The Effectiveness of Ultrasound Visual Biofeedback in Articulation Therapy for Children and Adolescents With Speech Sound Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders (SSD) may compromise speech intelligibility in children and adolescents, impacting communication, social interactions and academic performance. Ultrasound visual biofeedback (U-VBF) has emerged as a promising tool for articulation therapy, providing real-time tongue movement visualization, yet its evidence base requires updating given methodological advancements. AIMS: This systematic review and meta-analysis updates the evidence for the effectiveness of the use of U-VBF in improving articulation accuracy for paediatric SSD, synthesizing recent studies with

Randomized controlled trial comparing Parent Led Therapist Supervised Articulation Therapy (PLAT) with routine intervention for children with speech disorders associated with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: A total of 68% of pre-school children with cleft palate have speech problems requiring speech therapy. There is a lack of access to regular targeted therapy. Parent training leads to positive outcomes in early communication skills in cleft palate and non-cleft speech disorders. Connected health has been used to address inadequate access to therapy, providing intervention to those who would not otherwise receive therapy. AIMS: To evaluate the speech, activity and participation outcomes of Parent Led, Therapist Supervised, Articulation Therapy (PLAT) compared with routine speech the

Three-dimensional retrospective comparison of disc repositioning, condylar remodelling, and mandibular symmetry following traditional versus digital articulation techniques in patients with temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: With advancements in computer technology, digital mandibular repositioning techniques are increasingly utilised in the management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This study aimed to compare the differences in joint structure restoration between traditional and digital articulation techniques. METHODS: Two groups of patients with TMD (40 in each group) received traditional or digital articulation. An occlusal splint was fabricated and administered to each patient. Imaging data were collected prior to the articulation process and after the patients wore the splint for six mon

[Study on brain mechanism of rehabilitation training of articulation disorder in cleft lip and palate patients based on functional magnetic resonance imaging].

The cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common craniofacial malformations in humans. We collected functional magnetic resonance data of 23 CLP patients before rehabilitation training (Bclp) and 23 CLP patients after rehabilitation training (Aclp), who were performing Chinese character pronunciation tasks, and performed brain activation analysis to explore the changes of brain mechanism in CLP patients after articulation disorder rehabilitation training. The study found that Aclp group had significant activation in the motor cortex, Broca area, Wernicke area and cerebellum. While the

An investigation of the efficacy of oral myofunctional therapy as a precursor to articulation therapy for pre-first grade children.

This study investigated the assumption that oral myofunctional services might facilitate remediation of articulation disorders. Subjects were ten 6-year-old elementary school children who exhibited both tongue-thrust behaviors and articulation errors. All subjects had equal service time for a 14-week period, half receiving articulation services only and the other half receiving oral myofunctional services prior to and in conjunction with articulation services. Results showed that children in both programs made essentially equal progress in correcting placement of tongue-tip sounds, remediating

Articulation-Function-Associated Cortical Developmental Changes in Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common craniofacial malformations. Overall, 40-80% of CLP patients have varying degrees of articulation problems after palatoplasty. Previous studies revealed abnormal articulation-related brain function in CLP patients. However, the association between articulation disorders and cortical structure development in CLP patients remains unclear. Twenty-six CLP adolescents (aged 5-14 years; mean 8.88 years; female/male 8/18), twenty-three CLP adults (aged 18-35 years; mean 23.35 years; female/male 6/17), thirty-seven healthy adolescents (aged 5-16 year

[The value of phonological analysis in speech therapy].

INTRODUCTION: Phonological analysis is a system for assessing children's speech that was introduced by Ingram in 1976. Despite being acknowledged as one of the essential elements for understanding speech therapy intervention in speech disorders, it is not a wholly generalised practice due to the difficulties involved and the shortage of standardised instruments for performing it. DEVELOPMENT: Here, we examine the impact of phonological analysis on speech therapy intervention and the history of the instruments that have been developed over the years to perform it, both in English and in Spanis

A Preliminary Investigation of Within-Word Silent Intervals Produced by Children With and Without Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

PURPOSE: The categorization of silent intervals during speech production is necessary for accurate measurement of articulation rate and pauses. The primary purpose of this preliminary study was to examine the within-word silent interval associated with the stop closure in word-final stop consonants produced by children with and without neurodevelopmental disorders. METHOD: Seven children diagnosed with either cerebral palsy or Down syndrome (i.e., children with neurodevelopmental disorders) and eight typically developing children produced a reading passage. Participants were between the ages

Change in velopharyngeal valving after speech therapy in cleft palate patients. A videonasopharyngoscopic and multi-view videofluoroscopic study.

Thirty-one cleft palate patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency and compensatory articulation in association with hypernasality after palate closure were studied. Videonasopharyngoscopy and multi-view videofluoroscopy were performed to all patients before and after speech therapy for correcting compensatory articulation. The ratios of movement of velopharyngeal structures were significantly increased after compensatory articulation had been corrected. Furthermore, the size of the gap at the velopharyngeal sphincter during closure was significantly reduced. The results in this study support

Activating articulation skills through theraplay.

Speech Theraplay, a method of remediation for children with articulation disorders, is described. The approach is based on parent-child interactions that are postulated to activate articulation acquisition. These interactions between parent and child were duplicated and intensified in the clinical setting. Target phonemes were embedded into spontaneous interactive play, both in isolation and in meaningful exchange. The results of a six-week study indicate improvement in the articulation abilities of six children with this method.

The outcome of long-term follow-up after palatoplasty.

The speech outcome was studied retrospectively in 140 cleft-palate patients who underwent push-back palatoplasty. Velopharyngeal function and articulation disorders were evaluated serially at 4, 7, 10, and more than 10 years of age. On comparison of velopharyngeal function between 4 years of age and the most recent review (>10 years), it was unchanged in 90 patients (64.3 percent), whereas it showed deterioration in 14 patients and showed improvement in 8 patients. The other 28 patients underwent pharyngeal flap surgery; this group also included patients with functional deterioration. Changes

Electropalatography in the description and treatment of speech disorders in five children with cerebral palsy.

Some children with cerebral palsy have articulation disorders that are resistant to conventional speech therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the visual feedback method of electropalatography (EPG) could be an effective tool for treating five children (mean age of 9.4 years) with dysarthria and cerebral palsy and to explore whether training improved the posteriorly placed articulation of the Swedish dental/alveolar target consonants /t/, /d/, /n/ and /s/ produced in different positions. An EPG analysis was conducted and some of the data were combined with a perceptual analy

Oral motor treatment: Effects of therapeutic feeding on articulatory skills.

The prevalence of feeding problems is over 20% in typically developing children and over 70% in children with developmental disabilities. Oral motor therapy targeting feeding disorders may have secondary/indirect positive effects on co-morbid articulation disorders in young children. The purpose of this study was to examine such indirect effects. Seven young children with feeding problems were assessed via a known standardized articulation test upon admission for feeding therapy. They received a 4-week oral motor treatment protocol toward the development of age-appropriate feeding and swallowi
