Thermal Performance Enhancement of a Biomimetic Fish-Fin Latent Heat Storage Unit Using CNTs-COOH/Erythritol Composite Phase Change Material.

Phase change energy storage is a key technology for mitigating the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy and plays an important role in improving the efficiency, stability, and reliability of energy systems. To enhance the thermal conductivity of erythritol (Ery), this study introduces carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) as a high-thermal-conductivity filler into the Ery matrix to prepare a composite phase change material (CPCM). Inspired by biomimetic principles, a biomimetic fish-fin latent heat storage structure was designed. A series of characterizations were conducted on

Novel Biomimetic Collagen-Based Corneal Repair Material Achieved via a "Killing Two Birds with One Stone" Strategy Using Carboxymethyl-β-Cyclodextrin.

Collagen, as the principal structural component of the cornea, has emerged as a promising biomaterial for artificial corneal owing to its excellent biocompatibility and degradability. However, the mechanical properties of current collagen membrane cannot match the requirements of artificial corneal materials. Inspired by the hierarchical lamellar organization of native corneal stromal collagen, a biomimetic collagen-based corneal repair material was designed via a "killing two birds with one stone" strategy. In this strategy, carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) was incorporated into the col

Bioinspired Sensory Transduction for Magnetic Profile Recognition and Encryption.

In biological systems, adaptive responses to environmental stimuli are facilitated by sensory transduction, where receptors transform stimuli into dynamic intermediate electrical signals for further processing. For bioinspired artificial systems, this suggests the need to develop concepts that transduce various stimuli into electrical intermediates for recognition. Inspired by biological magnetoreception in elasmobranchs, which sense magnetic environmental profiles for navigation, we introduce an artificial sensory transduction system for magnetic profile recognition of objects using electroma

Dual-Channel Co-Regulated Organic Phototransistors for Ultrasensitive Near-Infrared Biomimetic Eyes.

Advanced machine vision applications require imaging devices capable of accurately detecting more spectral information about the target object than existing devices can capture. High-performance near-infrared (NIR) biomimetic eyes are fundamental to enabling this advanced application. However, the general limitations of NIR organic photodetectors, including high noise, weak sensitivities, and poor mechanical flexibility, have directly hindered their translation to high-performance biomimetic eyes. Herein, an ultrasensitive hemispherical NIR phototransistor array is proposed based on a dual-cha

Biomimetic Single-Domain Magnetic Nanochains Surpassing Magnetotactic Bacteria in Hyperthermia Efficiency.

Magnetosome chains biosynthesized by magnetotactic bacteria combine high magnetic responsivity with efficient magnetothermal conversion but face limitations due to fragile assembly and potential biosafety risks. Here, we report a biomimetic Stöber-based encapsulation strategy that preserves the native chain architecture while imparting structural robustness and enhanced safety. The resulting B-MNC exhibit a coercivity (33.6 mT), approximately 5× higher than magnetosomes, 1.4× higher than intact magnetotactic bacteria, and 2.2× higher than chemically synthesized analogs (C-MNC22). Spatial patterning of biomimetic signals in corneal regeneration.

The key characteristics of the cornea, its transparency and avascularity, emerge from spatial organization of cell populations, extracellular matrix layers, biomechanical properties, and morphogenic cues. This review translates these organizing principles into contextual considerations for advancements in corneal regeneration therapies. We begin by outlining the development of the cornea, followed by how layer-specific microenvironments underpin homeostasis, and provide an outlook on current and future therapies. While full-thickness corneal transplantation remains the gold standard for global

Rapid Fabrication of Biomimetic Perfusable Structures via Lift-Up Viscous Fingering.

Controllable yet accessible fabrication of biomimetic perfusable network structures remains a key bottleneck for translational tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Although additive manufacturing can achieve micrometer-scale resolution, its reliance on expensive equipment, limited material compatibility, multi-step post-processing, and low throughput restricts widespread adoption in conventional laboratories. Viscous fingering (VF) is a highly advantageous fabrication technique with low-shear and self-organizing characteristics. However, conventional VF is highly sensitive to fluid pa

A Biomimetic Self-Adaptive Neurovision Eye With an Integrated Gel Iris and Retinamorphic Architecture.

Biological vision systems integrate light perception with self-adaptive regulation to ensure a stable view. Mimicking this in an artificial neuromorphic system requires synergistic components for dynamic light control and in-sensing processing. Here we present a biomimetic self-adaptive neurovision system featuring an integrated gel iris and retinamorphic architecture. The hydrogel iris, structured as a double concentric ring, autonomously modulates its opacity from 2.95 to 89.85% via a photothermally driven themochromic effect, while the ionogel retina, designed as a hemispherical micropillar

Thermal assembly of a biomimetic mineral/collagen composite.

A strategy is described for exploiting temperature driven self-assembly of collagen and thermally triggered liposome mineralization to form a mineralized collagen composite from an injectable precursor fluid. Optical density and rheological experiments demonstrated the formation of a collagen gel when acid-soluble type I collagen solutions (1-7 mg/ml) were heated to 24-30 degrees C. Scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrated that mixtures of calcium- and phosphate-loaded liposomes composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (90 mol%) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (10 mol%) were stable a

Adhesion differentials control the rheology of biomimetic emulsions.

Animal morphogenesis involves complex tissue deformation processes, which require tight control over tissue rheology. Yet, it remains insufficiently understood how tissue rheology results from the interplay between cellular packing and forces, such as cortical tension or cell-cell adhesion. We follow a biomimetic approach to study this interplay, using oil droplets with tunable adhesion strength to mimic adhesive cells. We expose emulsions to cyclic shear and use a geometric method to quantify their rheology using only imaging data. We find that emulsions made of two droplet types change yield

A bioinspired hybrid robotic joint for safer physical human-robot interaction.

In many robotic applications, such as humanoids, wearable robots or supernumerary limbs, there is a growing shift from rigid, traditional mechanisms toward softer, more compliant systems. This trend is driven by the need for safer physical human-robot interaction and the ability to operate in unstructured environments. In this work, we present a hybrid approach to controlling a single-degree-of-freedom robotic joint that combines a rigid frame with soft pneumatic actuators to enable both precise and versatile interaction. The joint is bioinspired, as it is powered by a couple of actuators moun

Regulation of Biomineralization via Protein Assembling Scaffolds.

Biomineralization is a biological process through which organisms produce mineralized structures to improve their adaptation to environmental challenges. In nature, biomineralization primarily contributes to the formation of hard tissues such as teeth and bone. This process is remarkably complex and involves the self-assembly of proteins into scaffolds that play critical regulatory roles. For instance, collagen molecules self-assemble into fibrils, and their unique quarter-staggered arrangement provides both a spatial template and a defined chemical microenvironment for the nucleation and grow
