Somatotype Analysis of International Football Players with Cerebral Palsy: A Comparison with Non-Disabled Football Players.

Football for people with cerebral palsy is a para-sport involving ambulant athletes with impairments, such as hypertonia, ataxia, or athetosis. The objective of the present study was to describe the somatotype of a representative sample of international football players according to different functional profiles of cerebral palsy, including spastic diparesis, athetosis/ataxia, spastic hemiparesis, and minimum impairment criteria, and to compare it with non-disabled football players. A total of 144 international para-footballers and 39 non-disabled footballers participated in the study, and the

[Statistical study of the relationships between the etiology and clinical picture of cerebral palsy].

846 children with cerebral palsy were examined and 642 were selected for a statistical study by correspondence analysis. The aim was to identify without any prior assumptions, the relationships between the aetiological factors and the clinical findings. The study was completed by conventional statistical analysis of 584 of the cases. Small birth weight and a history of abnormal pregnancies was associated with a cerebral palsy affecting both legs, and often with a squint. Resuscitation was associated with athetosis and abnormalities of posture and behaviour. If the resuscitation lasted for more

[Cerebral palsy].

Great advances have been made in the causes, lesions and symptoms of cerebral palsy over the years. Children with athetosis have lesions of the ventral lateral nuclei of the thalamus and putamen. Cocontraction and overflow are considered essential problems in athetosis. Some patients with a lesion of the ventral lateral nucleus of the thalamus do not show any involuntary movements. Children with periventricular leukomalacia demonstrate various patterns of the hip, knee and ankle in response to bearing body weight. Some of these patients exhibit ataxia, tremor and mouth opening triggered by vol

Examining the Influence of Impairment Type on the Development of Paralympic Sport Athletes.

Research has recently examined the role of impairment onset on athlete development in Paralympic sport; however, less is known on how impairment type can impact athlete sporting pathways. In this study, 187 Australian and Canadian Paralympic sport athletes completed a survey. Participants were divided into the following four groups: impaired muscle power (n = 79); ataxia, athetosis, and hypertonia (n = 44); limb deficiencies (n = 42); and other physical impairments (n = 22). Mechanisms of initiation into Paralympic sport varied between groups with some drawn to sport through friends and/or fam

Dynamic and static stability in para-athletes with cerebral palsy considering their impairment profile.

BACKGROUND: Balance impairment is a common feature in people with cerebral palsy (CP), affecting the performance of daily-life and physical activities. OBJECTIVES: To (1) explore the absolute and relative intrasession reliability of two balance tests to assess dynamic and static balance in ambulant para-athletes with CP; (2) explore the relationships between the two balance tests to determine potential application in sport classification; (3) assess the differences between CP profiles (ie, spastic diplegia, athetosis/ataxia, and spastic hemiplegia) in comparison to those with a minimum impair

Clonic Perseveration after Acute Ischemic Stroke: An Insight into the Pathophysiological Mechanisms.

Poststroke movement disorders may manifest as parkinsonism, dystonia, chorea, ballism, athetosis, tremor, myoclonus, stereotypies, and akathisia. In this article, we describe a patient with clonic perseveration 2 days after an acute ischemic stroke. We discuss the phenomenology and provide insights on possible pathophysiological mechanisms involved.

Using Decision Trees to Support Classifiers' Decision-Making about Activity Limitation of Cerebral Palsy Footballers.

This study aimed (1) to determine the appropriateness of using decision trees as a classification tool for determining the allocation of sport classes of para-footballers with "moderate vs. mild" cerebral palsy (CP) profiles of spastic diplegia/hemiplegia and ataxia/athetosis based on observational outcomes by international classifiers, and (2) to identify what key observational features were relevant to discriminating among different impairment levels. A sample of 16 experienced international classifiers from five world regions participated in this study, observing activity limitation of a fi

[Involuntary movements and birth injuries to brain].

Asphyxia may play an important role in the pathogenesis of cerebral palsy (CP) in a subpopulation of patients, although this has recently been questioned by some investigators. Here I describe the results of our analyses into the involuntary movements of children with CP, which resulted from perinatal hypoxic brain damages. Based on cranial CT or MRI findings, the patients were divided into five groups: A, those showing high density on CT in the basal nuclei (bilateral thalami in particular); B, those showing destruction of bilateral putamina; C, those with diffuse low-density areas in the cer

Image-directed functional neurosurgery with the Cosman-Roberts-Wells stereotactic instrument.

An isocentered system for functional stereotactic procedures with the Cosman-Roberts-Wells frame and a CT localizer that allows extrapolation of target data directly from the CT slice is presented. Based on anatomical landmarks and on the scaled corresponding transverse plates of the Schaltenbrand and Wahren atlas, we delineate the thalamic and cerebellar nuclei. Twenty three image-directed functional procedures were performed in one year on 18 patients (7 with Parkinson's disease, 4 with dystonia, 3 persons with essential tremor, 2 patients with choreo-athetosis and 2 with de-afferentiation p

Dominant use of the left hand by athetotic cerebral palsied children.

