Underwater human activities and anthropogenic noise in our oceans may be a major source of habitat degradation for marine life. This issue was highlighted by the opening of the United States Eastern Seaboard for seismic oil and gas exploration in 2014, which generated massive media coverage and widespread concern that seismic surveys could kill or deafen whales. We discovered 11 new specimens of fractured and healed cetacean ear bones, out of a survey of 2127 specimens housed in museum collections. This rare condition has been previously reported only in two specimens of blue whales (Balaenopt

Human diplogonoporiasis caused by the tapeworm Diplogonoporus balaenopterae has been rarely reported in Japan in the last decade. A 38-year-old man complained of a fever, diarrhea, intermittent abdominal pain, and worm excretion. He had a history of consuming raw juvenile Japanese anchovy one month earlier. On admission, the patient had acute enteritis and received intravenous fluids. During hospitalization, he excreted a white worm in his stool. On a macroscopic examination, the worm was found to be a tapeworm with scolexes. His health improved spontaneously without taking anthelmintic agents

Balaenid whales feed on large aggregates of small and slow-moving prey (predominantly copepods) through a filtration process enabled by baleen. These whales exhibit continuous filtration, namely, with the mouth kept partially opened and the baleen exposed to oncoming prey-laden waters while fluking. The process is an example of crossflow filtration (CFF) in which most of the particulates (prey) are separated from the substrate (water) without ever coming into contact with the filtering surface (baleen). This paper discusses the simulation of baleen filtration hydrodynamics based on a type of h

Like other rorqual whale species, blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) evolved to specialize in consuming large numbers of small-bodied prey through engulfment filter feeding.1,2 Blue whales in the eastern North Pacific feed almost exclusively on ephemeral swarms of krill.3,4,5 The densest and most energetically profitable krill aggregations are often associated with bathymetric features5,6,7,8 and circulation phenomena,8,9,10,11,12 but how the whales find patchy krill swarms in a vast dynamic habitat remains largely unknown. Integrating animal- and satellite-borne sensing in the eastern North

BACKGROUND: Along with the transition to the aquatic environment, cetaceans experienced profound changes in their skeletal anatomy, especially in the skull, including the posterodorsal migration of the external bony nares, the reorganization of skull bones (= telescoping) and the development of an extreme cranial asymmetry (in odontocetes). Telescoping represents an important anatomical shift in the topological organization of cranial bones and their sutural contacts; however, the impact of these changes in the connectivity pattern and integration of the skull has never been addressed.

We first constructed and characterized the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence of Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum, the type species of genus Diphyllobothrium, using next generation sequencing (NGS). The mitogenome of D. stemmacephalum was 13,716bp, including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 2 longer intergenic non-coding regions, and has features common to mitogenomes of other cestodes. Although it has been accepted that tRNA for serine (trnS2(UCN)) in Platyhelminthes lacks a D arm, the trnS2(UCN) of D. stemmacephalum was predicted to have a paired D arm

A species-independent indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) based on chimeric protein A/G was established for the detection of anti-Brucella antibodies in Arctic wildlife species and compared to previously established brucellosis serological tests for hooded seals (Cystophora cristata), minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis), fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), and polar bears (Ursus maritimus), as well as bacteriology results for reindeer and caribou (Rangifer tarandus sp.). The protein A/G iELISA results were consistent with the other sero

The North Atlantic blue whale was depleted by modern whaling and it is still considered to be highly endangered. Despite its protection in 1954, catches continued in the South European Atlantic Shelf (SEAS) region and immediately adjacent waters until 1979. We compiled catches and investigate abundance trends in the region using original data from whaling (1921-1985) and scientific surveys around the last years of exploitation (1981-1987). The struck and lost rate was estimated at 3.2% for sperm whales and 2.3% for baleen whales. The compiled records include 60 catches, with an additional 1-2

Reliable differentiation of similar acoustic signals remains a major challenge for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of sympatric marine mammal species. Blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) produce frequency-modulated (FM) downsweeping calls with overlapping frequency ranges and durations, making species attribution difficult. This study combines long-term PAM datasets with animal-borne tag recordings to investigate how these FM calls can be reliably distinguished by species. Tag recordings with confirmed species identity showed substantial overlap in most acoust

In the summer and autumn of 1990, a cetacean morbillivirus caused a massive epizootic mortality of striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba in the western Mediterranean. Previous circumstantial evidence suggested that the disease could also have increased host susceptibility to infestations with epizoic crustaceans. In this study we provide strong evidence supporting this hypothesis. We examined striped dolphins stranded along the Mediterranean central coast of Spain from 1981 to 2004 (n = 136), and recorded data on prevalence, intensity of infestation, size and reproductive status of 2 sessile

