Pre-to-post diagnosis weight trajectories in colorectal cancer patients with non-metastatic disease.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that > 50% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy gain weight after diagnosis. This may affect long-term health. Therefore, prevention of weight gain has been incorporated in oncological guidelines for CRC with a focus on patients that undergo adjuvant chemotherapy treatment. It is, however, unknown how changes in weight after diagnosis relate to weight before diagnosis and whether weight changes from pre-to-post diagnosis are restricted to chemotherapy treatment. We therefore examined pre-to-post diagnosis weight trajectorie

Chronodisruption as an Emerging Determinant of Weight Loss Trajectories after Metabolic Bariatric Surgery: A Scoping Review.

Chronodisruption, i.e. the misalignment between endogenous circadian rhythms and behavioral or environmental cues, is an underrecognized determinant of weight outcomes following metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). This scoping review synthesizes evidence from 18 primary human studies examining associations of chronodisruption with post-bariatric weight outcomes across six domains: sleep quality and timing, chronotype, social jetlag, chrononutrition, shift work, and seasonality. There is preliminary evidence that late bedtime, poor sleep quality, evening chronotype, high social jetlag, late meal

Maternal weight latent trajectories and associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes using a smoothing mixture model.

Class membership is a critical issue in health data sciences. Different types of statistical models have been widely applied to identify participants within a population with heterogeneous longitudinal trajectories. This study aims to identify latent longitudinal trajectories of maternal weight associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes using smoothing mixture model (SMM). Data were collected from the Khuzestan Vitamin D Deficiency Screening Program in Pregnancy. We applied the data of 877 pregnant women living in Shooshtar city, whose weights during the nine months of pregnancy were available

Life Course Trajectories of Body Mass Index and Risk of Cancer in Adulthood: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify common life-course body mass index (BMI) trajectories (childhood/adulthood to adulthood) and their impact on risk of cancer overall and cancer at different sites in adulthood. METHODS: Observational studies were identified that assessed the association of BMI trajectories with cancer risks from databases published in English. The pooled effect sizes were estimated using a random-effects model. FINDINGS: A total of 24 eligible studies were included in the meta-analysis. Transitioning from normal weight to obesity was signif

Examining weight suppression as a transdiagnostic factor influencing illness trajectory in bulimic eating disorders.

Recent research indicates that weight suppression (WS: defined as the difference between highest lifetime and current weight) prospectively predicts illness trajectory across eating disorders characterized by binge eating, including AN binge-purge subtype (ANbp), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED), collectively referred to as bulimic eating disorders. Through a series of studies, we have developed a model to explain the link between WS and illness trajectory in bulimic eating disorders. Our model posits that WS contributes to reduced circulating leptin, which leads to reduce

Weight change across adulthood in relation to ultrasound-defined metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity is a well-established risk factor for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the impact of long-term weight trajectories on MASLD risk remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association between weight change trajectories across adulthood and the risk of ultrasound-defined MASLD. METHODS: We analysed data from 4999 participants from the Healthy Happy Aging Community Cohort. Weight trajectories were assessed using body mass index (BMI) at age 25 years, ten years before baseline, one year before baseline, and at baseline. MASLD was define

Weight Trajectories During Inpatient Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa: A Dynamic Time Warp Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Restoring weight is a primary goal during anorexia nervosa (AN) treatment. Previous studies linked different weight gain profiles to treatment outcomes, but there is currently no consensus on profile shapes and numbers. We argue that heterogeneity stems from temporal distortions ("warping") in weight gain, and that similar weight improvements can stretch over different time periods. We thus favor a novel non-parametric solution that accounts for warping to identify weight trajectories. METHOD: Time series clustering with dynamic time warping (DTW) was used to identify weight chang

Lower hypothalamus subunit volumes link with impaired long-term body weight gain after preterm birth.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk for impaired body weight gain. While it is known that in prematurity several somatic and environmental factors (e.g., endocrine factors, nutrition) modulate short- and long-term body weight gain, the contribution of potentially impaired body weight control in the brain remains elusive. We hypothesized that the structure of hypothalamic nuclei involved in body weight control is altered after preterm birth, with these alterations being associated with aberrant body weight development into adulthood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We asses

