A simple procedure has been developed that permits measurement of beta-receptors in membrane preparations from individual rat pineal glands using [125I]iodopindolol ([125I]PIN). [125I]PIN binding to pineal membranes was stereospecific and saturable. Scatchard analysis of saturation isotherms yielded a Kd of 147.3 +/- 54 pM and a Bmax of 11.1 +/- 1.5 fmol/pineal gland. Binding was linear suggesting that [125I]PIN binds to a single population of pineal beta-adrenergic receptors. This procedure was used to evaluate 24-h variations in density of pineal [125I]PIN binding sites in male rats maintain

AIMS: Conflicting results have been reported regarding the effect of beta-blockers on first-registered heart rhythm in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We aimed to establish whether the use of beta-blockers influences first-registered rhythm in OHCA.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We included patients with OHCA of presumed cardiac cause from two large independent OHCA-registries from Denmark and the Netherlands. Beta-blocker use was defined as exposure to either non-selective beta-blockers, β1-selective beta-blockers, or α-β-dual-receptor blockers within 90 days prior to OHCA. We calculated odds

This study examines the possible involvement of beta-endorphin in the photoperiodic control of reproduction in the Syrian hamster. beta-Endorphin and LHRH concentrations in the medial basal hypothalamus (MBH), anterior hypothalamus (AHA), and the preoptic area (POA) as well as pineal melatonin content were determined by RIA in male Syrian hamsters exposed to either a long day [(LD) 16-h light; 8-h dark; lights on 0700-2300] or short day [(SD) 8-h light, 16-h dark; lights on 0700-1500] for 8 weeks. Groups of eight animals from each photoperiod were killed by decapitation at 4-h intervals over 2

The motor circuit in Parkinson's disease (PD) involves the basal ganglia, thalamus, motor cortex, and cerebellum. Hence, subthalamic nucleus (STN) or globus pallidus internus deep brain stimulation is commonly used in treating refractory Parkinson's patients. During the procedure, the local field potential (LPF) is commonly made along the trajectory of the STN. Two cases were assessed, where an electroencephalographic recording at the sensorimotor cortices was also performed with and without stimulation at the optimal STN electrode site. The 'on' stimulation state associated with clinical impr

INTRODUCTION: Articulography and functional neuroimaging are two major tools for studying the neurobiology of speech production. Until now, however, it has generally not been feasible to use both in the same experimental setup because of technical incompatibilities between the two methodologies.
METHODS: Here we describe results from a novel articulography system dubbed Magneto-articulography for the Assessment of Speech Kinematics (MASK), which is technically compatible with magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain scanning systems. In the present paper we describe our methodological and analytic

Rhythm perception depends on the ability to predict the onset of rhythmic events. Previous studies indicate beta band modulation is involved in predicting the onset of auditory rhythmic events (Fujioka et al., 2009, 2012; Snyder & Large, 2005). We sought to determine if similar processes are recruited for prediction of visual rhythms by investigating whether beta band activity plays a role in a modality-dependent manner for rhythm perception. We looked at electroencephalography time-frequency neural correlates of prediction using an omission paradigm with auditory and visual rhythms. By using

OBJECTIVE: To investigate heart rate differences between non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers in patients with non-permanent atrial fibrillation (AF).
METHODS: Using data from 'A Comparison of Rate Control and Rhythm Control in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation' (AFFIRM), where patients were randomised 1:1 rate or rhythm control, we compared the effect of rate control drugs on heart rate during AF as well as during sinus rhythm. Multivariable logistic regression was used to adjust for baseline characteristics.
RESULTS: A total of 4060 patients were enrolled in the A

Clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) analysis ofladasten action in anxiety-asthenic patients with respect to their EEG-defined individual typological characteristics was carried out. Primary psychopathologic disorders and ladasten effects were assessed by objective classification methods (factor and cluster analyses), and individual EEG types characterized by marked or reduced alpha rhythm were determined. No significant correlations between baseline EEG results and the initial mental condition indices were found. Significant differences ofladasten action in patients with different EEG t

We performed electroencephalography to 11 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm in order to investigate the functional status of the brain. The relative potency (RP) of the main rhythms (alpha, beta, teta and delta) was increased, as well as the beta/alpha activation ratio. The increase of low-frequency rhythms (delta and teta) indicates the brain cortex hypoxia. The high-frequency reactivity of the brain (alpha- and beta-rhythms) was decreased in such patients, which was probably due to the decreased sensitivity of the receptor zone of the upper respiratory tract.

