Capillary versus arterial blood gases. Accuracy, acceptability, and suitability for use during sleep studies to calibrate transcutaneous carbon dioxide measurement.

PURPOSE: To determine whether capillary blood gas carbon dioxide values can substitute for arterial sampling to calibrate transcutaneous carbon dioxide during polysomnography. METHODS: Participants underwent capillary (arterialized earlobe) and blood gas (radial artery) sampling at polysomnography commencement (Evening) and end (Morning). Participant and scientist sample preference, and participant pain were recorded. The transcutaneous offset from the corresponding arterial/capillary sample, and the transcutaneous electrode drift over the night were determined. RESULTS: Seventy-five people

Transcutaneous Monitoring of Carbon Dioxide to Optimize Ventilator Weaning in At-Risk Adults After Cardiopulmonary Bypass.

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary bypass use during surgery disrupts microcirculation, which can contribute to lung injury, particularly in patients with pulmonary comorbidities. Continuous transcutaneous carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring assists clinicians to trend values related to metabolic and respiratory status between intermittent arterial blood gas measurements. We sought to review the literature to support adoption of this technology to optimize weaning in patients with pulmonary comorbidities following open heart surgery. METHODS: Multiple databases were reviewed. Inclusion criteria were lim

An analysis of skin perfusion over the achilles tendon in varying degrees of plantarflexion.

Delayed wound healing and, less commonly, wound breakdown are significant complications following open Achilles tendon repair. Skin perfusion over the Achilles tendon may be reduced when the ankle is plantarflexed. The aim of this study was to analyse skin perfusion over the Achilles tendon with the ankle in varying degrees of plantarflexion in 20 volunteers. Skin perfusion was determined by measuring the transcutaneous skin oxygen pressure (tcPO2) using the Novametrix TcO2M 860 monitor. Measurements were taken at the medial edge of the Achilles tendon in 20 volunteers. Skin perfusion was maxi

[Tissue oxygenation during recovery from anesthesia. Value and measurement].

The measurement of tissue oxygen concentrations in the intensive care unit is important for the management of patients, especially those in shock. In daily practice, right heart catheterization with continuous monitoring of the oxygen saturation of mixed venous blood provided means of evaluating the principal parameters of oxygenation (transport, consumption and extraction), and of analyzing therapeutic interventions. The finding of an oxygen debt implies an appropriate therapeutic response designed to balance oxygen supplies with peripheral oxygen demand.

Sleep apnoea and organic solvent exposure.

Fifteen patients referred for the evaluation of possible organic solvent encephalopathy were studied by clinical polysomnography. Seven had more than 30 apnoeas per night and an apnoea index of higher than 5, thus fulfilling the commonly used criteria of the sleep apnoea syndrome. Another group of eight workers exposed to trichlorethane, examined without prior knowledge of their individual symptoms, showed a significantly elevated number of sleep apnoeas compared with nine controls. The results indicate that organic solvent exposure can cause sleep apnoea.

Clinical feasibility of diffuse speckle contrast analysis for real-time tissue perfusion monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Adequate tissue perfusion is an important prognostic and diagnostic factor during the management of lower limb peripheral arterial disease. Convenient and real-time tissue perfusion monitoring remains an elusive challenge. METHODS: Tissue perfusion on the dorsal and plantar surfaces of both feet of 20 participants was measured during and after cuff-induced ischemia using a novel 4-channel, laser-based perfusion monitoring device based on diffuse speckle contrast analysis technology (Pedra sensors). Participants were free of significant peripheral arterial disease. Transcutaneous p

A Metal-Organic Framework-Based Colorimetric Sensor Array for Transcutaneous CO2 Monitoring via Lensless Imaging.

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (TcPCO2) monitoring provides a non-invasive alternative to measuring arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2), making it valuable for various applications, such as sleep diagnostics and neonatal care. However, traditional transcutaneous monitors are bulky, expensive, and pose risks such as skin burns. To address these limitations, we have introduced a compact, cost-effective CMOS imager-based sensor for TcPCO2 detection by utilizing colorimetric reactions with metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nano-hybrid materials. The sensor, with a colorimetric sensing array fabricate

Hyperventilation reduces transcutaneous oxygen tension and skin blood flow.

Transcutaneous oxygen tension (PtcO2) is often used to monitor neonates and infants in special care units and the operating room. The transcutaneous index (TCI = PtcO2/arterial oxygen tension [PaO2]) is known to depend both on age and on cardiac index but is assumed to be independent of other physiologic variables. In this study we have shown that TCI also depends upon arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2). Five young pigs were anesthetized and paralyzed and their lungs mechanically ventilated while they were monitored with PtcO2 electrodes and serial arterial blood gas analyses. For a 45 de

Fluorescence angiography compared to toe blood pressure in the evaluation of severe limb ischemia.