Effect of interpregnancy weight change on perinatal outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity is a well-known risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes, evidence is sparse about the effects of interpregnancy weight change on the risk of adverse perinatal complications in a subsequent pregnancy. The current study aims to assess the effect of interpregnancy weight change on the risk of developing gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy induced hypertension, preterm birth, or delivering a large- or small-for-gestational age neonate. METHODS: Pubmed, Ovid Embase, ClinicalTrial.gov and the Cochrane library were systematically searched up until July 24th

Maternal weight trajectories and associations with infant growth in South African women.

BACKGROUND: Despite the close relationship between pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain (GWG) and postpartum weight (PPW), these factors are often studied separately. There are no data characterising longitudinal weight trajectories among pregnant and postpartum women in urban African populations. We examined maternal weight trajectories from pregnancy through to 12 months postpartum, factors associated with higher weight trajectory class membership and associations of weight trajectories with infant growth at 12 months. METHODS: Data from 989 women were examined for w

Routine Cholesterol Tests and Subsequent Change in BMI Among Overweight and Obese Children.

INTRODUCTION: In 2011, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that both familial and obesity-associated dyslipidemias increase cardiovascular risk and recommended universal cholesterol testing at ages 9 to 11. It remains unknown whether testing influences body mass index (BMI) trajectory, a key modifiable cardiovascular outcome. METHODS: This quasi-experimental-matched cohort includes children aged 9 to 11 years completing well visits in a diverse primary care network from 2012 to 2014. Participants had baseline BMI ≥85th% and no prior choles

Maternal weight, blood lipids, and the offspring weight trajectories during infancy and early childhood in twin pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine environment has a profound and long-lasting influence on the health of the offspring. However, its impact on the postnatal catch-up growth of twin children remains unclarified. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the maternal factors in pregnancy associated with twin offspring growth. METHODS: This study included 3142 live twin children born to 1571 mothers from the Beijing Birth Cohort Study conducted from 2016 to 2021 in Beijing, China. Original and corrected weight-for-age standard deviation scores of the twin offspring from birth to 36 months of age were ca

Weight History in Clinical Practice: The State of the Science and Future Directions.

Eliciting a weight history can provide clinically important information to aid in treatment decision-making. This view is consistent with the life course perspective of obesity and the aim of patient-centered care, one of six domains of health care quality. However, thus far, the value and practicality of including a weight history in the clinical assessment and treatment of patients with obesity have not been systematically explored. For these reasons, the Clinical Committee of The Obesity Society established a task force to review and assess the available evidence to address five key questio

Weight Regain Trajectories After Discontinuation of Semaglutide or Tirzepatide: A Reconstructed Aggregate-Data Bayesian Longitudinal Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Semaglutide and tirzepatide produce substantial weight loss during treatment, but the trajectory of weight regain after discontinuation remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To estimate post-discontinuation weight-regain trajectories and explore predictors of faster regain. METHODS: We used published timepoint-level aggregate data from studies evaluating weight change after discontinuation of semaglutide or tirzepatide to perform a Bayesian hierarchical longitudinal re-analysis. The model estimated weight loss at cessation, monthly regain rate, time to 50% regain, and time to return to b

Respiratory and Gut Microbiota in Commercial Turkey Flocks with Disparate Weight Gain Trajectories Display Differential Compositional Dynamics.

Communities of gut bacteria (microbiota) are known to play roles in resistance to pathogen infection and optimal weight gain in turkey flocks. However, knowledge of turkey respiratory microbiota and its link to gut microbiota is lacking. This study presents a 16S rRNA gene-based census of the turkey respiratory microbiota (nasal cavity and trachea) alongside gut microbiota (cecum and ileum) in two identical commercial Hybrid Converter turkey flocks raised in parallel under typical field commercial conditions. The flocks were housed in adjacent barns during the brood stage and in geographically