To study the role of opioid peptides in human obesity, plasma beta-endorphin (beta EP), beta-lipotropin (beta LPH), and cortisol resting values, circadian rhythms, and responses to hypoglycemia were studied in 6 prepubertal and 6 pubertal obese adolescents (at least 40% above ideal body weight) and in 10 normal subjects matched for age, sex, and pubertal development. Baseline plasma beta LPH and beta EP concentrations in both obese children and adolescents were twice as high as those in normal controls, while cortisol levels were not different. Cortisol, beta EP, and beta LPH levels had a clea

The effect of norepinephrine on LH is complex: the ovarian steroidal milieu appears to determine whether norepinephrine stimulates or inhibits LH secretion. It has been proposed that steroids allow norepinephrine to have opposite effects on LH by altering the relative concentrations of alpha 1-(stimulatory) and beta-(inhibitory) adrenergic receptors in the hypothalamus. Thus, many investigators have argued that estradiol may permit norepinephrine to stimulate LH release by increasing the density of alpha 1- and decreasing the density of beta-adrenergic receptors in one or more key hypothalamic

AIM: Differential drug treatment guided by the underlying heart disease may improve outcome of rhythm control therapy. In the present study we investigated in a well-defined group with either lone atrial fibrillation (AF) or hypertension whether there were differences in rhythm control outcome between both groups in relation to the use of cardiovascular drugs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred sixty-two patients were included after successful cardioversion of persistent AF. None of the patients was given a class I or III antiarrhythmic drug. Patients' heart rhythm was checked 3 times a day, us

Intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of the opioid peptide, beta-endorphin (5.0 pg/g) to goldfish, Carassius auratus, significantly increased the cohesiveness and duration of shoaling ('bout' length) in shoals of five fish, as well as decreasing the latency of shoal formation in response to an external disturbance, while a higher dose of beta-endorphin (15 pg/g) decreased shoaling. There were day-night rhythms in shoaling and in the extent of the facilitatory effects of beta-endorphin (5.0 pg/g) on shoaling behavior, the fish displaying significantly greater shoaling responses in the d

Plain language summaryDetecting the source of abnormal beta oscillations in Parkinson's Disease: evidence from a case of impaired connection between cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. In Parkinson's Disease, a key feature is an exaggerated, oscillatory activity in the brain called the "beta rhythm", which occurs in the circuit, particularly relevant for motor functions, connecting the cortex (the outer brain layer) and the basal ganglia (the deeper structures). Scientists have long debated whether the exact source of this pathological activity was located in the cortex or in the basal ganglia.

The electroencephalographic effects of two intravenous sedative/hypnotic drugs, propofol and thiopental, were studied at three stable blood concentrations in 52 normal healthy volunteers. The higher concentration resulted in unresponsiveness (lack of response to auditory/tactile stimuli) in all subjects. This report describes the strong frontal-central rhythms apparent in this state using a quantitative description of oscillatory systems underlying the rhythm. These rhythms occur when sedative drug concentrations are greater than those producing the well-described increase in broadband beta-po

It was hypothesized that homologous desensitization regulates signal transduction from the beta-adrenergic receptor in the ocular ciliary epithelium to affect the circadian rhythm of aqueous humor secretion. beta-arrestin-1 was cloned from the rabbit ciliary epithelium, and the full length cDNA used as a probe for Northern blot analysis to examine the diurnal expression of beta-arrestin mRNA. Protein expression of beta-arrestin-1 at intervals during the circadian cycle of aqueous secretion showed a decrease in beta-arrestin expression when maximal activation of the beta-adrenergic receptor is

Various specific early rehabilitation strategies are proposed to decrease functional disabilities in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). These strategies are thought to favour the mechanisms of brain plasticity that take place after brain injury. However, the level of evidence is low. Markers of brain plasticity would favour validation of these rehabilitation programs. In this paper, we consider the study of mu rhythm for this goal by describing the characteristics of mu rhythm in adults and children with typical development, then review the current literature on mu rhythm in CP. Mu rhythm is c
