What is the carbon footprint of a 100% digital pathology scenario in France?

Healthcare systems contribute to 5-10% of annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and must reduce them to meet the 2016 Paris Agreement targets. Workflows in many areas of medicine are digitised, including surgical pathology (SP). This is the case in France, the second most populous country in the European Union (68 million inhabitants/0.8% of world population) with an energy supply that is primarily sourced from nuclear power. We aimed to evaluate the carbon footprint (CF) in a theoretical scenario where all French SP laboratories implement full digitisation. Data on annual SP activities were o

Estimation of carbon footprint in nuclear medicine: illustration of a french department.

PURPOSE: In order to limit climate changes, we need to reduce the carbon footprint of human activities, including those due to health systems. We performed an estimation of the carbon footprint of our nuclear medicine department using a methodology developed with the help of a specialized consulting firm. METHODS: The estimate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions comprises direct and indirect emissions. Direct emissions are due to fuels consumption (by the hospital and by hospital's vehicles), refrigerant leaks and impact of buildings on biomass (land use change). Indirect emissions include upst

The intraoperative carbon footprint of burn surgery: A prospective case-level analysis.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare contributes to approximately 4-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Burn surgery is particularly resource intensive; however, its environmental impact has not been quantified at the case level. We aimed to evaluate the carbon footprint of burn surgery and identify its key drivers. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at a UK regional burns centre by including adult and paediatric burn procedures. Carbon emissions were calculated in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO₂e) using published life-cycle assessment data and NHS emission factors.

Greening orthopaedic surgery: Carbon footprint, waste generation, environmental impact, and mitigation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic surgery is among the most resource-intensive areas of healthcare, generating substantial waste, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. Operating rooms contribute disproportionately to a hospital's environmental footprint due to their high energy loads, extensive use of consumables, and complex supply chains. Despite rising global attention to sustainable healthcare, evidence specific to orthopaedic practice remains fragmented. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review synthesises current evidence on the environmental impact of orthopaedic surgery, identifies major contribut

Suppression of carbon footprint through the CO2-assisted pyrolysis of livestock waste.

Concentrated animal feeding operation facility in modern livestock industry is pointed out as a point site causing environmental pollution due to massive generation of manure. While livestock manure is conventionally treated through biological processes, composting and anaerobic digestion, these practices pose difficulties in achieving efficient carbon utilization. To address this, this study suggests a pyrolytic valorization of livestock manure, with a focus on enhancing syngas production. Hen manure was particularly chosen due to its abundance of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) compared to other m

Quantifying the Carbon Footprint of External Beam Radiation Therapy-A Narrative Review.

The health care sector contributes significant amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the global climate change issue. However, little remains known about the specific contribution of radiation therapy even though there are methods/tools to quantify its carbon footprint. This narrative review aimed to identify aspects within the external beam radiation therapy pathway that are associated with a significant carbon footprint and the methods by which this footprint can be assessed. These were categorised as power consumption of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) for imag

Life cycle carbon footprint assessment of coal-to-SNG/methanol polygeneration process.

The coal-to-natural gas project alleviates the shortage of natural gas in China by using the abundant coal resources, but it has the problems of single product and poor ability to deal with risks. The coal to synthetic natural gas (SNG)/methanol polygeneration process can solve this by coproducing chemicals and have the advantages of high economic benefit and energy saving. The impact of polygeneration process design on carbon emission reduction is still the key issue to be solved urgently. Therefore, for the coal-to-SNG/methanol polygeneration process, this paper explores the interactions bet

Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Anesthesia: Low-Flow Anesthesia and Other Techniques.

According to a joint statement by the US National Academy of Sciences and the UK Royal Society, it is now more certain than ever that human activity is a leading cause of rapid, accelerated climate change. Our volatile anesthetics have up to 2,000 times more greenhouse gas contributing potential than the same amount of carbon dioxide, yet no emission regulations have been imposed. The carbon footprint of volatile agents exists in all anesthesia practices, indirectly affecting all humans. It manifests daily in the clinical practice of over 30,000 certified registered nurse anesthetists in the U

Carbon footprint of patient journeys through primary care: a mixed methods approach.

BACKGROUND: The NHS has a target of cutting its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. Travel comprises 17% of the NHS carbon footprint. This carbon footprint represents the total CO2 emissions caused directly or indirectly by the NHS. Patient journeys have previously been planned largely without regard to the environmental impact. The potential contribution of 'avoidable' journeys in primary care is significant. AIM: To investigate the carbon footprint of patients travelling to and from a general practice surgery, the issues involved, and potential solutions for red

Financial footsteps and carbon footprints: Analyzing the relationship between financial development and carbon inequality in China.

Achieving fair climate action requires addressing carbon disparity, but little is known about its causes, especially the role played by financial systems. According to this study, financial development could be a crucial tool for reducing this inequality. This study examines the effect of financial development on carbon inequality by considering CO2 emissions, foreign direct investment, gross domestic product, and trade openness as additional determinants in carbon inequality function by utilizing time-sequential data of China for the period 1980 to 2022. We employed the Bootstrap Auto Regress

Carbon Footprint of Antibody-Based Drugs and Biologics Using Hybrid Life Cycle Assessment.

Biological engineering has emerged since the 1980s as one of the most efficient technologies to develop new medicines. The monoclonal antibody platform is the most widely used, representing about 15-20% of drug sales. Only scarce and partial monoclonal antibody life cycle assessments (LCAs) are reported. We estimate the cradle-to-pharmacy gate carbon footprint of monoclonal antibodies from the pharmacopeia on the market (n = 103) using the full life cycle inventory of the medicines, encompassing antibody production, packaging production, transport, medicine manufacturing, and associated corpor
