Background and aims The objective was to conduct the first investigation to identify the frequency and intensity of pain experiences for individuals with CHARGE syndrome and to review the use of two established non-vocal pain assessments with children with CHARGE, the NCCPC-R (Non-Communicating Children's Pain Checklist-Revised) and the PPP (Pediatrics Pain Profile). Methods Parents of children with CHARGE were enrolled. Participants completed a pain questionnaire and the NCCPC-R and PPP twice, once for a baseline measure and second during a painful experience for their child. Results A modera

CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by coloboma, heart anomaly, choanal atresia, retardation of growth and development, and genital and ear anomalies. While several neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormalities such as hypoplasia of the semicircular canal, olfactory nerve, cerebellum, and brainstem, no quantitative analysis of brain morphology in CS has been reported. We quantitatively investigated brain morphology in CS participants using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (N = 10, mean age 14.7 years old) and high-angular resolution diffusion MRI (HAR

CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a multiple congenital anomalies condition with the majority of cases caused by dominant loss-of-function mutations of the CHD7 gene. It is clinically characterized by coloboma of the eyes, heart defects, choanal atresia, retardation of growth and/or development, genital and/or urinary anomalies and ear malformations associated with deafness and vestibular disorder(s). This case series reported nine molecularly confirmed Chinese CS patients from nine unrelated families in Hong Kong. Clinical phenotype and facial features of these nine Chinese CS patients together with fo

INTRODUCTION: CHARGE syndrome is a multisystem disorder that, in addition to Kallmann syndrome/isolated hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, has been associated with anterior pituitary hypoplasia (APH). However, structural abnormalities such as an ectopic posterior pituitary (EPP) have not yet been described in such patients.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were: 1) to describe the association between CHARGE syndrome and a structurally abnormal pituitary gland; and 2) to investigate whether CHD7 variants, which are identified in 65% of CHARGE patients, are common in septo-optic dysplasia /hypopit

The "R" in the mnemonic "CHARGE" has historically stood for "Retardation of Growth and Development." Early medical reports describing mental retardation in CHARGE syndrome have not used convincing means to assess this attribute. This article investigated the range of developmental ability in individuals with CHARGE as measured through an adaptive behavior scale, the Adaptive Behavior Evaluation Scale (ABES) [Carney (1995): The Adaptive Behavior Evaluation Scale home version technical manual-revised. 126p.], over time. Parents of individuals with CHARGE syndrome were surveyed twice over a 4-yea

Very little information has been published about adolescents and older individuals with Coloboma, Heart defects, Atresia choanae, Retarded growth and development, Genital hypoplasia, Ear anomalies and deafness (CHARGE) syndrome. This paper describes the results of a study that identifies the unique issues faced by adolescents and adults with CHARGE. Descriptive information was gathered from parents of patients with CHARGE, and/or the patients themselves, about their developmental, medical, educational, and social history. The resulting body of information provides important insights into the p

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 7 (CHD7)gene. CS is characterized by a spectrum of disorders, including coloboma, heart malformations, atresia choanae, retarded growth and development, genital hypoplasia, and ear abnormalities and/or deafness. Additionally, some patients with CS may have some type of endocrine disorder, which affects their development.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 6-month-old female infant diagnosed with CS and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) who presented with various

CHARGE syndrome is a malformation disorder with diverse phenotypes that shows autosomal dominance with heterozygous variants in the chromodomain helicase DNA-binding 7 (CHD7) gene. Only a few cases of CHARGE syndrome accompanied by neoplasm during childhood have been reported. We report the case of a girl with CHARGE syndrome who developed acute myelogenous leukemia at 12 years old. She had mild intellectual disability, and hearing loss with inner ear malformation, myopia, astigmatism, laryngotracheal malacia, hypogonadism, and clival hypoplasia, with a history of patent ductus arteriosus. OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal surgical approach for cochlear implantation (CI) preoperatively based on the spatial relation of a displaced facial nerve (FN) and middle ear structures and to analyze clinical outcomes of CHARGE syndrome.
METHODS: Facial nerve displacement and associated deviation of inner ear structures were analyzed in 13 patients (17 ears) with CHARGE syndrome who underwent CI. Surgical accessibility through the facial recess was assessed based on anatomical landmarks. Postoperative speech performance and associated clinical characteristics were analyzed.
RESULTS: The

Unilateral absence of a parotid gland at the expected location is an extremely rare condition with only a few cases reported in the medical literature and, to our knowledge, never previously described in association with CHARGE syndrome (Coloboma of the eye, Heart defects, Atresia of the choanae, Retardation of growth and/or development, Genital and/or urinary abnormalities, and Ear abnormalities and deafness). Although this entity is usually associated with a complex constellation of anomalies, additional findings have been described, including cranial nerve dysfunction (VII, VIII, IX and X).

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a smell test could predict the occurrence of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) in patients with CHARGE syndrome, which is a variable combination of ocular coloboma, heart defects, choanal atresia, retardation of growth/development, genital hypoplasia, and ear anomalies or hearing loss caused by mutations in the CHD7 (chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 7) gene.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed endocrine studies and smell testing (University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test) in 35 adolescent patients with molecularly confirmed CHARGE syndrome.

UNLABELLED: CHARGE syndrome is a rare congenital condition that manifests with anomalies of coloboma, heart defects, choanal atresia, mental retardation, genitourinary and ear anomalies that can affect almost any part of the auditory pathway. In those patients with a significant sensorineural hearing loss, cochlear implantation has become a potential therapeutic option.
METHODS: Chart review of three cases from the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme.
OUTCOMES: All patients met clinical diagnostic criteria of CHARGE syndrome, and had abnormal inner ear anatomy with profound sensorineural hea

CHARGE syndrome was initially not thought to involve the limb. Several subsequent reports have shown that limb anomalies are not uncommon. To date, there have been no quantitative studies of limb anomalies in CHARGE syndrome. This study was designed to answer several questions: Do CHARGE patients with limb anomalies represent a subgroup within CHARGE syndrome? Are there correlations between certain CHARGE syndrome anomalies and limb anomalies? Are there differences between the two genders and associated limb anomalies? Are certain types of limb anomalies seen with increased frequency in CHARGE

The clinical features associated with terminal 6p deletion syndrome include anterior eye chamber defects, hearing loss, congenital heart anomalies and characteristic facies along with developmental delays. These features overlap with a number of other conditions including CHARGE syndrome. This acronym stands for non-random association of anomalies including coloboma of the eye, heart anomalies, choanal atresia, retardation of growth and development, genital hypoplasia and ear anomalies/deafness now known to be caused by CHD7 mutations. We describe a boy initially diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome
