Foreign matter contaminating ethanolic extract of propolis: a filth-test survey comparing products from small beekeeping farms and industrial producers.

Propolis is a resinous material collected by honeybees from the exudates and buds of plants. It has been widely used as a remedy by humans since ancient times, as well as for dietary supplements and cosmetics. European legislation recently focused on the quality and hygiene standards of foods, including beehive products, and extensive efforts have been made to avoid the presence of chemical contaminants, whilst in contrast few studies have investigated the magnitude of contamination by physical ones. We conducted a filth-test survey to evaluate the contamination of ethanolic extract of propoli

The Beekeeping Sector of Kazakhstan and Contributions to the Pharmaceutical Industry: Promising Flavonoids with the Pharmacokinetic Properties Via the Computational Evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Bee products are rich sources of bioactive flavonoids with potential applications in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical research. However, differences in the physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties of individual flavonoids may substantially influence their drug-likeness and bioavailability. This study aimed to characterize the pharmacokinetic, physicochemical, and drug-likeness profiles of four representative flavonoids commonly associated with bee products myricetin, galangin, kaempferol, and quercetin. METHODS: In silico pharmacokinetic and drug-likeness analyses were perfo

Prevalence, pattern, contact sensitisers and impact on quality-of-life of occupational dermatitis among beekeepers in North India.

BACKGROUND: Beekeepers face specific occupational health risks due to exposure to bee products and chemicals. Propolis is a notable cause of contact hypersensitivity in beekeepers. Its chemical composition varies by region, complicating allergy investigations. While propolis allergies are documented in Western populations, no studies exist in India. AIM: To assess the prevalence and patterns of dermatitis among beekeepers, identify contact sensitisers and evaluate its impact on quality-of-life (QoL). METHODS: An 18-month community-based cross-sectional study was conducted involving 340 beeke

Prioritizing changes in management practices associated with reduced winter honey bee colony losses for US beekeepers.

Beekeepers attempt to manage their honey bee colonies in ways that optimize colony health. Disentangling the impact of management from other variables affecting colony health is complicated by the diversity of practices used and difficulties handling typically complex and incomplete observational datasets. We propose a method to 1) compress multi-factored management data into a single index, to holistically investigate the real world impact of management on colony mortality, and 2) simplify said index to identify the core practices for which a change in behavior is associated with the greatest

Do Beekeepers Have a Sweet Life? Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders and Their Impact Among Apiarists in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVES: Agriculture employs about a third of the world's workforce and has been identified as having a high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs); however, little is known about specific agricultural sectors, particularly apiculture (commercial beekeeping). This paper presents the results of a questionnaire survey investigating the prevalence of MSDs among apiarists (commercial beekeepers) in New Zealand. A further objective was to gain an understanding of the impact of MSDs on apiarists. METHODS: Apiarists in New Zealand were invited to complete a self-reported qu

Six-year quantitative NMR profiling of polyfloral honey from a single beekeeping area in Okayama: harvest-season-associated variation in minor components.

Forty-six polyfloral honey lots collected in 2018-2023 from four apiaries in one beekeeping area in Okayama, Japan (5 early-spring, 15 spring, 14 late-spring, and 12 summer) were profiled for 17 minor components by quantitative broadband-WET 1H NMR; conventional 1H NMR quantified major sugars in 2018-2019. Tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine were broadly spring-associated, whereas valine and ethanol were relatively high in summer; lactic acid was higher in spring and summer than in late spring. Each year included spring, late-spring, and summer lots, so year-aware validation used 41 lots;

Epidemiology and risk factors of self-reported systemic allergic reactions to a Hymenoptera venom in beekeepers worldwide: a protocol for a systematic review of observational studies.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic allergic reaction (SAR) to a Hymenoptera venom is a potentially life-threatening disorder. The rate of SAR between beekeepers in comparison with a healthy individual is different. The risk for an SAR is particularly high in beekeepers due to their persistent or seasonal exposure to the stinging Hymenoptera. We aim to provide a critical appraisal and a synthesis of evidence-based data from epidemiological observational studies, focusing on SARs to a Hymenoptera venom and the associated risk factors for SARs in beekeepers worldwide. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Searching will in

Human factors facilitating the spread of a parasitic honey bee in South Africa.

Workers of the honey bee subspecies Apis mellifera capensis (Eschscholtz) produce female offspring by thelytokous parthenogenesis and can parasitize colonies of other subspecies. In 1990, translocation of 400 colonies of A. m. capensis into the distribution area of A. m. scutellata by a commercial beekeeper triggered a dramatic parasitic phenomenon. Parasitized colonies died within a few months of infestation, and this resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of colonies by commercial beekeepers in the A. m. scutellata range in South Africa. To deal with the problem and to identify methods th

Prevalence and epizootical aspects of varroasis in golestan province, northern iran.

BACKGROUND: The Varroa destructor mite is considered as a major pest of honey bees Apis mellifera. The rapid spread of Varroa mites among bee colonies may be due to several factors, including drifting of infested bees, movement of bee swarms, and robbing of weakened colonies. Disease spread and predisposing the infested bees to other diseases lead to high economic losses in beekeeping industries. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of and evaluate some managing factors in Golestan Province in Iran in 2008. METHODS: According to the records of Agricultural Research Center, 80

Potential associations between the mite Varroa destructor and other stressors in honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) in temperate and subtropical climate from Argentina.

The presence of Varroa destructor in colonies of Apis mellifera is explained by the interaction among a number of factors including beekeeping practices and surrounding environment features. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative impact of environment geographical region and beekeeping management on Varroa infestation levels throughout a year. A monitoring study was carried out during 2015 in north-central regions from Argentina, consisting of three sampling dates: 1) autumn survey before autumn acaricide treatment; 2) autumn survey after autumn acaricide treatment and 3) spring su

Pesticide contamination of beeswax from managed honey bee colonies in New York State.

The New York State (NYS) beekeeping industry generated >$11M worth of honey in 2020 and >$300M in pollination services to agriculture annually. Bees are frequently exposed to pesticides through foraging and husbandry practices. Lipophilic pesticides can remain in beeswax for extended periods. We analyzed for pesticides in wax comb samples collected from NYS apiaries at the end of the growing season, comparing residue numbers and concentrations among beekeepers of different operation scales: commercial beekeepers (>300 colonies), sideliners (50-299 colonies), and hobbyists (<50 colonies). We an

Nosema ceranae in Apis mellifera: a 12 years postdetection perspective.

Nosema ceranae is a hot topic in honey bee health as reflected by numerous papers published every year. This review presents an update of the knowledge generated in the last 12 years in the field of N. ceranae research, addressing the routes of transmission, population structure and genetic diversity. This includes description of how the infection modifies the honey bee's metabolism, the immune response and other vital functions. The effects on individual honey bees will have a direct impact on the colony by leading to losses in the adult's population. The absence of clear clinical signs could

Prevalence of pathogens in honey bee colonies and association with clinical signs in southwestern Quebec, Canada.

Honey bees can be affected by a variety of pathogens, which impacts their vital role as pollinators in agriculture. A cross-sectional study was conducted in southwestern Quebec to: i) estimate the prevalence of 11 bee pathogens; ii) assess the agreement between beekeeper suspicion of a disease and laboratory detection of the causative pathogen; and iii) explore the association between observed clinical signs and pathogen detection in a colony. A total of 242 colonies in 31 apiaries owned by 15 beekeepers was sampled in August 2017. The prevalence of Varroa destructor detection was estimated as

Effect of organic acids and probiotics on intestinal health of Apis mellifera.

Apis mellifera is an important pollinator that has a prominent impact on crops' ecological balance. Beekeeping provides us with more valuable products like honey, pollen, propolis, beeswax, and royal jelly. The ongoing era demands more scientific and environment-friendly strategies to improve the beekeeping sector internationally. Nowadays, the use of synbiotics (a combination of probiotics and prebiotics) has been declared as the need of the hour. However, little bit studies have been carried out in this regard. To improve the beekeeping sector in Pakistan, a study was designed to exploration

European foulbrood disease and protein supplementation in honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies pollinating highbush blueberries in British Columbia.

Beekeepers engaging in highbush blueberry pollination in Canada and the U.S. have raised concerns over poor colony health outcomes presenting as European foulbrood disease (EFB), which highlights a need for improved management strategies supporting colony health during and after pollination. We assessed over 200 colonies belonging to five beekeepers before, at the end, and three weeks following the end of the blueberry pollination period. Half of the colonies at each site were provided with MegaBee pollen supplement and scored for EFB prevalence and severity to test the hypothesis that protein

Health status of honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera) and disease-related risk factors for colony losses in Austria.

Austrian beekeepers frequently suffered severe colony losses during the last decade similar to trends all over Europe. This first surveillance study aimed to describe the health status of Austrian bee colonies and to analyze the reasons for losses for both the summer and winter season in Austria. In this study 189 apiaries all over Austria were selected using a stratified random sampling approach and inspected three times between July 2015 and spring 2016 by trained bee inspectors. The inspectors made interviews with the beekeepers about their beekeeping practice and the history of the involve

Inactivation of Nosema spp. with zinc phthalocyanine.

Most honey bee pathogens, such as Vairimorpha (Nosema), cannot be rapidly and definitively diagnosed in a natural setting, consequently there is typically the spread of these diseases through shared and re-use of beekeeping equipment. Furthermore, there are no viable treatment options available for Nosema spores to aid in managing the spread of this bee disease. We therefore aimed to develop a new method using novel Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) as a photosensitizer for the photodynamic inactivation of Nosema spores that could be used for the decontamination of beekeeping equipment. Nosema spores

Health status, sanitary gaps, and management practices in honey bee colonies within a tropical production system in Colombia.

Honey bees are essential livestock for pollination and agricultural sustainability, but their health and productivity in tropical regions remain incompletely documented. This study assessed the sanitary and productive status of managed honey bee colonies in the Cauca Department, Colombia, using a One Health approach. A total of 77 apiaries were monitored across two seasons to evaluate management practices, colony strength, sanitary deficiencies, Varroa mites' infestation rates, and the presence of pesticide residues in bee bread. Beekeeping in the territory was predominantly small-scale and fa
