Functional near-infrared spectroscopy for intraoperative brain mapping.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a relatively new seizure-free technique and its value for intraoperative brain mapping is unknown. We examine the feasibility of fNIRS for intraoperative functional brain mapping. A 1 × 1    cm 2 density fNIRS probe specially designed for intraoperative use was used to map brain function in adult patients undergoing awake brain surgery and performing motor and/or language tasks. The ability of fNIRS for functional mapping was compared with direct cortical stimulation (DCS) and regression was used to determine if mean blood pressure (MBP) and

[Brain biopotential mapping in emotional and cognitive pathology].

The EEG rhythms spectral power and intracortical connections were studied in depressive and schizophrenic patients in four schematically outlined main cortical quadrants. In depressive patients two cortical quadrants--right anterior and left posterior ones appeared to be predominantly involved in negative emotions regulation. Alpha-rhythm spectral power and cortical connections in these areas were decreased, pointing to their relative hyperactivation and functional disturbances. Schizophrenics patients were divided into two groups--with the predominance of "positive" and "negative" symptoms. I

Technical and clinical aspects of topographic brain mapping.

TBM provides physiological and diagnostic information which is quite complementary to EEG, but does not replace the need for standard EEG recordings. For example, it does not show subtle morphologic abnormalities such as FIRDA, PLEDs or epileptiform discharges. Simultaneous EEG recording as well as impeccable technique are essential in proper recording of TBM, particularly as it can generate new forms of artifact. By prolonging the averaging time to over 180 seconds, and by application of flexible montages, a more accurate and cleaner record with less artifact can be obtained. Certain phenomen

Cognitive maps for hierarchical spaces in the human brain.

Many of the environments that we navigate through every day are hierarchically organized-they consist of spaces nested within other spaces. How do our mind/brains represent such environments? To address this question, we familiarized participants with a virtual environment consisting of a building within a courtyard, with objects distributed throughout the courtyard and building interior. We then scanned them with functional MRI (fMRI) while they performed a memory task that required them to think about spatial relationships within and across the subspaces. Behavioral responses were less accur

Mapping Angiopoietin1 Expression in the Developing and Adult Brain.

Angiopoietin1 (Angpt1) is a secreted protein that activates the endothelial Tie2 receptor. Angpt1 plays a critical role in cardiac development and vascular remodeling in response to disease or injury and shows cell type-restricted expression in the lung, eye, and hematopoietic system. However, the expression of Angpt1 in the developing and adult brain is not known. Here, we employ Angpt1-GFP knock-in reporter mice and a systematic analysis of multiple single-cell RNA sequencing datasets to map the expression of Angpt1 during brain development and adulthood. In the developing brain, Angpt1 disp

The pathological and the normal: Mapping the brain in medieval medicine.

Medieval medicine from the late eleventh century onward generally accepted the tripartite model of the brain. This study shifts our attention from the theoretical discussions of the mind and brain as ideal abstractions to more practical discussions of the perceived dysfunctions associated with a variety of brain diseases. When dealing with practical nosological concerns, medical writers began to recognize the deficiencies and overly reductive aspects of the model. Disease categories such as melancholia or stupor raised issues about how and where to locate these conditions in the brain by quest

Mapping the self in the brain's default mode network.

The brain's default mode network (DMN) has become closely associated with self-referential mental activity, particularly in the resting-state. While the DMN is important for such processes, it has functions other than self-reference, and self-referential processes are supported by regions outside of the DMN. In our study of 88 participants, we examined self-referential and resting-state processes to clarify the extent to which DMN activity was common and distinct between the conditions. Within areas commonly activated by self-reference and rest we sought to identify those that showed additiona

A comprehensive transcriptional map of primate brain development.

The transcriptional underpinnings of brain development remain poorly understood, particularly in humans and closely related non-human primates. We describe a high-resolution transcriptional atlas of rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) brain development that combines dense temporal sampling of prenatal and postnatal periods with fine anatomical division of cortical and subcortical regions associated with human neuropsychiatric disease. Gene expression changes more rapidly before birth, both in progenitor cells and maturing neurons. Cortical layers and areas acquire adult-like molecular profiles surp

Mapping the psychopathic brain: Divergent neuroimaging findings converge onto a common brain network.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by a constellation of interpersonal, affective, lifestyle, and antisocial features. Its neural underpinnings remain poorly understood due to the discrepancies in result of functional neuroimaging studies. Here, we tackled this lack of replication by investigating whether heterogeneous peak locations associated with psychopathy could in fact map onto a common functional connectivity network. A coordinate-based meta-analysis of 38 functional neuroimaging studies (40 independent samples) on psychopathy revealed only weak spatial convergence acro

Population-based body-brain mapping links brain morphology with anthropometrics and body composition.

