Maize is among the crops containing carotenoids that are easily converted to vitamin A and have an enormous influence on consumers' health. Principally maize has high calories and proteins but has less number of other micronutrients such as vitamin A. Societies that use maize as their main and sole staple food are likely to be affected by vitamin A deficiency. Thus, development and production of maize varieties rich in micronutrients and vitamin A are important for improved health. This study characterized 5 carotenoid components in maize genotypes grown in Tanzania as a strategy for improving

OBJECTIVES: The exact pathogenesis of liver injury and fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is unclear. Free radicals play a role in CHC liver damage. Antioxidants (AO) (enzymatic and nonenzymatic) scavenge free radicals and prevent tissue injury. The aims of our study were to estimate serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), serum and liver levels of nonenzymatic fat-soluble AO, and to correlate the liver AO levels with the degree of inflammation and fibrosis on biopsy.
METHODS: AO levels were estimated by high-pressure liquid chromatography in the pretreatment serum and liver biopsy specimen

An experimental design procedure was used to investigate the effects of some operating parameters on the supercritical fluid extraction of carotenoids beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin from Spirulina Pacifica algae, a carotenoid-rich dietary product. Variables tested were temperature and pressure of the supercritical fluid, dynamic extraction time and percentage of ethanol added as the modifier. Each variable was tested at three levels; 31 experiments were performed in random order. Analyses of the extracts were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV-Vis pho

Certain diseases have been associated with micronutrient deficiencies in China, and nutritional assessments have become important means of preventing such diseases. In the present study, fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E, K, and beta-carotene in the cord blood and colostrum of Chinese subjects in Guilin, China, were assayed and compared with those of Japanese subjects in Osaka, Japan. These vitamins were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Vitamin A and E levels in the cord blood and colostrum of the Chinese group showed almost the same values as those of the Japa

Serum carotenoids, tocopherols and retinol were analyzed in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and in control subjects. The data show the following: the serum levels of the major carotenoids, alpha and beta carotene, cryptoxanthin, lycopene lutein, alpha tocopherol and retinol were significantly lower in SCA patients. These findings reflect an additional abnormality of the antioxidant system in SCA patients. Gamma tocopherol, on the other hand, was significantly elevated, consistent with the previously reported reciprocal relationship between serum alpha and gamma tocopherols. Thus, these

Vitamin A deficiency, a global health burden, can be alleviated through provitamin A carotenoid biofortification of major crop staples such as maize (Zea mays) and other grasses in the Poaceae. If regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis was better understood, enhancement could be controlled by limiting beta-carotene hydroxylation to compounds with lower or no nonprovitamin A activity. Natural maize genetic diversity enabled identification of hydroxylation genes associated with reduced endosperm provitamin A content. A novel approach was used to capture the genetic and biochemical diversity of a

β-Cryptoxanthin, along with β-carotene and α-carotene, is a precursor to vitamin A, which plays an important physiological role in the body. β-Cryptoxanthin is found in significant amounts in a limited number of dietary sources. The highest levels of β-cryptoxanthin are found in yellow, orange and red vegetables and fruit (persimmons, papaya, sweet peppers, tangerines, corn, peaches, oranges, etc.). The aim of this study was to perform a hygienic assessment of β-cryptoxanthin intake levels, identify its main food sources in young adults in the summer-autumn period. Material and methods. An onl

BACKGROUND: Dietary questionnaire studies have suggested that patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma are deficient in antioxidants. It is not known whether the same holds true for patients with the precursor lesion, Barrett's oesophagus.
AIMS: To evaluate the hypothesis that patients with Barrett's oesophagus are deficient in antioxidants compared with patients without evidence of Barrett's oesophagus.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Plasma antioxidant profiles (copper, selenium, zinc; vitamins A, C, and E; carotenoids) were determined for patients with Barrett's oesophagus (n = 36), patients with e

BACKGROUND: Antioxidants, such as tocopherols and carotenoids, have been implicated in the prevention of degenerative diseases. Although correlations have been made between diseases and tissue levels of antioxidants, to date there are no reports of individual carotenoid concentrations in human brain.
OBJECTIVE: To measure the major carotenoids, tocopherols, and retinol in frontal and occipital regions of human brain.
DESIGN: Ten samples of brain tissue from frontal lobe cortex and occipital cortex of five cadavers were examined. Sections were dissected into gray and white matter, extracted w

