Prevalence and clinical aspects of human bocavirus infection in children.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was recently described as a new member of the Parvoviridae. In order to investigate the suggested association of HBoV with respiratory and gastric disease in infants and young children, sera of 357 paediatric patients hospitalized with infectious and non-infectious diseases were retrospectively analyzed for the presence of HBoV DNA and virus-specific antibodies using quantitative PCR and ELISA, respectively. HBoV seroprevalence was determined to range from 25% in infants younger than 1 year of age to 93% in children aged more than 3 years. Viral loads between 1 x 10(2) a

Human bocavirus infection in Belgian children with respiratory tract disease.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) has been detected primarily in children with acute lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD), but its occurrence, clinical profile, and role as a causative agent of RTD are not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and the potential clinical relevance of HBoV. Using molecular tests, we tested 1352 nasopharyngeal samples obtained between October 1, 2017 and April 30, 2018 from children up to the age of 16 with RTD for the presence of HBoV DNA and 20 other respiratory pathogens at three different hospitals in Belgium. HBoV was detected in 77 children

Human Bocavirus Capsid Messenger RNA Detection in Children With Pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: The role of human bocavirus (HBoV) in respiratory illness is uncertain. HBoV genomic DNA is frequently detected in both ill and healthy children. We hypothesized that spliced viral capsid messenger RNA (mRNA) produced during active replication might be a better marker for acute infection. METHODS: As part of the Etiology of Pneumonia in the Community (EPIC) study, children aged <18 years who were hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and children asymptomatic at the time of elective outpatient surgery (controls) were enrolled. Nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal specimens

Human bocavirus and metapneumovirus in acute wheezing in children-Is there a link with atopy?

INTRODUCTION: Viral respiratory tract infections are the leading cause of acute wheezing in children with a significant risk of hospital admission, risk of recurrence and subsequent asthma. Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human rhinovirus (RV) in childhood wheezing are widely studied; however, accessible PCR assays enabled diagnosis of other pathogens, including bocavirus (hBOV) and metapneumovirus (hMPV). OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of respiratory viruses in children hospitalized for acute wheezing along with demographic and clinical data. MET

Genetic characterisation of a porcine bocavirus detected in domestic pigs in Uganda.

Porcine bocaviruses (PoBoVs) are small linear ssDNA viruses belonging to the genus bocavirus in the family Parvoviridae. The genome encodes four proteins-the non-structural protein 1 (NS1), the NP1 protein (unknown function) and the two structural proteins VP1 and VP2. In recent years, a number of different highly divergent PoBoV species have been discovered. PoBoVs have been shown to be present in pig populations in Europe, Asia and in the United States of America. In this study, we present the first data of the presence of PoBoV in Africa, specifically in Uganda. A PCR targeting a PoBoV spec

Detection of human bocavirus in children hospitalized because of acute gastroenteritis.

The idea that human bocavirus (hBoV) infection possibly plays a role in gastroenteritis has been suggested because of the frequent manifestation of gastrointestinal symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hBoV in children with gastroenteritis. We studied the etiologic agents in 962 children hospitalized with gastroenteritis. Viral etiologic agents were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. A viral agent was found in 44.4% of the study population: rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, and astrovirus were de

Unmasking bocavirus: is it a co-infectious agent or an actual respiratory pathogen?

OBJECTIVES: Although human bocavirus (HBoV) is primarily linked to respiratory tract infections, its exact role as a respiratory pathogen remains unclear. This study aims to investigate HBoV detection rates, as well as clinical, laboratory, microbiological, and radiological characteristics, length of stay in the emergency department (ED), rate of hospitalization, and severity of illness in cases where HBoV is detected in respiratory secretions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients under 18 years who visited a large-volume tertiary pediatric ED from Januar

[Detection of bocavirus in 4-week-old puppies with acute diarrhea].

Two 4-month-old female Doberman puppies were presented with clinical signs of acute diarrhea and emesis. They also showed sneezing and nasal discharge. The clinical presentation and neutropenia were suggestive of a parvovirus infection. The puppies were hospitalized for several days and treated symptomatically. Fecal samples tested negative for parasites. Virological examination of feces using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immune electron microscopy failed to confirm a parvovirus infection. With a recently developed PCR, bocavirus could be identified, thus making an infection with this v

Hypertrophic adenoid is a major infection site of human bocavirus 1.

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is associated with respiratory infections worldwide, mainly in children. Similar to other parvoviruses, it is believed that HBoV1 can persist for long periods of time in humans, probably through maintaining concatemers of the virus single-stranded DNA genome in the nuclei of infected cells. Recently, HBoV-1 was detected in high rates in adenoid and palatine tonsils samples from patients with chronic adenotonsillar diseases, but nothing is known about the virus replication levels in those tissues. A 3-year prospective hospital-based study was conducted to detect and qu

Human bocavirus infection in children with acute gastroenteritis in Japan and Thailand.

A total of 329 fecal specimens, which had been known to be negative for rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus, sapovirus, and astrovirus, and which were collected from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in Japan and Thailand during 2005-2008 were screened for human bocavirus (HBoV). HBoV was detected by PCR with a primer pair that amplified the NP1 region of its genome and was genotyped by sequencing of the VP1/VP2 region. Of the 329 samples tested, 6 (1.8%) were positive for HBoV. Of these, five samples were collected from Japan and one sample was from Thailand, and the detection rate

Human Bocavirus in Brazil: Molecular Epidemiology, Viral Load and Co-Infections.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is an emerging virus and has been detected worldwide, especially in pediatric patients with respiratory and gastrointestinal infection. In this study, we describe HBoV prevalence, genotypes circulation and DNA shedding, in stool samples from children up to two years of age in Brazil. During 2016 and 2017, 886 acute gastroenteritis (AGE) stool samples from ten Brazilian states were analyzed by TaqMan®-based qPCR, to detect and quantify HBoV. Positive samples were genotyped by sequencing the VP1/2 overlap region, followed by phylogenetic analysis and co-infections were acc

Rapid molecular evolution of human bocavirus revealed by Bayesian coalescent inference.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a linear single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Parvoviridae family that has recently been isolated from the upper respiratory tract of children with acute respiratory infection. All of the strains observed so far segregate into two genotypes (1 and 2) with a low level of polymorphism. Given the recent description of the infection and the lack of epidemiological and molecular data, we estimated the virus's rates of molecular evolution and population dynamics. A dataset of forty-nine dated VP2 sequences, including also eight new isolates obtained from pharyngeal sw
