Since we first described the rationale for the use of hydrocolloid dressings to treat keloids and hypertrophic scars, this technique has been used as an occlusive therapy alternative to the use of silicone sheets in our outpatient clinic. In this paper, we describe the use of these dressings on two patients with challenging scars: a large postburn hypertrophic scar on a young patient's hand and arm, with a growing keloid on the wrist, and a progressive scar on the lower eyelid, developing after a complication of a cosmetic blepharoplasty procedure, leading to ectropium. The methods on the prop

Necrotising fasciitis is a severe, life-threatening soft tissue infection. It produces an extensive cellulitis with severe involvement of subcutaneous tissue, fascia, muscle or both, resulting in necrosis of the tissue. All age groups, including neonates, can be affected. Patients with necrotising fasciitis present with more severe constitutional symptoms and have a poor outcome, unless aggressive antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement are instituted promptly. The debridement of necrotic tissue is imperative to control the infection, but results in deep wounds that require further treatme

BACKGROUND: All fibrous wound dressings are considered to have the same action and value to the support of wound healing. Although clear distinction has been accepted between cotton gauze and calcium alginates, there is still no formally recognised distinction between calcium alginates and the more rapidly gelling fibre dressings.
METHOD: Scientific and clinical evaluations were used to differentiate two different fibrous wound care products. One is derived from polymer extraction of algae (alginate dressings); the other has been manufactured from a uniquely patented carboxymethylation proces

Moist wound healing has been recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a preferred approach for skin wound treatment. The global market for moist wound dressings is valued at approximately USD 4.83 billion, driven by the ability of moist wound environments to promote faster healing, improve recovery quality, and reduce pain. Covering the wound with dressings, mostly hydrocolloid-based, is a preferred method to maintain a moist wound environment and isolate this environment from external interferences. Currently, commercial hydrocolloid dressings have already reached satisfa

Wound care management and the dressing of wounds represent some of the most basic services offered in primary health care facilities across Southern Africa. Clinicians should have a basic understanding of the processes of wound healing and wound bed preparation to match the ideal cost-effective dressing to the particular type of wound to be managed. In the 'kingdom of wounds', the authors use a popular analogy and propose the best five strategies for the clinician in choosing the right management option in the 'game of dressings'.

BACKGROUND: Cases of venous leg ulcers (VLU) are expected to rise due to the rapidly ageing population in Malaysia. Central to the management of these wounds is compression therapy together with an appropriate wound dressing. Pain and discomfort during dressing changes are common in these patients. Polyurethane foam dressings with SMARTPORE technology (micropore dressing; Mundipharma) facilitate vertical absorption of exudate to reduce risks of wound and periwound area maceration. They support easy dressing removal with less pain and trauma to the wound bed. Thus, the micropore dressing was ch

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in developed countries have a prevalence of 11% with diabetic foot infections as the most common cause of hospitalization and amputation. To achieve healing of the diabetic foot ulcer wounds, appropriate dressings are essential and their effectiveness can be enhanced with nanoparticles, nevertheless ideal combinations of dressing composition and nanodrugs require further testing in humans. We have developed a calcium alginate dressings with ZnO nanoparticles (CAZnODs) for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers in human patients. To test the efficacy of CAZnODs we designed

Most patients who undergo open rhinoseptoplasty do not develop any wound at the transcolumellar incision site. However, some patients require wound care immediately post-operation. Dressing is difficult to perform in the columellar region because of the location. Here, we report 2 cases of columellar wound as a complication of open rhinoseptoplasty. A patient developed mild wound dehiscence immediately after primary rhinoseptoplasty, whereas another developed partial columellar skin necrosis after the revision operation. We applied DuoDERM Extra Thin dressing (ConvaTec Group, Deeside, UK) for

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite advances in therapeutic strategies for the management of patients with severe burns, the sequelae are pathophysiologically profound, up to the systemic and metabolic levels. Management of patients with a severe burn injury is a long-term, complex process, with treatment dependent on the degree and location of the burn and total body surface area (TBSA) affected. In adverse conditions with limited resources, efficient triage, stabilisation, and rapid transfer to a specialised intensive care burn centre is

Promoting tissue viability and caring for skin damaged as a result of radiotherapy are critical to the quality of care patients receive. However, few nurses recognise fully the effect of radiotherapy on tissue viability and wound healing. This article considers the causes and types of skin damage resulting from radiotherapy treatment that nurses may encounter, and how this damage can be graded. Based on the extent of skin reaction to radiotherapy, management options are explored, illustrated by a case study. A guide to product selection, derived from the authors' experience, is presented.

UNLABELLED: This report describes the successful use of protein C concentrate to treat severe purpura fulminans in a homozygous protein C-deficient infant for 8 months until oral anticoagulation was initiated. While fresh frozen plasma was previously used in such cases to replace protein C in the acute phase, the availability of a monoclonal antibody purified protein C concentrate now allows specific replacement of protein C, avoiding problems of fluid overload. An occlusive-hydrocolloid bandage proved to be effective in local treatment of skin lesions. D-dimer, fibrin monomer, thrombin-antith