Hand preference was studied in 57 children with athetotic cerebral palsy. A left-sided preference was seen in 61% of the subjects. In more severely affected children for whom the possible cause was asphyxia, the left-sided preference was especially common. The perinatal brain damage causing athetosis may affect a motor system controlling movement on the right side more severely.

[Dyskinesia in various diseases--cerebrovascular disease, head injury, brain tumor].

In the broad sense of the term, dyskinesia refers to the overall spectrum of abnormal involuntary movement. Abnormal involuntary movement includes parkinsonism, chorea, athetosis, myoclonus and ballism. Clinically, the most frequently encountered form of dyskinesia is parkinsonism. In addition to parkinsonism, typical forms of dyskinesia caused by cerebrovascular disease, head injury and brain tumor, based on a review of the literature and our own experience are discussed.

Treatment of involuntary movement disorders with tetrabenazine.

Seventeen patients with choreiform, athetoid, or ballistic involuntary movements, or with spasmodic torticollis, were treated with tetrabenazine in doses of 25 to 200 mg daily for periods varying from two weeks to more than six months. Randomized ciné film of the patients' involuntary movements, taken before, during, and after treatment was assessed individually by seven `blind' observers. Eight patients were judged improved; two had Huntington's chorea, two athetosis, two dystonia musculorum deformans, one hemiballismus, and one spasmodic torticollis. Four of the eight improved patients have

[Idiopathic (Oral) and Tardive Dyskinesia: Pathogenesis, Epidemiology, and Treatment].

Etymologically, dyskinesia is a combination of the prefix "dys-," which means 'abnormality' and the suffix "-kinesia," which means 'movement.' In a broad sense, dyskinesia indicates hyperkinetic involuntary movements. In a narrow sense, as a general term, dyskinesia refers to combinations of one or more of the following movements: chorea, dystonia, tremor, ballism, athetosis, tics, and myoclonus. In this article, we describe the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and treatment of idiopathic (oral) and tardive dyskinesia.

Chronic cerebellar stimulation for cerebral palsy--five-year study.

Two hundred sixty-two patients were implanted with cerebellar stimulator systems since February 1974. Cerebral Palsy (CP) patients constituted 88% (230) of this series. The age range was 3 to 53 years with 70% under 20 years of age. Half the CP series were severely affected with the rest being moderately to mildly involved. Athetosis was present in 50%. The primary effect of CCS has been a lowering of spastic muscle tone in 90% of the patients. Improvements in control of immature reflexes such as startle response, head control, scissoring, balance and sitting occur in the first month. Athetosi

Drooling, chewing and swallowing dysfunctions in children with cerebral palsy: treatment according to Castillo-Morales.

About 23 percent of the sixty-eight children with cerebral palsy, studied at the Werner-Otto-Institute's Pediatric Rehabilitation Center, suffered from a spastic tetraparesis. About 19 percent suffered from an athetosis; about 20 percent from a hypotonia, including three with cerebellar ataxia. The remainder of the group had minimal sequelae of cerebral palsy; mental problems were predominant. Their orofacial dysfunctions were treated according to the therapeutic concepts of Castillo-Morales.

Intrapelvic obturator neurectomy in cerebral palsy.

Results of 202 obturator neurectomies including 190 intrapelvic and 8 extrapelvic obturator neurectomies in 100 patients were evaluated. Obturator neurectomy, intrapelvic in particular, yielded gratifying results in properly selected patients. It controlled adductor spasticity, scissoring, improved perineal care and helped the patients in sitting and early ambulation. Pre- and post-operative intensive physiotherapy was necessary to get maximum benefit of the surgery. Poor motor status, low IQ, athetosis and inadequate post-operative care had adverse effect on final outcome.

Extrapyramidal involvement in Rett's syndrome.

Extrapyramidal dysfunction is poorly characterized in Rett's syndrome, a neurodegenerative disorder in girls. We studied the motor and behavioral findings in 32 Rett's syndrome patients, 21 months to 30 years old. In addition to the typical stereotyped movements and scoliosis, other motor disturbances included bruxism, sialorrhea, ocular deviations, parkinsonian findings, dystonia, myoclonus, and athetosis. The types of movement disorders seemed to be age-related, with the hyperkinetic disorders occurring in the younger patients and the bradykinetic disorders occurring more frequently in the o

Catching the Culprit: How Chorea May Signal an Inborn Error of Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Movement disorders, particularly chorea, are uncommon in inborn errors of metabolism, but their identification is essential for improved clinical outcomes. In this context, comprehensive descriptions of movement disorders are limited and primarily derived from single cases or small patient series, highlighting the need for increased awareness and additional research in this field. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the MEDLINE database and GeneReviews. The search included studies on inborn errors of metabolism associated with chorea, athetosis, or ballismus.
