The humanitarian impact of armed conflict remains a significant international issue, with an estimated 2 billion people residing in fragile or conflict-affected settings. Despite increasing attention and study of armed conflict and its impact on human populations, few studies have evaluated the methods necessary to assess such relationships: how to use disaggregated and granular conflict data, measure and operationalize conflict, etc. In this study, we identify important considerations for conducting armed conflict and health research, including how data structures and decisions might impact c

Background: Armed conflicts affect mental health. In Colombia, many communities have been victims of armed conflict and multiple social inequalities and injustices for more than six decades. Our research explored the social determinants of mental health in fifteen municipalities affected by the armed conflict in Montes de María, Colombia. Method: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was conducted. In the quantitative component, we assessed mental health (PHQ-4 and DASS-21), social support (Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey - MOS), and sense of community (Brief Sense of Communi

Armed conflict weakens immunization, surveillance, and socioeconomic resilience, increasing measles risk during and after war. Protecting routine vaccination in crises is a core emergency response.

Armed conflict is an escalating threat to global food security yet its impact on cropland dynamics is poorly understood at global scale. Here we combine annual high-resolution cropland maps (2000-2020) with more than 460,000 conflict events across 155 countries to assess how armed conflicts affect cropland loss and food security. By 2020, conflict-exposed areas within 5 km of conflict events covered only 3% of global land but contained 6% of global cropland, indicating disproportionate exposure of agricultural land to conflict. Difference-in-differences estimates show that conflict exposure ca

BACKGROUND: Armed conflicts disrupt health services in nearby regions. While the impact of short-terms wars on hospital activities has been studied, long-term effects of wars on Emergency Department (ED) patterns remain unclear. This study assessed the effect of conflict, followed by organizational changes within the hospital and population evacuation on the profile of ED visits near a war zone. METHODS: A time-series analysis was conducted at Galilee Medical Center (GMC), 10-kilometers from Israel’s northern border. Since the onset of Israeli-Hamas war on October 7th, 2023, GMC has operated u

Forced migration is a result of variable changes, including human-made factors, environmental factors or both. Climate change has been a significant cause of increased forced migration in Sudan. The prolonged drought attributed to climate change affects Sudanese citizens, with 80% of the population relying on agriculture and pastoralism as their main source of income. Since April 2023, the conflict has displaced over 14.5 million people. Four million have sought safety in neighbouring countries. The refugee camps lack essential resources, and the displaced people face a health crisis, with out

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) particularly against women is unfortunately common during armed conflicts. No rigorous and comprehensive empirical work has documented the extent of GBV and its consequences that took place during the two years of devastating armed conflict in Northern Ethiopia. This study aims to assess GBV and its consequences in war-torn areas of northern Ethiopia.
METHODS: We used a qualitative method augmented by quantitative method to enroll research participants. We conducted in-depth interviews to characterize the lived experiences of GBV survivors. All intervie

OBJECTIVES: Prolonged armed conflict may constrain efforts to address non-communicable disease in some settings. We assessed the impact of armed conflict on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among civilians in low/middle-income countries (LMICs).
METHODS: In February 2019, we performed a systematic review searching Medline, Embase, PsychINFO, Global Health and Web of Science without language or date restrictions. We included adult, civilian populations in LMICs. Outcomes included CVDs and diabetes, and eight clinical and behavioural factors (blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids, tobacco, alc

BACKGROUND: Ampullary adenocarcinoma is a rare periampullary malignancy for which pancreaticoduodenectomy (the Whipple procedure) represents the only potentially curative surgical intervention. This complex operation is universally performed in high-volume tertiary hospitals with dedicated hepatopancreatobiliary surgical teams and a full intensive care infrastructure. We report the first documented case of a Whipple procedure performed in a field hospital in an active conflict zone.

What are the health effects of violent conflict? It is well known that wars kill civilians away from the battlefield and long after the fighting has stopped. Yet why this happens remains only partially understood. While we have good evidence that factors such as the destruction of infrastructure, political neglect, and the out-migration of health workers - what may be called supply-side factors - negatively affect health outcomes, we know much less about how violence shapes the attitudes and behavior towards healthcare use among civilians exposed to violent conflict - what may be called demand

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict fundamentally alters trauma care structures. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 created unprecedented challenges for traumatic brain injury (TBI) management, requiring rapid adaptation under extreme conditions.
OBJECTIVES: To perform a forensic medical comparison of TBI management quality between pre-conflict (2012-2021) and conflict (2022-2024) periods, identifying factors affecting care and proposing improvements.
METHODS: A retrospective forensic analysis of 3143 cases from Ukrainian bureaus was conducted. Statistical analysis included Chi-square, Studen

Armed conflict exposure is associated with multiple mental health problems. However, more needs to be known about the differential effects of particular modalities of armed conflict violence and war methods on mental health. This study a) examined the modalities of violence employed in the Colombian armed conflict and b) assessed their association with mental health problems in armed conflict survivors. Using armed conflict data from the Colombian Armed Conflict Events Information System, we identified three violence modalities: armed confrontations, indiscriminate attacks, and selective viole

The earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria in February, 2023, have caused further devastation in northwest Syria-an area already affected by protracted armed conflict, mass forced displacement, and inadequate health and humanitarian provision. The earthquake damaged infrastructure supporting water, sanitation, and hygiene, and health-care facilities. The disruptions to epidemiological surveillance and ongoing disease control measures resulting from the earthquake will accelerate and expand ongoing and new outbreaks of many communicable diseases including measles, cholera, tuberculosis, and leishmani

BACKGROUND: The displacement of populations as the result of an armed conflict generally entails a worsening of the living and health conditions of those undergoing such a displacement. This paper is aimed at analyzing the health-related needs perceived by men and women displaced by the armed conflict and their main strategies to address those needs.
METHODS: A qualitative study was carried out by means of semi-structured individual interviews to 31 displaced men and women in the transition stage. A narrative analysis of the contents was conducted, segmenting the information by age and sex. T

This article of the role of the US military in humanitarian crises focuses on the utilization of medical resources, concentrating on the impact on the pediatric age group. The US military possesses unique capabilities that enable rapid delivery of supplies, deployment of medical teams, infrastructure support, and security operations, all supporting the needs of complex operational environments. Emergencies range from rapid responses to domestic and global natural disasters, to those involving complex humanitarian emergencies involving armed conflict. The employment of these resources requires

The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan has resulted in a deepening humanitarian crisis with significant implications for the country's health system, threatening its collapse. This article examines the destruction, disruption, and disastrous consequences inflicted upon Sudan's health system. The conflict has led to the severe compromise of healthcare facilities, with only one-third of hospitals in conflict zones operational. Artillery attacks, forced militarization, power outages, and shortages of medical supplies and personnel have further crippled the health system. The exodus of health workers
