Building Capacity for Health Communication in the GCC: Educator and Practitioner Perspectives.

Health communication is increasingly recognized as central to public health practice, yet limited evidence shows how competencies are defined and developed in regions where the field is emerging. This mixed methods study examined how educators and practitioners in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) conceptualize essential knowledge, skills, and abilities for effective health communication and assess current education and training capacity. Survey data from 59 participants and follow-up interviews showed high importance ratings across all competency domains, particularly multicultural and crisi

Capacity building for the clinical investigation of AIDS malignancy in East Africa.

PURPOSE: To build capacity in the resource-poor setting to support the clinical investigation and treatment of AIDS-related malignancies in a region of the world hardest hit by the AIDS pandemic. METHODS: An initial MEDLINE database search for international collaborative partnerships dedicated to AIDS malignancies in developing countries failed to identify any leads. This search prompted us to report progress on our collaboration in this aspect of the epidemic. Building on the formal Uganda-Case Western Reserve University (Case) Research Collaboration dating back to 1987, established NIH-supp

Building data capacity for maternal health equity: Introduction of a novel dataset.

This article describes a new, publicly available data resource linking numerous existing datasets and analyses at the county/FIPS code level. Linked datasets include publicly available data on county demographic makeup (e.g., race, population, etc.), social vulnerability factors, and pregnancy-related hospital utilization. It also includes a new dataset, measuring travel time from each county to the nearest hospital for each of four levels of maternal care services. A wide variety of datasets, including population-level health data, are published by the United States Government for public use.

Building capacity for patient-engagement in neuromuscular disease research: A network project.

Patient-oriented research is increasingly recognized as an important methodology in health sciences. Benefits of patient engagement include aligning research priorities to those living with health conditions, developing better recruitment strategies and protocols, and integrating findings more meaningfully. However, for research teams to work well with patient-partners, training for all stakeholders is needed. While training exists, none consider the uniqueness of the neuromuscular disease experience. To address this gap, our team of researchers, clinicians, and patient-partners collaborated t

A Novel Approach to Build Virtual Communities of Practice for Health Care Capacity Building in Military Health Systems Globally.

INTRODUCTION: The HIV/AIDS epidemic poses significant risks to military personnel, impacting operational readiness. For over 2 decades, the U.S. DoD HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP) has partnered with international militaries to develop prevention and treatment programs. Military health systems, often in remote areas, face challenges in accessing and implementing updated guidelines, leading to suboptimal care. To address this, DHAPP adopted Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) to establish virtual communities of practice (VCoPs), enhancing health care capacity. DoD HIV

Beyond regulatory recognition: Capacity building outcomes in traditional medicine South-South cooperation.

Capacity building dimensions of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) internationalization remain theoretically underdeveloped. This conceptual analysis introduces capacity building theory from development studies into TCM cooperation research, comparing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia under a most-similar-systems design across five capacity dimensions: institutional, talent, technological, industrial, and discourse. Both countries regulate traditional medicine, but their frameworks differ in kind rather than in scale. UAE licensing is administered at emirate level and accords TCM

Building Family Capacity: supporting multiple family members to implement aided Language modeling.

Family-centered capacity-building practices have been shown to benefit children and families. However, limited research explores these practices for children who use augmentative and alternative communication. This study explored an intervention to teach family members to implement an Aided Language Modeling (ALM) strategy across natural activities at home. A single case multiple probe design was used to evaluate the intervention with five family members and a girl with autism. Results showed the intervention increased family members' percentage of high-fidelity ALM strategy use and rate of AL

Building systemic capacity for nutrition: training towards a professionalised workforce for Africa.

The fundamental role played by good nutrition in enabling personal, social and economic development is now widely recognised as presenting a fundamental global challenge that has to be addressed if major national and international problems are to be resolved in the coming decades. The recent focus provided by the Millennium Development Goals and the Scaling-Up-Nutrition (SUN) movement has been towards reducing the extent of nutrition-related malnutrition in high-burden countries. This has served to emphasise that there is a problem of inadequate professional capacity in nutrition that is suffi

Building collaborative capacity: promoting interdisciplinary teamwork in the absence of formal teams.

BACKGROUND: Contradictory findings about the effectiveness of health care teams may relate to the actual structure of teams-loose rather than formal-and the nature of decision making-hierarchical rather than egalitarian. We introduce the concept of collaborative capacity-the likelihood that providers, no matter how brief their exchange, will collaborate as if they were members of an egalitarian team even in the absence of a formal team structure. OBJECTIVE: To examine aspects and determinants of collaborative capacity, namely task interdependence, norms of working together, and egalitarian co

Role of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Tertiary Centers of Excellence in Capacity-building.

Tertiary Centres of Excellence in India have been at the forefront of the efforts against Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) - associated blindness. The epidemic of blindness from ROP; however, has now spread rapidly into large parts of interiors of developing countries due to improved newborn care facilities. Due to their knowledge and experience of more than a decade, these centres of excellence, both from child care and Ophthalmology care, now need to come forward in substantial measures and need to be supported by funds and programs so that concerns of neonatal eye-health, training, screenin