Background: Severity of limb ischemia in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients is usually evaluated by clinical assessment and toe blood pressure (TBP) or transcutaneous oxygen pressures (TcPO 2). Indocyanin green angiography (IGA) is a promising tool generating a foot cartography of skin microvascular perfusion. However, there is no consensus about the fluorescence parameters that should be used to evaluate ischemia. The purpose of this cross-sectional evaluation and 3-month clinical follow-up was to determine the best fluorescence parameter for the evaluation of severe PAD, using TBP as

Continuous fetal intrapartum monitoring in supraventricular tachycardia by atraumatic measurement of transcutaneous carbon dioxide tension.

A case of premature beats and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia without resulting congestive heart failure was diagnosed in a fetus of 38 weeks of gestation by echocardiography. Transplacental antiarrhythmic therapy was initiated, but a complete cardioversion was not achieved. Due to these arrhythmias adequate fetal heart rate monitoring during labor was not possible. By using continuous transcutaneous measurement of fetal carbon dioxide tension the fetus was delivered spontaneously, having been adequately monitored in spite of the effect on the fetal heart rate of the arrhythmias.

Monitoring oxygenation.

Cyanosis was used for a century after dentists began pulling teeth under 100% N(2)O in 1844 because brief (2 min) severe hypoxia is harmless. Deaths came with curare and potent anesthetic respiratory arrest. Leland Clark's invention of a polarographic blood oxygen tension electrode (1954) was introduced for transcutaneous PO2 monitoring to adjust PEEP and CPAP PO2 to prevent premature infant blindness from excess O2 (1972). Oximetry for warning military aviators was tried after WW II but not used for routine monitoring until Takuo Aoyagi (1973) discovered an equation to measure SaO2 by the rat

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring in infants and children.

OBJECTIVE: To review the technology required for and the applications of transcutaneous carbon dioxide (TC-CO2) monitoring in infants and children. DATA SOURCE: A computerized, bibliographic search regarding the applications of transcutaneous carbon dioxide (TC-CO2) monitoring in infants and children. RESULTS: Although the direct measurement of P(a)CO2 remains the gold standard, it provides only a single measurement of what is often a rapidly changing and evolving clinical picture. Given these concerns, there remains a clinical need for a means to continuously monitor P(a)CO2 without the nee

Transcutaneous Carbon Dioxide Monitoring in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory failure is the leading cause of death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Conventional pulmonary function tests are effort-dependent and may fail to detect early nocturnal hypoventilation. Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (PtcCO2) measurement is a non-invasive method for assessing ventilation, but its role in ALS remains unclear. We performed a scoping review to map the current evidence. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to April 2026. Original studies evaluating PtcCO2 monitoring in ALS were included. Due to hete

[Pulse oximetry and capnography].

Noninvasive methods of monitoring are crucial in the management of intensive care patients, especially in the pediatric field. Pulse oxymetry measures arterial oxygen saturation in severely ill patients, allows oxygen requirements to be adjusted to the patient, reduces invasive gasometric studies and achieves continuous monitoring of the critically ill child. Motion and deficient tissular perfusion reduce the accuracy of the measured values, but more sophisticated pulse oximeters are more effective in preventing these artifacts. Capnometers are an excellent method of measuring end-tidal CO2 va

Effect of Transcutaneous Electrode Temperature on Accuracy and Precision of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen Measurements in the Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: High electrode temperature during transcutaneous monitoring is associated with skin burns in extremely premature infants. We evaluated the accuracy and precision of CO2 and O2 measurements using lower transcutaneous electrode temperatures below 42°C. METHODS: We enrolled 20 neonates. Two transcutaneous monitors were placed simultaneously on each neonate, with one electrode maintained at 42°C and the other randomized to temperatures of 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42°C. Arterial blood was collected twice at each temperature. RESULTS: At the time of arterial blood sampling, values for trans

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring for the prevention of neonatal morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement is a fundamental evaluation in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as both low and high values of CO2 might have detrimental effects on neonatal morbidity and mortality. Though measurement of CO2 in the arterial blood gas is the most accurate way to assess the amount of CO2, it requires blood sampling and it does not provide a continuous monitoring of CO2. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the use of continuous transcutaneous CO2 (tcCO2) monitoring in newborn infants reduces mortality and improves short and long term respiratory and neurodevelopment
