Emergence of omega-3 fatty acids in biomedical research.

Shortly after the discovery that linoleic acid was an essential fatty acid in 1930, α-linolenic acid also was reported to prevent the fatty acid deficiency syndrome in animals. However, several prominent laboratories could not confirm the findings with α-linolenic acid, and as a result there was a loss of interest in omega-3 fatty acids in lipid research. Even the findings that a prostaglandin can be synthesized from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is necessary for optimum retinal function generated only limited interest in omega-3 fatty acids. The breakthrough came

Machine learning, medical diagnosis, and biomedical engineering research - commentary.

A large number of papers are appearing in the biomedical engineering literature that describe the use of machine learning techniques to develop classifiers for detection or diagnosis of disease. However, the usefulness of this approach in developing clinically validated diagnostic techniques so far has been limited and the methods are prone to overfitting and other problems which may not be immediately apparent to the investigators. This commentary is intended to help sensitize investigators as well as readers and reviewers of papers to some potential pitfalls in the development of classifiers

Informed consent among nursing students participating in biomedical research.

For consent in biomedical research, it is essential that research participants understand the need for research, the study protocol, the risk and benefits of participation, the freedom to participate or decline and the right to leave the study at any time. A structured questionnaire was used to assess understanding and knowledge among nursing trainees participating in a cohort study investigating exposure and latent tuberculosis at a tertiary care hospital. Data were collected for 138 participants. While 97% were aware of their enrollment into a research protocol, only 78% could state that it

Financial conflicts of interest in biomedical human subject research.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the past, present and future of financial conflict of interest regulation in biomedical human subject testing. Part I will briefly review the forces giving rise to the current controversy. Part II will examine the more influential ethical codes on human subject testing and argue that they are inconclusive on the subject of financial conflicts of interest. Part III will examine the various regulations now in place and identify their serious flaws. Part IV will critique the leading proposals for reform. The Conclusion will synthesize the best features of t

Pregnancy outcome of personnel in Swedish biomedical research laboratories.

Possible hazardous effects of laboratory work on the reproduction outcomes of female laboratory personnel in Sweden from 1990 to 1994 were investigated in a questionnaire-based study (n = 1052) by comparison with personnel in non-laboratory departments. The individual woman constituted the primary sampling unit, with her pregnancies defined as the unit of analysis. Allowance for dependence between different pregnancies of the same woman was considered by applying random effect models. With regard to spontaneous abortions, no elevated odds ratio was found for laboratory work in general, but an

Gaps in biomedical research in frontotemporal dementia: A call for diversity and disparities focused research.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the leading causes of young-onset dementia before age 65, typically manifesting as abnormal behavior (in behavioral variant FTD) or language impairment (in primary progressive aphasia). Although FTD affects all populations across the globe, knowledge regarding the pathophysiology and genetics derives primarily from studies conducted in North America and Western Europe. Globally, biomedical research for FTD is hindered by variable access to diagnosis, discussed in this group's earlier article, and by reduced access to expertise, funding, and infrastructur

Models of the human heart for biomedical research: Opportunities and challenges.

Model systems that mimic human cardiac structure and function are essential for the development of novel diagnostics and effective treatments for cardiovascular diseases. While non-human vertebrate models, from zebrafish to pig, remain vital to cardiovascular research, the translatability of findings to human patients is often limited. Therefore, animal experiments should be supplemented with human model systems, including human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cells, 3D engineered constructs, and last but not least, native tissue preparations and isolated primary cardiomyocytes. However,

Various aspects of sex and gender bias in biomedical research.

The main role of research in medicine is to provide relevant knowledge which, after successful translation to clinical practice, improves the quality of healthcare. The sex bias which is still present in the majority of research disciplines prefers male subjects despite legislation changes in the US grant agencies and European research programme Horizon 2020. Male subjects (cells, animals) still dominate in preclinical research and it has detrimental consequences for women's health and the quality of science. Opposite bias exists for data obtained mainly in animal models utilizing female subje

Fluorocarbons and fluorinated amphiphiles in drug delivery and biomedical research.

The specific properties of fluorocarbons, exceptional chemical and biological inertness, high gas-dissolving capacity, low surface tension, excellent spreading characteristics and high fluidity, have triggered numerous applications of these compounds in oxygen delivery. An injectable emulsion of fluorocarbon-in-water destined to deliver oxygen to tissues at risk of hypoxia has now completed Phase III clinical trials in Europe. A neat fluorocarbon is currently investigated in Phase II for treatment of acute respiratory failure by liquid ventilation. Fluorinated lipids and fluorinated surfactant

Mössbauer Spectroscopy as a Valuable Analysis Technique in Biomedical Research.

Mössbauer spectroscopy is an effective technique used to examine the iron atom electronic environments in both biomolecular molecules and whole animal studies. Because of its sensitivity to nuclear hyperfine interactions, this technique yields incredibly accurate data regarding the electronic and magnetic states of nuclei, chemical bonds, and the local electronic environment structure around iron atoms. This review demonstrates how Mössbauer spectroscopy contributes to biomedical sciences. The use of Mössbauer spectroscopy in the fields of general biology is discussed, as well as studies that

A Review on Microengineering of Epithelial Barriers for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research.

Epithelial tissue forms a barrier around the human body and visceral organs, providing protection, permeation, sensation, and secretion. It is vital for our sustenance as it protects the tissue from harm and injury by restricting the entry of foreign bodies inside. Furthermore, it is a strong barrier to drugs, nutrients, and other essential deliverables. This layer also houses a large consortium of microbes, which thrive in tandem with human tissue, providing several health benefits. Moreover, the complex interplay of the microbiome with the barrier tissue is poorly understood. Therefore, repl

Ethical considerations for involving adolescents in biomedical HIV prevention research.

BACKGROUND: Involvement of adolescent girls in biomedical HIV research is essential to better understand efficacy and safety of new prevention interventions in this key population at high risk of HIV infection. However, there are many ethical issues to consider prior to engaging them in pivotal biomedical research. In Uganda, 16-17-year-old adolescents can access sexual and reproductive health services including for HIV or other sexually transmitted infections, contraception, and antenatal care without parental consent. In contrast, participation in HIV prevention research involving investigat
