Progressive hemiosteoporosis on the paretic side and increased bone mineral density in the nonparetic arm the first year after severe stroke.

Fractures are a common and serious complication after stroke and the risk of hip fractures among stroke patients is 2 to 4 times greater than among other elderly people. The aim of this study was to investigate prospectively the change in bone mineral density (BMD) after severe stroke and to study the association between motor impairment, disability and the development of hemiosteoporosis. The study comprised 24 stroke patients, with no persistent paresis from previous strokes or previous osteoporotic fractures, included 1 month after stroke onset. BMD, motor function, ambulation and activitie

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of an Osseodensification System for Improvement in Bone Density After Delayed Implant Placement: Protocol for a Single-Arm Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed placement of dental implants often leads to bone resorption, particularly in the posterior region, compromising implant placement. Osseodensification uses specialized rotary instruments to compact and densify bone and may improve bone quality and implant stability. However, its effectiveness in delayed implant placement has not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of osseodensification in increasing bone volume and density at regions scheduled for delayed implant placement and to evaluate its effect on implant stability and osseointeg

L- shape symphyseal autogenous bone block for alveolar ridge augmentation in anterior maxilla and mandible, a prospective single arm clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar ridge augmentations are challenging procedures in dental implantology, especially in esthetic zone. 3D alveolar defects can be treated by guided bone regeneration (GBR), distraction osteogenesis, or bone blocks. This study introduces a new technique for 3D-alveolar ridge augmentation by using L-shape autogenous symphyseal bone block. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess both horizontal and vertical alveolar bone augmentation for severe atrophied anterior maxilla and mandible, using an L- shape autogenous bone block harvested from the symphysis. Shwachman-Diamond syndrome with clonal interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 20 in bone marrow: haematological features, prognosis and genomic instability.

In Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS), deletion of the long arm of chromosome 20, del(20)(q), often acquired in bone marrow (BM), may imply a lower risk of developing myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukaemia (MDS/AML), due to the loss of the EIF6 gene. The genes L3MBTL1 and SGK2, also on chromosome 20, are in a cluster of imprinted genes, and their loss implies dysregulation of BM function. We report here the results of array comparative genomic hybridization (a-CGH) performed on BM DNA of six patients which confirmed the consistent loss of EIF6 gene. Interestingly, array single nucleoti

Feasibility and placement accuracy of a sensor-guided intraosseous device with an automated stop in a small-bone rat cadaver model: a single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid intraosseous (IO) access is critical in emergency care when venous access is not feasible. IO access is particularly prone to error in small animals and human neonates with narrow medullary cavities. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and placement accuracy of a novel sensor-guided IO drilling device with an automatic stop mechanism in a rat cadaver model. METHODS: Seven thawed Sprague-Dawley rat cadavers underwent 14 tibial insertions by a single experienced operator using a standardised protocol. Placement was assessed by computed tomography (CT), with successful i

Effect of changing the acquisition trajectory of the 3D C-arm (CBCT) on image quality in spine surgery: experimental study using an artificial bone model.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative 3D imaging using cone-beam CT (CBCT) provides improved assessment of implant position and reduction in spine surgery, is used for navigated surgical techniques, and therefore leads to improved quality of care. However, in some cases the image quality is not sufficient to correctly assess pedicle screw position and reduction, especially due to metal artifacts. The aim of this study was to investigate whether changing the acquisition trajectory of the CBCT in relation to the pedicle screw position during dorsal instrumentation of the spine can reduce metal artifacts an

A single arm phase II study of bone-targeted Sn-117 m-DTPA in symptomatic castration-resistant prostate cancer with skeletal metastases.

BACKGROUND: Several bone-seeking radionuclides have been developed for palliation of metastatic bone pain since 1956, however, so far radium-223 dichloride is the first and only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved targeted alpha therapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) based on ALSYMPCA phase 3 study. While radium-223 does improve pain and overall survival outcomes, the improvement can come at the expense of side effects such as bone marrow toxicity. The development of new and better treatment with long-standing pain relief is clearly an unmet medical need.

Evaluating AI-generated CBCT-based synthetic CT images for target delineation in palliative treatments of pelvic bone metastasis at conventional C-arm linacs.

PURPOSE: One-table treatments with treatment imaging, preparation and delivery occurring at one treatment couch, could increase patients' comfort and throughput for palliative treatments. On regular C-arm linacs, however, cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging quality is currently insufficient. Therefore, our goal was to assess the suitability of AI-generated CBCT based synthetic CT (sCT) images for target delineation and treatment planning for palliative radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCTs and planning CT-scans of 22 female patients with pelvic bone metastasis were included. For each CBCT, a cor

Focused Ultrasound and RadioTHERapy for non-invasive palliative pain treatment in patients with bone metastasis: a study protocol for the three armed randomized controlled FURTHER trial.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP), caused by bone metastases, is a common complication of cancer and strongly impairs quality of life (QoL). External beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is the current standard of care for treatment of CIBP. However, approximately 45% of patients have no adequate pain response after EBRT. Magnetic resonance image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) may improve pain palliation in this patient population. The main objective of this trial was to compare MR-HIFU, EBRT, and MR-HIFU + EBRT for the palliative treatment of bone metastases. METHODS/DESIGN

Clinical Outcomes of Bone-Anchored Versus Socket-Suspended Prostheses in Individuals With Transfemoral Amputation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Two-Arm Comparative Studies.

Bone-anchored prostheses (BAP) provide an alternative to traditional socket-suspended prostheses (SSP) for individuals with transfemoral amputation (TFA) by addressing socket-related complications. While most previous studies, primarily single-arm trials, report positive outcomes with BAP, these findings may be overestimated due to lower preoperative baseline function among individuals using SSP prior to BAP implantation. This review aims to offer a more balanced comparison of functional and clinical outcomes between BAP and SSP by focusing exclusively on two-arm comparative studies. A systema
