The built environment and adverse cardiovascular events in US veterans with cardiovascular disease.

QUESTION: Can AI-extracted interpretable built environment features predict major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in a national veteran population? FINDINGS: In this cohort study of 770,990 U.S. veterans, seven built environment features were significantly associated with an increased risk of MACE. Two features, old/dilapidated buildings and visible wire, were associated with a decreased risk. Greenery was only linked to increased risk in higher social deprivation index quartiles. MEANING: Built environment features can serve as predictors of MACE, highlighting the potential role of nei

Analysis of risk factors for DUI and DWI crashes considering the built environment.

The risk level of alcohol-involved traffic crashes is closely related to alcohol consumption. However, research on different influencing factors for DUI (Driving Under Influence) and DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) remains limited. This study analyzed data from 3,365 alcohol-related traffic crashes in Tianjin, China. The crashes were categorized into DUI and DWI based on drivers' Blood Alcohol Concentration. Four machine learning models were enhanced and compared. The accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score were used to evaluate the performance of the models. Shapley additive explanations wer

The influence of marine environment on the conservation state of Built Heritage: An overview study.

Marine aerosol is a chemical complex system formed by inorganic salts and organic matter, together with airborne particulate matter from the surrounding environment. The primary particles transported in the marine aerosol can experiment different chemical reactions in the atmosphere, promoting the so-called Secondary Marine Aerosol particles. These kinds of particles (nitrates, sulfates, chlorides etc.), together with the natural crustal or mineral particles and the metallic airborne particulate matter emitted by anthropogenic sources (road traffic, industry, etc.) form clusters which then can

The built environment and active transportation safety in children and youth: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Active transportation, such as walking and biking, is a healthy way for children to explore their environment and develop independence. However, children can be injured while walking and biking. Many cities make changes to the built environment (e.g., traffic calming features, separated bike lanes) to keep people safe. There is some research on how effective these changes are in preventing adult pedestrians and bicyclists from getting hurt, but very little research has been done to show how safe various environments are for children and youth. Our research program will study how fe

Exploring the relationship between the built environment of prisons and the mental health of inmates.

PURPOSE: Around the world, prison complexes have always been fundamentally taxing environments. The strained atmosphere within these prisons often contributes to the deterioration of mental health, mostly those who may already be psychologically vulnerable. This paper aims to understand whether there exists a relationship between the built environment of prisons, particularly the central prisons of India and its effects on the mental health of inmates. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: By means of literature reviews, the study parameters were found to be connectivity to nature, lighting, acoustics

The role of the built environment and assistive devices for outdoor mobility in later life.

OBJECTIVE: Despite theoretical advances in our conceptualization of disability, the "environment" remains a largely unspecified term in disablement models. The purpose of this research is to draw upon on a unique state-of-the-art nationally representative data set with innovative measures that provide the opportunity to tease apart and specify the role of different environmental factors in the disablement process. METHOD: Using multinomial logistic regression with data from the first round of the recently launched National Health and Aging Trends Study (N = 6,578 community-dwelling Americans

Built Environment and Loneliness Trajectories Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China.

Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a critical public health concern, yet evidence on the associations between long-term residential conditions and loneliness trajectories remains limited, particularly in developing countries. Using nationally representative longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this study identified loneliness trajectories among middle-aged and older adults and examined the associations between housing and neighborhood characteristics and trajectory membership. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) was applied to identify latent traj

The Built Environment, PTSD Symptoms, and Tobacco Use among Permanent Supportive Housing Residents.

INTRODUCTION: 50% of permanent supportive housing (PSH) residents in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, and tobacco-related mortality is their number one cause of death. Over 30% of PSH residents have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many perceive their built environment (e.g., housing) as inadequate for mental and physical health recovery. It is unknown whether built environment factors moderate the relationship between PTSD and tobacco use among PSH residents. METHODS: We used baseline data from 400 participants in a smoke-free home intervention in PSH sites in the San Francisco Bay Area

Exploring associations between built environment and crash risk of children in school commuting.

Understanding how built environment are associated with crash risk (CR) in school commuting is essential to improving travel safety through land use and transportation policies. Scholars often assume that this relationship is consistent across space, but this may lead to inconsistent estimates. To address this issue, using data in Shenzhen, China, the data covers traffic accident data of children taken from police incident reports and supplemented with local land use, transportation network and specific school information. The measurement model of crash scale was conducted to represent crash s

Spatially varying associations between the built environment and older adults' propensity to walk.

Population aging has become a severe issue facing most nations and areas worldwide-with Hong Kong being no exception. For older adults, walking is among the most well-liked travel modes, boosting their overall health and wellbeing. Some studies have confirmed that the built environment has a significant (spatially fixed) influence on older adults' walking behavior. However, little consideration has been given to the potential spatial heterogeneity in such influences. Hence, this study extracted data on older adults' (outdoor) walking behavior from the 2011 Hong Kong Travel Characteristics Surv

Nonlinear effects of built environment on road traffic safety: A multi-scale perspective.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address the research gaps regarding the nonlinear effects and two-way interaction effects of multi-scale built environment features on road traffic safety. METHODS: Using data from online ride-hailing accidents in three Chinese megacities, this research applied a gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT) model to analyze the nonlinear relationships between multi-scale built environment features and road traffic safety. The built environment was characterized by three scales: road attributes, Points of Interest (POIs), and street view images (SVIs). The analysis foc

How does high-density built-environment affect the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus.

As one of the prevalent complications during pregnancy, this study discussed the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and multi-source built-environment from the perspective of different spatial scales in mega-cities. This study centered on 4,355 women at a Shanghai hospital. Thirteen variables were selected, then multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) was used to clarity how these variables relate to GDM. The results showed that: MGWR effectively revealed the relationship between the built environment and GDM at different scales. At specific spatial scales, b
