people worldwide. Currently, treatment is achieved with only one drug, praziquantel (PZQ). In this regard, the roots of Solidago microglossa (Asteraceae) and Aristolochia cymbifera (Aristolochiaceae) are popularly used as anthelmintic. Despite their medicinal use against helminthiasis, such as schistosomiasis, A. cymbifera, and S. microglossa have not been evaluated against S. mansoni. Then, in this work, the in vitro antischistosomal activity of the crude extr

Efficient separation of aristolochic acid I from Caulis aristolochiae manshuriensis (Guan-mu-tong) with copper mediated magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer.

Screening bioactive compounds from natural products is one of the most effective ways for new drug research and development. However, obtaining a single extract component on a large scale and with high purity from a complex matrix is still an arduous and challenging task. Herein, one metal mediated magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (mMIP) was rationally designed and prepared for specifically capturing Aristolochic acid I (AAI). The preparation was done with copper(II) as binding pivot, (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane as functional monomer, and Fe3O4 as core, by a one-step sol-gel method.