The antioxidant capacity in malnutrition--as far as it is related to vitamins--was studied by determining the plasma concentrations of the most prominent antioxidant vitamins (retinol, tocopherols, carotenoids, cryptoxanthine, lycopene, and ubiquinone-10) in marasmic (M; n = 15), severe marasmic (SM; n = 8), kwashiorkor (KW; n = 12), and normally nourished (CO; n = 18) children in Nigeria. Retinol was found to be reduced in severe marasmic children when compared to local controls (medians and interquartile ranges; SM: 155 micrograms/l, 117-178 micrograms/l; CO: 281 micrograms/l 209-413 microgr

A single laboratory validation (SLV) study was conducted for a liquid chromatography (LC) method for the determination of total and all-trans-beta-carotene in a variety of dietary supplements, including multivitamin tablets, softgels, capsules, and beadlet raw materials. Extraction variants were developed for the different types of supplements tested based upon the supplement type and level of beta-carotene. Water dispersible formulations such as powders, emulsions, tablets, and capsules were enzymatically digested with protease and extracted with dichloromethane-ethanol. Oily suspensions were

Biofortification to increase provitamin A carotenoids is an agronomic approach to alleviate vitamin A deficiency. Two studies compared biofortified foods using in vitro and in vivo methods. Study 1 screened maize genotypes (n = 44) using in vitro analysis, which demonstrated decreasing micellarization with increasing provitamin A. Thereafter, seven 50% biofortified maize feeds that hypothesized a one-to-one equivalency between β-cryptoxanthin and β-carotene were fed to Mongolian gerbils. Total liver retinol differed among the maize groups (P = 0.0043). Study 2 assessed provitamin A bioefficacy

BACKGROUND: This study examined the association between dietary intakes of total and specific carotenoids and cognitive decline among Chinese middle-aged and older adults.
METHODS: We included 4043 participants aged 55 years and older from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (1997-2006). Average daily dietary intakes of total carotenoids, α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein + zeaxanthin were calculated from 3-day 24-h dietary recalls. Cognitive function was measured repeatedly using the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-Modified. Linear mixed-effects models

Mammalian genomes encode two provitamin A-converting enzymes as follows: the β-carotene-15,15'-oxygenase (BCO1) and the β-carotene-9',10'-oxygenase (BCO2). Symmetric cleavage by BCO1 yields retinoids (β-15'-apocarotenoids, C20), whereas eccentric cleavage by BCO2 produces long-chain (>C20) apocarotenoids. Here, we used genetic and biochemical approaches to clarify the contribution of these enzymes to provitamin A metabolism. We subjected wild type, Bco1(-/-), Bco2(-/-), and Bco1(-/-)Bco2(-/-) double knock-out mice to a controlled diet providing β-carotene as the sole source for apocarotenoid p

The extraction of carotenoids from Japanese persimmon peels by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), of which the solvent was CO(2), was performed. In order to enhance the yield and selectivity of the extraction, some portion of ethanol (5 - 20 mol%) was added as an entrainer. The extraction temperature ranged from 313 to 353 K and the pressure was 30 MPa. The effect of temperature on the extraction yield of carotenoids was investigated at 10 mol% of the ethanol concentration in the extraction solvent, and a suitable temperature was found to be 333 K among the temperatures studied with respect

Dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of retinol and carotenoids were estimated in assessing the vitamin A status of young children in Kwangju, Republic of Korea. Three consecutive 24-hour food recalls and fasting blood samples were obtained from 123 healthy children (58 boys, 65 girls), aged 2-6 years. The daily vitamin A intake (mean +/- SD) was 355.9 +/- 178.1 microg retinol equivalents or 239.0 +/- 111.2 microg retinol activity equivalents. Provitamin A carotenoid intakes were 1211.2 +/- 840.0 microg/day beta-carotene, 234.6 +/- 231.7 microg/day alpha-carotene, and 149.1 +/- 160.7 micr
