Mint Flavorings from Candies Inhibit the Infectivity of Chlamydia pneumoniae.

The impact of solvent extracts from the distillation water (flavoring extracts) isolated from mint flavored candies on the infectivity of the intracellular bacterium Chlamydia pneumoniae was evaluated by an in vitro model of epithelial cell infections., The mint flavoring extracts were isolated from the candies by simultaneous hydrodistillation and their chemical composition, established by GC-MS, demonstrated menthol and limonene as the most abundant components. Results obtained by treating C. pneumoniae elementary bodies (EBs) with the flavoring extracts or pure reference compounds showed a

Surgical management of candy cane syndrome after Roux-en-Y bypass.

BACKGROUND: Candy cane (CC) syndrome is a complication that occurs following Roux-en-Y bypass (RYGB), implicated as a long, small-bowel blind limb at gastrojejunostomy possibly caused using circular staplers. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to report our experience with CC resection and improving outcomes following RYGB. SETTING: University hospital. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent CC resection at our institution from 2017 to 2023. Patient's charts were then reviewed to evaluate for symptoms, operative, and weight data. Only patients with an afferent blind limb

Successful treatment of "candy cane" syndrome through endoscopic gastrojejunal anastomosis revision.

Candy cane syndrome is an underappreciated complication reported in bariatric patients following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. It results from an excessively long blind afferent Roux limb at the gastrojejunostomy that can lead to food accumulation. Patients often present with nausea, vomiting, food intolerance, acid reflux, and abdominal pain. Many patients remain undiagnosed due to vague gastrointestinal symptoms, delayed presentation, and physician unawareness. Here, we present the case of a 40-year-old female who presented for a third opinion on the cause of intractable acid reflux and nausea.

Association of candy weight loss rate with whole saliva flow rates.

OBJECTIVE: The association of candy weight loss rate (CWLR) with whole saliva flow rates (WSFRs) was analyzed. STUDY DESIGN: The unstimulated whole saliva flow rate (UWSFR), stimulated whole saliva flow rate by the gum test (SWSFR-GT) and stimulated whole saliva flow rate by the Saxon test (SWSFR-ST) were measured in 300 healthy young adults. CWLR was measured by passively holding sugar candy between the tongue dorsum and hard palate. The degree of discomfort was evaluated by the visual analog scale. RESULTS: CWLR was significantly correlated with UWSFR, SWSFR-GT, and SWSFR-ST with Pearson's

Endoscopic management of candy cane syndrome with a lumen-apposing metal stent.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Candy cane (CC) or "hockey stick" syndrome is an adverse event of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) caused by an excessively long blind afferent limb distal to the gastrojejunostomy. This anatomical anomaly leads to symptoms such as pain, regurgitation, vomiting, and weight loss. Although surgical resection is the standard treatment, it is technically challenging and associated with significant risks. Alternative endoscopic approaches have been described in limited case reports. METHODS: We present a novel EUS-guided approach to managing CC syndrome. A 61-year-old man with

Analysis of Candy Tobacco Imitation Products Available Online in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Youth tobacco use remains a critical public health concern, and childhood use of candy tobacco imitation products (CTIP) is associated with cigarette use among youth. However, no research has examined the full extent of CTIP available for purchase in the United States. AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted a content analysis of CTIP available on English-language, US-based websites. We identified sites that marketed CTIP utilizing Google and candy retail websites, examining each product for product names, the tobacco product being replicated (eg, cigar and cigarette), manufacturer, cand

An unconventional valvuloplasty: severe pulmonary stenosis with 'candy cane' inferior vena cava.

Femoral vein is the usual approach to balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (BPV). However, alternative access may be mandated in some peculiar situations. We hereby report a 10-year-old patient with symptomatic severe valvular pulmonary stenosis with interrupted inferior vena cava which was successfully treated with transjugular BPV. Technical considerations for this approach as well as other possible options for such patients are discussed.

Retrograde device-assisted lumen-apposing metal stent insertion for candy cane syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Candy cane syndrome is a rare adverse event of gastric bypass or gastrectomy, where a blind jejunal pouch fills with food, causing dilation and compression of the efferent limb, leading to obstructive symptoms like vomiting and regurgitation. Surgical resection is curative but technically challenging, and endoscopic treatment using lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) insertion has been attempted. METHODS: This case describes a retrograde LAMS insertion in a patient with previous total gastrectomy who presented a decade later with dysphagia and food regurgitation. Imaging re

A modified candy-plug technique to occlude false lumen in aortic dissection.

PURPOSE: Aim of this technical note article is to introduce a modified, novel way to custom create a candy-plug (CP) device to endovascularly occlude false lumen. The technique is illustrated by a patient case with significant backflow to false lumen (FL). The patient had already undergone surgical repair of the ascending aorta, aortic arch and subsequent TEVAR procedure down to the ostium of the celiac trunk because of type A aortic dissection, but the descending thoracic aorta continued to dilate due to backflow to the FL from an uncovered tear at the level of the renal arteries. Evaluation of physicochemical, antioxidant, antibacterial activity, and sensory properties of watermelon rind candy.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is consumed all over the world that contains a large number of seeds and rind, which is discarded. These by-products contain phytochemical compounds with great nutritional potential. This study aims to evaluate physicochemical properties and sensory values of watermelon rind candy. In this study in order to make the waste of watermelon a more sustainable and value-added food product, the watermelon rind was dried using an osmotic dehydration technique which comprises gradual impregnation of syrup (50 and 70% w/w - 1 to 5 h) before drying at 40 and 60 °C in 8 and

Lead poisoning associated with imported candy and powdered food coloring--California and Michigan.

Although the most common source of pediatric lead poisoning is dust within the home that contains deteriorated lead-based paint from walls and windowsills, other less common sources (1-3) can result in excess exposure among children (i.e., blood lead levels [BLLs] > or =10 microg/dL). This report describes two cases of pediatric lead poisoning associated with eating imported candy and food stuffs and underscores the importance of thorough history-taking to identify unusual sources of lead exposure.

Cross-Modal Denoising and Integration of Spatial Multi-Omics Data with CANDIES.

Spatial multi-omics data offer a powerful framework for integrating diverse molecular profiles while maintaining the spatial organization of cells. However, inherent variations in data quality and noise levels across different modalities pose significant challenges to accurate integration and analyses. In this paper, we introduce CANDIES, which leverages a conditional diffusion model and contrastive learning to effectively denoise and integrate spatial multi-omics data. With our innovative model and algorithm designs, CANDIES not only enhances the quality of spatial multi-omics data, but also