Understanding complex body-brain processes and the interplay between adipose tissue and brain health is important for understanding comorbidity between psychiatric and cardiometabolic disorders. We investigated associations between brain structure and anthropometric and body composition measures using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; n = 24,728) and body MRI (n = 4973) of generally healthy participants in the UK Biobank. We derived regional and global measures of brain morphometry using FreeSurfer and tested their association with (i) anthropometric measures, and (ii) adipose and muscle

Comprehensive mapping of the thalamic commissures in the rodent brain.

Brain commissures are antiparallel white matter fiber bundles that connect both hemispheres across the midsagittal plane at different anatomical levels. In the mammalian brain, the best-known commissures are the corpus callosum, the anterior and the posterior commissures. Recent studies have identified a new white matter pathway, the thalamic commissures (TCs), that connect the cortex to the contralateral thalamus in rodents and primates. However, the specific cortical regions that project via the TCs and their target thalamic nuclei are still unknown. To thoroughly and accurately map this pro

Morphometric analysis and neuroanatomical mapping of the zebrafish brain.

Large-scale genomic studies have recently identified genetic variants causative for major neurodevelopmental disorders, such as intellectual disability and autism. However, determining how underlying developmental processes are affected by these mutations remains a significant challenge in the field. Zebrafish is an established model system in developmental neurogenetics that may be useful in uncovering the mechanisms of these mutations. Here we describe the use of voxel-intensity, deformation field, and volume-based morphometric techniques for the systematic and unbiased analysis of gene knoc

Global order and local disorder in brain maps.

Maps serve as a ubiquitous organizing principle in the mammalian brain. In several sensory systems, such as audition, vision, and somatosensation, topographic maps are evident throughout multiple levels of brain pathways. Topographic maps, like retinotopy and tonotopy, persist from the receptor surface up to the cortex. Other maps, such as those of orientation preference in the visual cortex, are first created in the cortex itself. Despite the prevalence of topographic maps, it is still not clear what function they subserve. Although maps are topographically smooth at the macroscale, they are

Quantitative susceptibility mapping of brain iron in adult ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that frequently persists into adulthood and is linked to alterations in fronto-striatal circuitry and dopaminergic signaling. Brain iron is essential for dopamine synthesis and neural metabolism and can be indexed in vivo using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), which reflects regional magnetic susceptibility. Pediatric studies have mostly reported reduced tissue iron susceptibility in ADHD, but data in adults are limited. This study investigated regional susceptibility in adults with ADHD, it

Towards precision functional brain network mapping in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative condition that leads to widespread disruption of large-scale brain networks and is further complicated by substantial individual variability in symptomology, progression rates, and treatment response. Consequently, the investigation of individual differences in networks measured via resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) may provide insight. However, most RSFC studies are unable to identify interindividual differences due to poor reliability and group average network definitions. "Precision" RSFC addresses these shortcom

Mapping the Neuroanatomy of Dystonia Using Causal Brain Lesions.

Dystonia is one of the most prevalent movement disorders, but its neural substrates have remained enigmatic despite decades of research. Brain lesions leading to dystonia offer unique causal inference that could lend insight into the neural networks driving the disorder. Here, we studied the published cases of lesions causing dystonia to a variety of different body parts (n=179) and used lesion network mapping to test whether lesion locations mapped to a common brain network. Specificity was investigated by comparing the findings to 216 lesions causing other movement disorders, and 499 lesions

Regional brain iron mapping in obstructive sleep apnea adults.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects show significant white matter injury, including myelin changes in several brain areas, potentially from impaired glial cells, contributing to increased iron levels that escalate neurodegeneration, but brain iron loads are unclear. Our aim was to examine regional brain iron load, using T2∗-relaxometry, in OSA adults before and after continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment over controls. METHODS: We performed T2∗-weighted imaging using a 3.0-T MRI scanner on 35 OSA adults, who were followed after 3- and 9- mo CPAP treatment, and 67 co

Complex Brain-Heart Mapping in Mental and Physical Stress.

OBJECTIVE: The central and autonomic nervous systems are deemed complex dynamic systems, wherein each system as a whole shows features that the individual system sub-components do not. They also continuously interact to maintain body homeostasis and appropriate react to endogenous and exogenous stimuli. Such interactions are comprehensively referred to functional brain-heart interplay (BHI). Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether this interaction also exhibits complex characteristics, that is, whether the dynamics of the entire nervous system inherently demonstrate complex behavior, or if
