Audiologist Decision-Making: Hearing Aid Technology Levels and Auditory Ecology.

BACKGROUND: Audiologists are expected to use evidence-based practices to guide their decision-making practices and recommendations regarding specific hearing aid technology for each patient. However, guidance regarding how to make these decisions is limited and sometimes conflicting. Hearing aid manufacturers have promoted the idea that an individual's auditory ecology, which refers to their listening demands and environments, may contribute to interpatient differences in outcomes and benefits of specific technology. How the limited and conflicting evidence surrounding technology levels and au

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus: Addressing the Controversy of Its Clinical Delivery by Audiologists.

Audiologists' role in providing care for tinnitus typically includes conducting an audiologic evaluation, fitting hearing aids when appropriate, assessing the impact of tinnitus, and facilitating use of sound to improve quality of life with tinnitus when appropriate. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is consistently judged by systematic reviews as having the strongest evidence relative to other therapies for improving quality of life with tinnitus. Because audiologists are already playing an active role in providing care for tinnitus, and the relative paucity of behavioral health providers wh

The Audiologist's Role in Determining Cochlear Function After Gunshot Injury to the Temporal Bone.

BACKGROUND: An increase in gun violence over the last few years has resulted in gunshot injuries soaring as a top public health issue in the United States. The increase in gun violence has also led to an increase in gunshot wounds on the temporal bone. The most common major complaint in conscious patients with temporal bone trauma is hearing loss. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explain the need for successful management of penetrating head injuries, demonstrate the role of the audiologist in determining cochlear function after gunshot injury to the temporal bone, and discuss the imp

Audiologist-Guided Multimodal AI for Pure-Tone Audiometry and Tympanometry Interpretation and Reporting.

Multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) could support audiology reporting, but an end-to-end score can obscure whether errors arise from image transcription, specialty-rule execution, or communication. We evaluated these as separate modules in 155 de-identified outpatient records representing 151 patients. In Module 1, schema-only and audiologist-skill prompts were compared in 50 development records; the locked skill was then tested with a Codex GPT5.5 agentic workflow in 101 independent patients. A post hoc robustness analysis tested matched schema-only and skill-assisted direct-API condition

Long-Term Outcomes of Self-Fit vs Audiologist-Fit Hearing Aids.

IMPORTANCE: With rising interest in over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids as an alternative to traditional audiologist-fit devices, understanding their long-term efficacy is crucial. However, given the novelty of the US Food and Drug Administration category of OTC hearing aids, minimal evidence currently supports their long-term efficacy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the long-term self-reported outcomes at 8 months of self-fit OTC hearing aids to the same hearing aids fit by audiologists. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Building on a previous randomized clinical trial, this follow-up comparative e

Internet-Based Audiologist-Guided Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a symptom that can be very distressing owing to hearing sounds not related to any external sound source. Managing tinnitus is notoriously difficult, and access to evidence-based care is limited. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a tinnitus management strategy with the most evidence of effectiveness but is rarely offered to those distressed by tinnitus. The provision of internet-based CBT for tinnitus overcomes accessibility barriers; however, it is not currently readily available in the United States. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy

Where are audiologists in the room of wizards? Oncology patient experiences with audiology in an Australian public hospital.

PURPOSE: This study reports the thoughts and experiences of a sample of these patients regarding audiology and hearing impairment during CT. It expands on recent research in a large, publicly funded tertiary hospital in Australia that revealed that patients receiving ototoxic, cumulative cisplatin chemotherapy (CT) had a median of zero encounters with audiology (IQR = 0-1) during their treatment. This finding was in contrast with international audiological ototoxicity monitoring (OtoM) guidelines that recommend prospective OtoM for all patients undergoing CT. SAMPLE AND SETTING: Fifteen adult

Opioid-Induced Hearing Loss and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Clinical Considerations for Audiologists and Recommendations for Future Research.

Purpose Over the last two decades, the number of Americans misusing opioids has reached epidemic levels. With such drastic increases in opioid misuse, audiologists are more likely to have patients with opioid-induced hearing loss or neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) than in previous years. More attention is needed on how these increases might influence clinical practice and such a discussion could be useful for audiologists. The goal of this article, therefore, is to summarize what is currently known regarding the relationship between opioid misuse and audiology to help guide hearing health c

Breaking Down Communication Barriers: Assessing the Need for Audiologists to Have Access to Clinically Relevant Sign Language.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests Deaf individuals have longstanding negative perceptions of their interactions with health care providers, primarily due to communication barriers. One way to improve relations would be for audiologists to learn clinically relevant sign language. PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to gain a better understanding of audiologists' knowledge of Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL) and evaluate motivation for instruction in signing abilities. RESEARCH DESIGN: A 21-question survey was emailed and advertised in a social media group for audiologists. The survey wa