Emerging and re-emerging pathogens have been increasingly investigated in cetaceans worldwide, particularly in odontocetes, whereas infectious diseases in mysticetes remain poorly understood. This study surveyed herpesvirus in 51 baleen whales stranded along the Brazilian coast, between 2008 and 2022: humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae, n = 46), Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera brydei, n = 3), a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis, n = 1), and a common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata, n = 1). A total of 159 tissue samples were analyzed using nested PCR assays targeting the herpe

Detailed pathological and virological examinations were carried out on 25 cetaceans found stranded between 1990 and 1993 on the coasts of six Italian regions (Latium, Tuscany, Apulia, Abruzzo, Veneto and Sicily). There were 16 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), three bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), three Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), one rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis), one fin whale pup (Balaenoptera physalus), and one minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Apart from parasitic diseases (44 per cent), the most frequently detected lesions were pneumonia (68

In 1971, 81 finback (Balaenoptera physalus), 119 sei (B. borealis), two piked (B. acutorostrata), 15 humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and one sperm whale (Physeter catodon) taken in the North Atlantic off the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia coasts were examined for the presence of Trichinella spiralis. All 218 whales were negative for trichinosis.

Physio-logging methods, which use animal-borne devices to record physiological variables, are entering a new era driven by advances in sensor development. However, existing datasets collected with traditional bio-loggers, such as accelerometers, still contain untapped eco-physiological information. Here, we present a computational method for extracting heart rate from high-resolution accelerometer data using a ballistocardiogram. We validated our method with simultaneous accelerometer-electrocardiogram tag deployments in a controlled setting on a killer whale (Orcinus orca) and demonstrate the

We report the gross and microscopic findings and molecular identification of 2 cases of hyphate fungal infection in cetaceans from Brazil. The first case involved an adult male Atlantic spotted dolphin Stenella frontalis with localized pulmonary disease characterized by pyogranulomatous and necrotizing bronchopneumonia with intralesional hyphae. The second case involved an adult male Bryde's whale Balaenoptera edeni with orchitis, periorchitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis and pyogranulomatous bronchopneumonia with intralesional hyphae. PCR analysis from the dolphin's lung yielded Aspergillus fumi

Rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae) grow to exceptional size by lunging to engulf entire swarms of fish or krill, then rapidly concentrating prey using a baleen filter. A 20-m-long fin whale can engulf 60 m3 of water and 144 kg of krill in a single gulp and expel the water in 31 s, allowing the animal to make six lunges in a single 8 min dive. But there is a problem hidden in this apparently efficient scheme. Spread uniformly across the 2.9 m2 of the baleen window, 144 kg of krill forms a layer 6.3 cm thick. If the accumulated krill clog the filter, it could increase the time needed to expel wate

Rorqual foraging behavior varies with species, prey type and foraging conditions, and can be a determining factor for their fitness. Little is known about the foraging ecology of Rice's whales (Balaenoptera ricei), an endangered species with a population of fewer than 100 individuals. Suction cup tags were attached to two Rice's whales to collect information on their diving kinematics and foraging behavior. The tagged whales primarily exhibited lunge-feeding near the sea bottom and to a lesser extent in the water-column and at the sea surface. During 6-10 min foraging dives, the whales typical

Many previous studies have shown that rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae), including the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whale (B. physalus), sei whale (B. borealis), Bryde's whale (B. edeni), minke whale (B. acutorostrata), and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), employ a strategy called lunge feeding to capture a large amount of krill and/or fish for nourishment [1]. Lunge feeding entails a high energetic cost due to the drag created by an open mouth at high speeds [1,2]. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, Bryde's whales, which feed on small fish species [3], predominantly anchovies, d

Mid-frequency military (1-10 kHz) sonars have been associated with lethal mass strandings of deep-diving toothed whales, but the effects on endangered baleen whale species are virtually unknown. Here, we used controlled exposure experiments with simulated military sonar and other mid-frequency sounds to measure behavioural responses of tagged blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) in feeding areas within the Southern California Bight. Despite using source levels orders of magnitude below some operational military systems, our results demonstrate that mid-frequency sound can significantly affect b

Many Mysticetes (baleen whales) are acoustically active marine mammals. This is epitomized by rorquals, and specifically male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) whose complex songs comprise a wide range of vocalizations. The sound production mechanism of odontocetes (toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises) is well described, in contrast to that of mysticetes whose vocalization mechanism remains a subject of active scientific investigation. Anatomical observations and acoustic signal processing have led to divergent hypotheses under the framework of a production-based approach.
