Aspartate aminotransferase activity in human healthy and inflamed dental pulps.

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) seems to be an important mediator of inflammatory processes. Its role in the progression and detection of inflammatory periodontal disease has been increasingly recognized in recent years. In the present study AST activity was analyzed in normal healthy human dental pulps, in reversible pulpitis, and in irreversible pulpitis. Enzymatic AST activity showed that the control values for the healthy pulps were 4.8 +/- 0.7 units/mg of pulp tissue. In reversible pulpitis specimens the AST activity increased to 7.98 +/- 2.1 units/mg of pulp tissue. In irreversible pulp

Determination of aspartate aminotransferase isoenzymes in hepatic diseases--preliminary findings.

The study sought to establish a relationship between the AST isoenzyme levels in serum and degree of hepatic damage, by using a new and simple immunochemical method for the differential determination of the isoenzymes. Sixty-nine patients with various hepatic diseases were studied. During hepatic damage, cytoplasmic isoenzyme (s-AST) is found in greater quantities than mitochondrial isoenzyme (m-AST), but the m-AST level increases to a greater extent in acute liver diseases. However, m-AST in alcoholic hepatitis is higher than expected from the total AST (t-AST) values. The ratio of m-AST to t

Aspartate aminotransferase activity and isoenzyme proportions in human liver tissues.

Aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) activity and the distribution of its isoenzymes in human liver were examined. Rabbit antiserum against porcin soluble (i.e., non-mitochondrial) enzyme cross-reacted with the soluble enzyme of human origin and was used in an immunoprecipitation assay to quantitate the soluble and mitochondrial isoenzymes. These were separated by rapid, semiquantitative electrophoresis on cellulose acetate and by three other quantitative techniques: isoelectric focusing and anion-and cation-exchange chromatography. The mitochrondrial enzyme averaged 81% of the total activi

Aspartate Aminotransferase/Alanine Aminotransferase Ratio Predicts the Post-surgical Prognosis of Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Survival rates in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have failed to improve greatly over time, and novel biomarkers are urgently needed. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the predictive ability of the pre-treatment serum aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio (SLR) for the prognosis of patients with OSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study based on a prospectively maintained database included 552 patients who were diagnosed with primary OSCC and underwent surgery between August 2011 and January 2022. The pre-treatment SLR was dete

Association between alanine aminotransferase-to-aspartate aminotransferase ratio and obstructive sleep apnea: A cross-sectional study of NHANES.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with abnormal liver enzyme levels. However, the association between the alanine aminotransferase-to-aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) ratio and OSA remains understudied in large, nationally representative samples. This study examined the relationship between ALT/AST ratio and OSA among adults in the United States. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 7371 participants aged ≥20 years, pooling data from 4 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles (2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018). Weighted multivariate logist

Aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio and clinical outcomes after acute ischemic stroke: the CNSR-III registry.

Elevated aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR) has been associated with cardiovascular diseases and mortality. The clinical significance of AAR in the prognosis of stroke has yet to be established. We aimed to investigate the associations between AAR levels and clinical outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Patients with AIS or TIA in the Third China National Stroke Registry (CNSR-III) were divided into four groups by quartiles of AAR, and two groups according to AAR < 1 and AAR ≥ 1. Multivariable Cox regression for all-cause m

Elevated aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in the torsion of ovarian mature cystic teratoma: normalised after operation for torsion.

The aim of the study was to report the elevated liver function test levels in torsion of ovarian mature cystic teratoma (MCT). A retrospective review was performed of 116 patients with MCT who underwent surgery in our hospital between 2010 and 2017. Eleven of 116 patients were with torsion of MCT. Of the 11 torsion of MCT cases, 6 of those showed abnormal elevated levels of aspartate transaminase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT). After operation, AST/ALT levels recovered to normal ranges. Elevated liver function levels require attention to complications associated with anaesthesia and emer

The aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio predicts all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes.

An increased aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR) has been widely used as a marker of advanced hepatic fibrosis. Increased AAR was also shown to be significantly associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular (CV) disease. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the AAR and mortality risk in a well-characterized cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes.A cohort of 2529 type 2 diabetic outpatients was followed-up for 6 years to collect cause-specific mortality. Cox regression analyses were modeled to estimate the independent association b

The ratio of aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT): the correlation of value with underlying severity of alcoholic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease is one of the most frequently diagnosed liver problems in the hospitalized patients in most tertiary care hospitals all over the world .The diagnosis of alcoholic liver disease is most of the time clinical. The AST/ALT ratio is a useful and reliable biochemical marker of liver injury due to alcohol. Whether the value of AST/ALT ratio correlates with clinical severity has not been studied. OBJECTIVES: To study values of AST/ALT ratio in correlation with clinical severity of illness due to alcoholic liver disease using Child-Pugh's grading. METHODS: This is

The ratio of aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase: potential value in differentiating nonalcoholic steatohepatitis from alcoholic liver disease.

OBJECTIVE: The ratio of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is often greater than 2:1 in alcoholic hepatitis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this ratio may be used to distinguish nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) from alcoholic liver disease. METHODS: Patients with NASH were matched with controls with alcoholic liver disease based on age, gender, and date of diagnosis. The diagnosis of alcoholic liver disease was based on exclusion of other causes and a significant history of alcohol consumption. The diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatiti

Association between aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio and mortality in critically ill patients with congestive heart failure.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome that significantly impacts patient outcomes, especially in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). The aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AST/ALT), has also been reported as a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies investigated the correlations between the AST/ALT ratio and ICU mortality in critically ill patients with CHF. This study investigates the association between the baseline AST/ALT ratio measured within the first 24 h of ICU admission and

Effect of betaxolol on aspartate aminotransferase activity in hypoxic rat retina in vitro.

We investigated the effect of betaxolol on the decrease of mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (mAAT) activity in rat retinas induced by hypoxia in vitro. It is reported that mAAT decreases in ischemic or hypoxic retina and that the decrease is caused by Ca(2+)-dependent proteases such as calpain. Betaxolol is a compound that has beta(1)-adrenergic receptor blocking and voltage-dependent calcium channel blocking properties. The rat eye cups were maintained with Locke's solution saturated with 95% air - 5% CO(2). The eye cups were immersed in glucose-free Locke's solution saturated with 95

Effect of pyridoxine-deficiency on the turnover of aspartate aminotransferase isozymes in rat liver.

DL-[14C]Leucine or L-[3H]leucine was injected intraperitoneally into pyridoxine-deficient and control rats, and the subsequent incorporation of the radioactivities into aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT) isozymes and the total soluble protein in the liver was measured. AspAT in the cytosol (AspATc) was separated into 3 subfractions with different characteristics on chromatofocusing. The results showed that in the liver of pyridoxine-deficient rats, the syntheses of all 3 subfractions of AspATc and degradation of AspATc (total) were increased, but that the syntheses and degradation of the total

Macro-aspartate aminotransferase mimicking hepatic injury: a diagnostic dilemma for clinicians.

Chronic isolated elevated liver enzymes could be a sequela of macroenzymes, causing diagnostic confusion. We presented the case of an elderly female with no prior history of chronic liver disease who was referred by her primary oncologist for evaluation of persistently elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) since her lung cancer diagnosis. Her autoimmune and hepatitis work-up was negative. AST remained elevated despite discontinuing chemotherapy, and a repeat chronic liver disease work-up was unrevealing. Macro-AST was suspected and confirmed using the polyethylene glycol precipitation meth
