Management of residual deformity in patients with Charcot Neuro-osteoarthropathy represents a therapeutic challenge. The midfoot is the most frequently affected area, leading to the typical rocker-bottom deformity. Surgical exostectomy in these areas of bony prominences offers a non-reconstructive method to remove pressure and allow ulcers to heal or prevent their development when conservative measures fail. This review includes a total of 11 studies, aimed to assess the outcome of exostectomies in the prevention and recurrence of ulcers under the bony prominence in patients with Charcot midfo

Ankle and hindfoot Charcot neuroarthropathy is a complex problem and should be carefully assessed and managed to prevent morbidity and limb loss. Circular frames offer a range of options to address a wide variety of clinical situations and also complement internal fixation techniques. Multidisciplinary care and specialist skills to provide frame treatment are essential for a successful outcome.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. However, there are few cases of Charcot Neuro-osteoarthropathy (CN) caused by rheumatoid diseases in clinical reports. It is not easy to pay attention to the diagnosis of CN in the complications of rheumatoid disease, which greatly increases the probability of misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. This case reported a rare complication of rheumatoid arthritis, Charcot arthritis, and the molecular mechanism and diagnosis and treatment of CN caused by RA were systematically discussed.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 79-year-old woman

The Charcot foot is an uncommon complication of neuropathy in diabetes. It is a disabling and devastating condition. The etiology of the Charcot foot is unknown, but it is characterized by acute inflammation with collapse of the foot and/or the ankle. Although the cause of this potentially debilitating condition is not known, it is generally accepted that the components of neuropathy that lead to foot complications must exist. When it is not detected early, a severe deformity will result in a secondary ulceration, infection, and amputation. Immobilization in the early stages is the key for suc

Charcot foot is a rapidly progressive disease process occurring in those with peripheral neuropathy. The disease is frequently misdiagnosed resulting in a delay of appropriate treatment, worsening the outcome. We present the hallmarks for diagnosis of Charcot foot based on the clinical examination and imaging studies. We provide a simple algorithm based on evidence and experience for the investigation of the foot when Charcot arthropathy is suspected. Additionally, we propose a new classification that accounts for the degree of complications in the Charcot joint. This new system considers defo

The diabetic Charcot foot is a major limb-threatening complication of long-term diabetes mellitus and neuropathy. Although first described over 100 years ago, we are still lacking definitive studies regarding its prevalence in this population, precise etiology, or most effective treatments. Trauma in the presence of peripheral sensory neuropathy and abundant arterial perfusion seem to be the primary causal factors leading to this severe foot deformity. Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of osteoarthropathy allows the destructive phase of this disorder to continue with resultant further destruct

CASE: Three patients aged 29, 30, and 38 with diabetes mellitus presented with medial tibial plateau fractures after the insidious onset of knee pain. All were treated with open reduction and internal fixation that failed early and required revision surgery. None were initially diagnosed with a neuropathic knee. In retrospect, the clinical scenario and fracture patterns were similar and should raise suspicion for charcot arthropathy.
CONCLUSION: Atraumatic pain with a progressive deformity and fragmentation of the medial plateau are concerning for Charcot knee. Correct diagnosis is crucial to

Charcot neuroarthropathy is characterized by progressive joint destruction resulting from the loss of pain sensation. The most common manifestation is Charcot foot associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, which is a serious complication that often leads to amputation due to ulcers or infection. Early diagnosis is challenging but crucial as it strongly influences treatment outcomes. Off-loading is the cornerstone of management, and surgical intervention should be considered in advanced cases. The primary goals of treatment are to minimize deformity, prevent ulceration, and preserve the f

Neuropathic deformities of the lesser toes refer to a variety of neuromuscular disorders in which a stiff lesser toe deformity is encountered. Claw toes, hammer toes, and mallet toes can be found. Each deformity is better described as which joint of a particular toe is in a flexed or extended position. This information guides the surgeon to which joint should be addressed and what additional soft tissue procedure may be needed. Interphalangeal joint fusions are the procedure of choice, together with extensor or flexor tenotomies. Good results can be expected, with low revision rates.

Charcot neuropathic arthropathy (CN) is a devastating condition resulting in non-reducible foot deformity that places patients with distal peripheral neuropathy at risk for the development of chronic neuropathic foot ulcers, major lower extremity amputation, and even death. The condition is often misdiagnosed early in its presentation because of a lack of knowledge among members of the medical community. Consequently, initial therapies for the condition are fewer and patients who present in more advanced stages of the condition are more difficult to manage. We now understand that CN is a multi

BACKGROUND: Charcot neuroarthropathy (CNA), commonly known as Charcot foot, is one of the most debilitating complications of diabetes mellitus. Patients with plantar ulcer and osteomyelitis (OM) due to Charcot foot represent a high cost for health systems and society in general. The amputation risk for ulcerated Charcot patients is 12 times higher than general population under 65 years old.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this article we present the CNA treatment protocol we use in our center. We also make a detailed description of the surgical technique «single stage surgery» with circular external

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present work was to report two new clinical cases on Charcot spinal arthropathy (Charcot spine) and to identify and review all cases reported in the literature since 1978.
METHOD: In parallel with a description of the clinical and radiological features of two new cases, we performed a detailed literature review after searching the PubMed and Pascal databases with the following keywords "Charcot spine", "Charcot spinal arthropathy" and "neuropathic arthropathy of the spine".
RESULTS: We identified 36 publications comprising a total of 109 cases of Charcot spine. Cha

Charcot neuroarthropathy has been recognised for over 130 years and yet it remains a major cause of morbidity for patients with diabetes mellitus and a continuing challenge for physicians. It is rare but it seems to be increasing in prevalence and this provides hope that with larger studies it will soon be possible to clarify the natural history and optimal treatment regimens. The underlying cause is thought to be trauma in a neuropathic foot that leads to a complex series of pathological processes culminating in bone and joint destruction and subsequent deformity. The acute reaction is often

Charcot's joint, also known as neuropathic osteoarthropathy, is a common complication of diabetes that often is unrecognized and misdiagnosed. It may be present in up to 35% of patients with diabetic neuropathy. This disorder causes progressive destruction of weight bearing joints leading to dislocations, fractures, and deformities. We report a case of Charcot's joint in a 55-year-old man with type two diabetes. He presented with unilateral foot and ankle swelling, foot pain, warmth, and erythema. A magnetic resonance image of his foot revealed changes consistent with a Charcot's joint. Treatm

Neuropathic arthropathy (Charcot's joint) is a relatively painless, progressive and degenerative condition due to underlying neurologic deficits. Although a variety of neurologic disorders may produce this arthropathy, diabetes mellitus has become the most common cause. In diabetes, the foot and ankle are the sites most often involved, particularly the tarsometatarsal and tarsal joints. In addition to neuropathy, trauma is an essential factor in producing the arthropathy.
